Timo Glock wins GP2 title

BMW test driver Timo Glock boosted his chances of getting an F1 drive next year by sealing the GP2 title in the final round at Valencia today.

Glock, who drove four F1 races for Jordan in 2004, has been linked with a race seat at Toyota replacing Ralf Schumacher.

He beat Lucas di Grassi to the title by taking his fifth victory of the year.

After driving for Jordan Glock made a brief appearance in Champ Cars but switched to GP2 in 2006 with BCN. The team struggled but when Glock replaced Tristan Gommendy at iSport he finished second in his first race for the team and won twice by the end of the year.

He was widely tipped to be GP2 champion this year but along with taking five wins has had some poor luck. The team have suffered a string of car failures – highly unusual in a one-make championship.

Glock was eliminated from the sprint race at Spa-Francorchamps before the race even began, being hit by Ricardo Risatti on the way to the grid.

But he also created problems for himself, being involved in a woeful crash with team mate Andreas Zuber when the pair started on the front row at Magny-Cours.

His championship battle with di Grassi has been seen as a race between the tortoise and the hare, with Glock sprinting ahead but di Grassi slowly picking up points. The Brazilian only won one race all season, and it came after Glock had suffered characteristic misfortune with the appearance of the safety car.

There’s no shortage of German drivers on the grid, which may work against him, but like Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton before him there’s plenty of reason to think Glock can be competitive in F1.

  1. I saw Timo race in CART and I liked what I saw. It is a shame that someone has to lose a seat but Timo deserves another chance.
