Spyker officially drop Albers

Spyker boss Michel Mol has confirmed that Christijan Albers will no longer race for the team.

The team are yet to announce a replacement driver for the Nurburgring round next week and any one of a number of racers could fill Albers’ place.

Spyker has four test drivers: Giedo van der Garde, Marcus Winkelhock, Adrian Valles and Fairuz Fauzy.

But the Dutch team were expected to give former F1 racer Jos Verstappen a test drive in the car at Spa-Francorchamps this week. Might they fall back on the experienced and popular Dutchman?

Other F1 test drivers with substantial race experience have been linked to the seat including Marc Gene, Christian Klien and Narain Karthikeyan. The latter raced for the team in 2005 when they were Jordan.

  1. It’s sad to hear that Christijan is out because a sponsor didn’t pay up – though I don’t think Spyker had any choice over the matter.

As for the replacement, it won’t be Verstappen. Spyker have already denied that they have any interest in him when the rumour circulated last time. More likely van der Garde’s money will talk.

  2. I believe they are glad in Spyker for the money issue to come up. If not for his money they would have dropped him few races earlier due to his performance. the sponsor non payment came about in the very convenient time

so, seems like I can move the catalogue for Christijan Albers skincare that he signed for me earlier this year to the “EX F1 DRIVERS” file :-)

i thought he was damn fast after what he did in minor series and in Dtm, but this year he was an embarassment. who knows… anyway Milos is right, spyker was looking forwatd to busting him since the first race.

  4. Since the sponsor in question had their space reduced between late 2006 (when it had the whole engine cover) to 2007 (when it had a small part of the top surface of the monocoque – apparently due to payment issues), I suspect Spyker were not looking for an excuse to fire Albers. Otherwise they simply wouldn’t have let him in the car for 2007. Mind you, that might have been less embarrassing for Christijan…
