What are your predictions for 2008? Here are mine…

Who will have the best car? Ferrari. On balance, an F2007 was the car to have last year, and at the very least I expect them to have slightly increased their advantage over McLaren.

Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? If it rains I’d put some money on Fernando Alonso, otherwise not.

How will Williams do? I think they’ll score points consistently early in the season but be overtaked by Renault and BMW as the season goes on.

Who will win the first race? Kimi Raikkonen.

Will traction control make the racing better? Perhaps a little – I think we’ll see a few more mistakes and more drivers suffering tyre degradation.

What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Lewis.

What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Honda won’t be as bad as everyone expects.

Which driver will be dropped first? Rubens Barrichello.

Who will be the most impressive rookie? Timo Glock.

What will be the biggest political issue of the year? The combined problem of the economic downturn, containing costs, small teams in jeopardy and the legality of customer cars.

Champion driver and team? Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari.

Make your predictions for the year below…

1. I predict that Kovi and Lewis will be pretty evenly matched and will swap places consistently. We will have to wait until the end of the season to find out who comes out on top.

Massa will have problems and will be the best of the rest with Rosburg taking the fourth spot.

Honda will be deep in the points by mid season.

Alonso and Piquet will strike up an instant dislike for each other and knock each other off the track on a regular basis.

Raikonnen will win the championship as the driver with the best car and a teammate that takes less points away from him than the other contenders team mates take from them.

2. I’ll think about these properly later but my instant reaction to the ‘gate’ question has to be ‘SECU-gate’ – this one’s going to run and run I fear…

3. Who will have the best car? Ferrari. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Nick Heidfeld, he deserves! How will Williams do? I think they’ll score points consistently early in the season but be overtaked by Renault and BMW as the season goes on. (YES!) Who will win the first race? Lewis. What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Ferrari´s tractionGATE What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Toyota with Timo! Which driver will be dropped first? Sebastien Bourdais (going right back to USA!). Who will be the most impressive rookie? Kazuki Nakajima! Champion driver and team? Lewis, McLaren (against Kimi and the “best car”)

4. Who will have the best car? Ferrari. McLaren will make a huge effort to catch up, but by then it might be too late to stop the Scuderia. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Yes, someone else will. But it will only no more than thrice this year. Who will do it? In any order: Alonso, Kubica, Rosberg. How will Williams do? They’ll be in the reckoning for 3rd all year, but will lose it in the end to Renault.Who will win the first race? Kimi Raikkonen. Will (the lack of) traction control make the racing better? Sure, it will. But I’m guessing there will only be overtaking if someone spins or goes off. Otherwise, expect the same processions. What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? If I may use an acronym, ‘TC’.What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Honda will have a 2nd-half comeback ala 2005.Which driver will be dropped first? Rubens Barrichello, but not until the year ends.Who will be the most impressive rookie? Nelson Piquet Jr.What will be the biggest political issue of the year? The privateers (or lack of them) due to the customer cars issue.Champion driver and team? Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari.

5. Who will have the best car? BMW. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Yes. BMW will have to, if they’re going to come through on my prediction, and Williams will too. How will Williams do? They will win the constructors’ championship (well, I have to say that, don’t I?).Who will win the first race? Heikki Kovalainen. Will (the lack of) traction control make the racing better? Marginally, mainly in dropping those who don’t cope well with it.What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Bernie. What will be the biggest surprise of the year? The gradual degeneration in performance of both Ferrari and McLaren.Which driver will be dropped first? Anthony Davidson.Who will be the most impressive rookie? Kazuki Nakajima. What will be the biggest political issue of the year? The spygate thing again. Facts will emerge that prove extremely embarrassing for the FIA.Champion driver and team? Nick Heidfeld, Williams.

