Albon still learning to make right set-up calls at Red Bull

In the round-up: Alexander Albon says he’s still figuring out how best to set up the RB15 following his switch to Red Bull.

What they say

Monza was Albon’s second race for the team:

There were moments during the weekend where I felt good in the car. Even before the final run in [final practice] I was feeling really good. Still understanding the car sometimes I want certain set-up directions done and actually it’s not the right one, just because I’m learning what the car needs to be quick.

But overall it’s not been too bad. I’ve been quite happy with it. Still some work to do on the long runs. But even qualifying [until] the last run pace was actually OK. Maybe not Charles [Leclerc] and Lewis [Hamilton] pace but we were definitely in the fight for scraps, [fourth, fifth, sixth] and so on.

Comment of the day

How many more races will Ferrari win this year?

Seeing as Ferrari accidentally built a dragster this season, rather than a Formula 1 car, I’m going to say none.

Then again, the long start/finish straight at Mexico may be very favourable to them; let’s just hope their parachutes are working…

  1. I’m sure the channel 4 people are delighted, travelling along the f1 circus for no reason at all. Don’t know why channel 4 would agree to it, just screen snippets of skys coverage, it is cheaper.

    1. Because C4 wants to offer an informed , quality product; rather than F1 for dummies?

    2. Yes travelling to races, meeting drivers, engineers, designers and taking advantage of paddock hospitality is SUCH a chore.

You do realise these people are fans of the sport right?

    3. Some countries have Channel 4 as the official coverage provider, like India did till last year. They don’t go for nothing.

    4. Their product is better than Sky I feel. I also am getting used to it and actually almost prefer it, the same way I prefer match of the day to watching football live. Especially when you have 2 little ones that take all your time :)

  2. We have nothing to worry about. The circuit will be ready next year on May 3. And I prefer to listen to people who know what’s going on than to people who just shout something.

Maybe those “people who just shout something” are reminded of the fiasco at Donnington Park raceway.

  3. The haze in Singapore will have an effect on visibility. It’s a bit like a fog, but at times more dense. I’ve lived through “haze season” many a time, its not very nice at all. Breathing gets uncomfortable after long periods outside and you eventually start to tear up as well. All this may affect teams and drivers weekend prep work, so it will be interesting to see how they cope with it. For example, traditional runs or bike rides round the track can probably be discounted this weekend.

The forecast shows a 50% chance of rain on Sunday. That will be a big help. Lets hope for the best.

    1. The only thing remotely close I know is how over here in some regions in winter there is the yellow-grey haze of people burning lignite (and plastic bottles etc) in their old stoves @jaymenon10. Luckily that has been gradually less and less with more gas heating, and stricter norms on what and how can be burnt.

I imagine what you describe as this, but several times more intensive.

    2. I’ve never understood that 50% chance of rain thing. To me that says, it may or may not rain 50/50. Not really going out on a limb is it?

    3. @jaymenon10 But the race takes place in the evening, so the 50% forecast, is, therefore, kind of pointless to read into.

      1. I think the point is, that if / once it rains @jerejj, a lot of the smoke that makes up the haze gets washed away by the rain and the air is clearer (for at least several hours)

  4. Re COTD, Leclerc was mighty fast in Monaco before thé qualy shambles , so its not a Lost cause yet ! In a street circuit, driver rhythm Can make thé différence.

  5. Re Lewis’ social thingy,
He used to talk about women as crumpet….
It definitely means something else in Australia when used in that context :)

    1. Yes, it was a thing in the UK during the 50s and early 60s. Good looking women-crumpet. Not PC now and I think Stirling is the only one to still use it.

  6. Nothing on Juan Manuel Correa? Looks like he is still having a really tough fight for his live.

I hope he pulls through and makes a recovery. Seeing Robert Wickens up there makes one hopefull that it can be done.

    1. @bascb Just a few days ago there was an update. On this site as well.

      1. I know @jerejj, but this one is from yesterday, and it is a bit of a setback vs. the one from end of last week.

        1. No, I read that as cautiously optimistic. They’d rather he was off the breathing assistance, but his lungs are improving. The only downside is the longer they have to wait to do surgery on his legs, the harder it will be.

  7. The new Formula 1® partnership from 2020 comes as part of a content deal which enables Sky and NOW TV customers to enjoy even more up-front box set stacks from Channel 4 so they can binge-watch all episodes of selected series before they air on Channel 4.

So we can ‘binge watch’ race highlights before they take place! Take that Sky.

  8. ”Then again, the long start/finish straight at Mexico may be very favourable to them; let’s just hope their parachutes are working…”
    – I doubt it, though, given that the Mexican GP venue requires maximum possible downforce-levels due to the altitude.

  9. Uhm…
I’ve experienced smog of this nature a few times, and in different locations. One thing it did, besides visibility, is really shorten your breath. As Singapore is physically the hardest race of the year already, surely the one thing F1 drivers don’t need is less oxygen? Not to sound too ‘health and safety’, but, well, is this safe?
