This weekend’s F1 alternative: Indy Car Nashville

There’s no F1 race this weekend but there’s tons of other motor racing action going on around the world.

My pick for this week is the Indy Racing League – but there’s plenty of other races for those of you who don’t like ovals…

Indy Racing League, Nashville

It’s a hectic time for the Indy Racing League with a string of consecutive races. Dario Franchitti has asserted himself and has a strong championship lead. But was Scott Dixon’s victory at Watkins Glen last week the sign of a resurgence by early pace setters Ganassi?

The race at the Glen last weekend ended in ugly scenes and Tony Kanaan, Sam Hornish Jnr and their associates have all been fined for the pit lane brawl. Expect sparks to fly on the track at the short oval at Nashville on Saturday night.

BTCC, Donington Park

A single point separates Fabrizio Giovanardi and Jason Plato in the battle for the championship. Plato is struggling with his Seat’s lack of straight line speed – but the twists of Donington Park may neutralise that and serve up three rounds of close racing between the championship duellists.

British F3, Brands Hatch

The F3 Euroseries race at Brands Hatch a few weeks ago was turgid. Happily the British series races on the full length Grand Prix track, not the oval, so this should be much better.

Runaway championship leader Marko Asmer is looking impossible to stop. But there’s also the British GT race to watch – keep an eye out for the stunning Team Modena Lamborghini Gallardo.

DTM & F3 Euroseries, Mugello

Will the Mugello round of the German Touring Car Championship throw up a sixth different winner in as many races?

Mercedes has finally gotten a handle on its 2007 car but Audi’s Mattias Ekstrom and Martin Tomcyk are putting Bernd Schneider under pressure in the championship. This title race is still anybody’s game – don’t rule out McLaren tester Gary Paffett in the year-old car either.

James Jakes’ first win in the F3 Euroseries at Magny-Cours propelled him to this in the championship – but can he catch leaders Sebastien Buemi and Romain Grosjean?

  1. Hey we are going to the IRL race in Sparta Ky this weekend Aug 11, 2007 , I love Formula One racing but there isn’t any one for the next 2 weeks and we aren’t getting it here in the States till 2009 IF we are and i say IF we are lucky.I wish speed channel would play some of the older seasons to fill the gap but NOOOOOOOOO ah well. IRL is a very good racing league and can stand on its own even though they go in a oval LOL. P.S. The race is in Sparta Ky not Nashville Tenn. Even though Nashville is only 240k away. Here is the link to the race track. it has a wonderful seating set up any where u sit you can see the whole race. http://www.kentuckyspeedway.com/

    Cheers