6. Come on Clive, Williams? Heidfeld? Champions? Seriously?

7. Who will have the best car? Ferrari, but I think McLaren are closer then many people think.

Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Yes, I bet Rosberg, Alonso, and one of the BMW boys will win one or two between then

How will Williams do? Third place in the championship

Who will win the first race? Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari

What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it?
Spy-gate (again… the story that will never die)

What will be the biggest surprise of the year? That Super Aguri makes it through the season

Which driver will be dropped first?
David Coulthard (forced too retire due to pressure from team a’la Wurz last year) or Jarno Trulli (put in a straight jacket and sent off to the loony bin.)

Who will be the most impressive rookie? Since Nakajima is technically not a rookie, I say Nelson Piquet Jnr.

What will be the biggest political issue of the year?
The on-coming fight between Bernie and the CVC Partnership investment group. There are already hints out their that Bernie management style and performance are not to the groups expectations. This could explode if F1 continues to hemorrhage money and not develop alternative revenue streams.

Champion driver and team? Drivers: Kimi Raikkonen
Team: McLaren

8. ooops your MySQL went away, your old logo appeared and my predictions disapeared :-) trying again:

Who will have the best car? Ferrari. At least early on in the season

Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Rosberg, Alonso

How will Williams do? Very good, they will have some great races and results but with the midfield teams looking to be so close, they can finish anywhere between 3rd and 6th or even 7th.

Who will win the first race? Kimi

Will traction control make the racing better? Yes, we will see smoke when the races start :-)

What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? ECUgate I am tempted to agree

What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Kovalainen will be clearly ahead of Hamilton

Which driver will be dropped first? Rubens Barrichello was my first thought, but I say Sutil. Fisi will dominate in Force India, and getting beaten by Fisi is not cool these days …

Who will be the most impressive rookie? Nakajima, if he is not a rookie, than Glock

What will be the biggest political issue of the year? customer cars and Bernie and his track dumping crusade

Champion driver and team? Kimi, Ferrari.

9. Yes, apologies to anyone else having connection problems, I’m looking into it. Please email me if you’re experiencing any particular problems with this.

10. Yes, seriously, Haplo. Have a read of everyone else’s guesses – they all expect Ferrari and McLaren to be top again. Which is obvious from testing time, form and just about everything else. And it’s also boring in the extreme. Where is the spirit of adventure in these guys? Have they never known a season in which a totally unexpected driver and/or team won? Come on, let’s get a bit of optimism around here, take a wild (but calculated) stab at something different, live on the edge a bit!

Thing is, sooner or later I’m going to be right. Ferrari and McLaren won’t stay in front forever, one day another team will come up with something that breaks the duopoly. Nothing lasts in this world and change is here to stay. I’m just refusing to give in to the likelihood of yet another silver and red season (can you imagine how I hated the Schumacher years?) and proposing that this time we’ll see something different.

It can happen.

11. And I see the Comments system doesn’t take HTML – I was supposed to notice the word processor buttons instead. Shame on me.

But it gives me the chance for a parting shot: suppose all of you are right and Kimi gets the WDC, Ferrari or McLaren the CC – what the heck are you but one amongst the millions who thought so too? But, if I’m right and Nick gets the WDC, Williams the CC, I don’t half look good… :D

12. Williams is my fave team, but Keith asked for predictions, not wishes! ;)

13. Who will have the best car? Ferrari, without a shadow of a doubt.

Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Yeah, Nico, Alonso or Kubica are all in with a shout should Ferrari have an off day.

How will Williams do? Third overall, with a couple of podia.

Who will win the first race? Kimi, for sure.

Will traction control make the racing better? Not in the slightest.

What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? McLaren (again)

What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Force India will finish in the points on more than one occasion.

Which driver will be dropped first? Sato, hopefully. Or Davidson, again, hopefully.

Who will be the most impressive rookie? Nakajima.

What will be the biggest political issue of the year? The illegality of Super Aguri and Toro Rosso for the third consectuive year.

