Jason Plato flattened the opposition in a second wet race at Donington Park, leading home race one winner Gordon Sheddon and Fabrizio Giovanardi.
Plato’s fifth win means he has eked out a slightly larger lead in the championship.
The top four preserved their positions at the start with Gordon Sheddon leading Adam Jones, Matt Neal and Jason Plato. Shedden drew away as Neal busied himself with Jones before passing on the entry to the chicane.
John George was the first man off, parked in the gravel at MacLeans on lap one. It was recovered under yellow flags without the presence of the safety car yet still Tom Onslow-Cole spun off.
Plato had a look at Jones on lap three while Giovanardi appeared behind him in fifth after Mike Jordan went off. But Plato put Jones between him and his title rival with a clean pass at Coppice on lap four.
Plato caught the leading Team Dynamics Hondas very quickly and as he passed Neal around the outside of Redgate the two made contact. Showing amazing car control both caught their slides and continued, but with Plato now in second. Behind them, Giovanardi caught Jones and took fourth off him at the chicane on lap seven.
In just two laps Plato decimated Sheddon’s lead, setting a new fastest lap on the way. By lap nine he was darting from side to side behind the Seat looking for a way past.
On lap 11 Plato drew out of Redgate alongside Sheddon but the Scotsman shut the door as they descended the Craner Curves. Next time around he got alongside that fraction earlier and the pass was sealed.
Giovanardi was hounding Neal for third in much the same way. On lap 12 he seized the inside line on the exit of Coppice and passed Neal on the entry to the chicane.
The Italian didn’t have time to catch Sheddon though, and Plato had checked out, winning with a substantial lead. Neal fell back into the clutches of Jones and Darren Turner and the three crossed the line together.
