Going into the second round of the championship at Sepang, the team struggling most with the new two-race V8 engine rules appears to be Ferrari. Felipe Massa has now had his engine changed twice and Michael Schumacher will also use a new unit and take a ten-place grid penalty.
Fellow Ferrari engine user David Coulthard will also change the Ferrari engine in his Red Bull following his slowing-down lap engine failure in Bahrain. Each of the four failures has been linked to cracked pistons, and it remains to be seen how the three drivers, and Christian Klien, still running the same Ferrari V8 from Sepang, will fare in the sweltering heat of Malaysia.
During the off-season, speculation surrounded the reliability of McLaren’s Mercedes engines, which have not yet failed during a race weekend.