Champion driver and team? Kimi , Ferrari

14. Clive,
you stole all of my thunder.

I agree how boring to predict Ferrari and/or McLaren.

Who will have the best car? BMW
Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Yes, Williams will be the first followed by the BMW.

How will Williams do? 4th in the constructors points

What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Ferrari’s "no traction control"

Who will win the first race? Heidfeld

What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Bourdaiswill get a podium finish

Who will be the most impressive rookie? Bourdais

What will be the biggest political issue of the year?
I hate to say it but spygate just won’t die!!

Champion driver and team? I am going out on a limb here — Heidfeld BMW

15. I did that backwards BMW will have the first win followed by a Williams car.

also–Driver most likely to have a terribly long year–Alonso

16. What duopoly are you refering to Clive? The 2 years prior to last both chamionships were won by Renault/Alonso while McLaren’s last constructors championship was in 1998, and its last drivers champion Mika Häkkinen in 1999.
Who will have the best car? Ferrari
Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race?
Only if these two teams suffer technical/accident problems
How will Williams do? Not as well as BMW and Renault.
Who will win the first race? A Ferrari driver.
Will traction control make the racing better? Not really.
What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? It’s time to stop this foolish ‘-gate’ suffix thing.
What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Kovalainen thumping Hamilton (LH will be most surprised).
Which driver will be dropped first? During the season? Nobody.
Who will be the most impressive rookie? Sebastien Bourdais.
Champion driver and team? Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari.

17. Who will have the best car? Ferrari
Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Definitely if it rains, maybe even if it doesn’t. In the dry noone outside BMW or Alonso to do it. In the wet, could be anyone. How will Williams do? Not as well as the hype says – they’ll look great in a couple of races throughout the year but still end up fifth overall in the WCC, behind BMW and Renault and in front of Red Bull. Shame though, ‘cos I’d love them to win.Who will win the first race? Raikkonen. Will traction control make the racing better? Yes – more changing of positions off the start, more mistakes leading to more position changing during the race, more worn tyres near the end leading to quite noticeble differences in pace. I predict at least a couple of dry races will see a comfortable win lost by a leader making a spin and the wet races will to a large extent be a complete lottery. What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Whatever part Ferrari is giving Mclaren the ability to stay with them in the title chase and run to the FIA to complain about. What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Alonso revealing his Ferrari drive for 2009, and F1’s great status quo ensuring the WCC looks almost identical to 2008. Which driver will be dropped first? Nakajima dropped to third driver role as Williams crash repair bill mounts steadily. May make reappearance after a few months out just testing.Who will be the most impressive rookie? Bourdais. Piquet will score most points, but in the best car, and people will be raving instead about Bourdais. What will be the biggest political issue of the year? So many to choose from…teams complaining ever more about KERS, complaints about the "greenness" of the Singapore nightrace despite increasing pressure for races in Asia to consider running at night, continued fallout from spygate. Plenty of controversial stewards decisions late at night after the GP. All overshadowed by a combination of budget cap talk and absolutely everything Max Mosely says being complete crap. Champion driver and team? Raikkonen, Ferrari.

18. P.S I mean Piquet has the best car of all the rookies, just to make that clear!

19. The duopoly of the moment is the one I refer to, Green Flag – the red and silver one. It may have been red and blue/yellow before that but it’s the present order I want to see changed.

And Haplo, I assure you they’re predictions as well as wishes (were they wishes alone, BMW would win the CC). That’s why I mentioned a calculated stab – I look at the possibilities, discount the obvious and see what’s top of the heap afterwards. You guys are just trying to be right! ;)

20. Cheese-gate all the way and Bourdais as best rookie and biggest surprise.
Champions? Kimi and Ferrari, easy.

21. Who will have the best car? Ferrari. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? No. Sad but true How will Williams do? Better than last year, but still far from the top teams. Who will win the first race? Kimi Raikkonen. Will traction control make the racing better? I don’t think so… wait a minute, i forgot about Massa. Felipe is going to suffer. What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Briatore’s thong gate. What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Bourdais will be a big surprise, but not for me, i’m telling you now. OK, i know some of you agree. Which driver will be dropped first? Giancarlo Fisichella Who will be the most impressive rookie? Bourdais. In case you can say rookie to Sebastiaen. What will be the biggest political issue of the year? Teams using not-allowed ways to develop KERS Champion driver and team? Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari.

