Sergio Perez has been handed the final point for tenth at the British Grand Prix after Pierre Gasly was given a five second post-race time penalty.
Gasly had originally crossed the line in tenth place after a late overtaking move on the Force India driver into Club had seen the pair make contact.
The stewards investigated the incident and decided to award Gasly a five second time penalty for his role in the collision, dropping him to 13th place and promoting Perez into the final points paying spot.
“The Stewards felt that Gasly’s maneuvers were generally reasonable, and that he was attempting to make a good racing pass,” the stewards explained.
“Perez left his sufficient room throughout. However, Gasly touched the sausage kerb at the apex of turn 16 which caused him to collide with Perez. This subsequently forced Perez off the track on driver’s left before turn 17 and severely compromised his ability to race through turns 17 and 18, and Gasly was thus able to pass Perez.
“The Stewards determined that Gasly was wholly or predominantly to blame, and while the collision was light it led directly to the pass. Therefore the Stewards ordered a five second penalty.”
Gasly was also awarded two penalty points on his superlicense for the collision, giving him four points on his license over a 12 month period.

@rocketpanda, mind you, on the replays it did look like the only reason Gasly got past Perez was because Gasly had bumped him off the track, so it does not seem unreasonable to penalise Gasly given that he would otherwise have gained a clear benefit (points for his team) by colliding with another driver.

I don’t mind penalties for mistakes that harm other drivers, but early in the season they were letting far bigger mistakes pass as racing incidents. There is absolutely no consistency. I think the only reason Gasly got a penalty is because they gave Raikkonen one too this race for pretty much the same thing.

Yet the other French got away with taking Sainz out of the race (and points) on what I think was a similar but more obvious incident.
So back to the consistency…. I don’t think they are being consistent, no matter what Wolf says.

The 5s penalty is fair, cos he did gain from the altercation, but the additional 2 penalty points are stupid for a genuine attempt like this with zero malice, that ultimately changed nothing after the time penalty was applied.

Perez does not even deserve that point with the terrible qualifying performances he has been producing recently. Perhaps it’s time for Perez to try his luck at NASCAR. Ocon is making Perez look dated.

The article describes the decision to penalize driver 1 by hitting driver 2 and with that gaining advantage to pass for the last point on the grid.
