Renault out-spent McLaren in ’05

Renault are often held up examples of how ‘restrained’ spending can still be effective within Formula One.

Everything is relative of course, but compared to the giga-spending of Toyota, Renault are positively frugal, and excellent value for money when you consider how many races each team has won in the last four years (Renault 18, Toyota 0).

But with the publication of the British based teams’ financial results for 2005 it seems Renault actually out-spent McLaren in their championship year.

Honda also substantially increased their spending, rising far above Williams:

Team2004 turnover ($m)2005 turnover ($m)
Renault179229
McLaren208216
Honda114185
Williams169159