22. Isn’t a prediction all about trying to be right?

23. Actually, Clive, it’s not boring having Ferrari and McLaren win regularly, just as its not boring having Federer or Tiger dominate their sports. I certainly don’t want to see these benchmark teams, motor racing’s superstars if you will, whose lifeblood is and has always been building racing and sports cars, matched by manufacturers of mass-produced, mainly humdrum passenger cars – BMW, Ford, Honda, Mercedes, Renault, Toyota et al. It’s indeed satisfying to see these large corporations striving to catch the cars from Maranello and Woking and just not achieving it. Sure, it’s interesting having a Renault or BMW at the front now and again, but F1 will be much diminished were Ferrari and McLaren ever to lose their edge.

24. Who will have the best car? Ferrari. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? mmh, i don’t think so. They might be closing the gap, but Mclaren and Ferrari will be in another story. How will Williams do? Forth place, regular point finishes for both drivers, but they’ll be overtaken by BMW at the end of the season. Who will win the first race? Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari

What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it?
ECU
What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Renault not being able to develop the car. Which driver will be dropped first?
Jarno

Who will be the most impressive rookie? Nakajima (he’s not a rookie but he’s not an experienced guy neither). What will be the biggest political issue of the year?
The night races. Champion driver and team? Drivers: Kimi Raikkonen
Team: Ferrari

25. Who will have the best car? Ferrari. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Fernando Alonso How will Williams do? 4th, just ahead of Red Bull and then BMW. Who will win the first race? Kimi Raikkonen. Will traction control make the racing better? Barely noticeable in terms of laps times, more offs in the wet. Only hope for driver errors when under pressure to improve racing. What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Mosley What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Renault challenging for wins. Which driver will be dropped first? Davidson. Who will be the most impressive rookie? Nakajima. What will be the biggest political issue of the year? Probably the US election? Champion driver and team? Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari.

26. Just when I think I have it figured out,Clive has to chime in and stir my hopes up!..GO BMW!!!

rookie of the year….Nakajima,
best car….Ferrari,
?gate….same as last season,
surprise(s) of the year….Heikki @ McLaren & the boys @ Williams kickin’ some butt,
champion….Kimi, traction control….@ milos…"we will see smoke when the races start"….ha,ha..love that!

27. Who will have the best car?
I hate to say it, Ferrari.
Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race?
Put me down for a couple of Alonso wins, a Heidfeld or two and with a little luck a Webber on the top step.
How will Williams do?
Podiums, but not the top step.
Who will win the first race?
Webber , long overdue.
Will traction control make the racing better?
Yep. Bye bye Felipe !
What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it?
I don’t think Stepneygate is going to go away this year either. :(
What will be the biggest surprise of the year?
Alonso doing well at Renault.
Which driver will be dropped first?
Sorry Rubens, the tribal council has spoken.
Who will be the most impressive rookie?
I think Nelsinho. For entertainment value, anyway.
What will be the biggest political issue of the year?

Singapore – if something goes wrong at the night race.
Champion driver and team?
I think McLaren will do the honours for the CC. But WDC is prolly going to be another feast of Finland. But do I mean Kimi or Heikki there ;)

28. Haplo: Yes, it’s about being right – but there is little value in being right when the vast majority say the same thing. It’s the seemingly wild prediction that comes true that gets noticed – do that a couple of times in a row and you’re the new prophet!

Look at it this way: Supposing one of us had said Hamilton and McLaren for the championship at this time last year – he’d have been laughed at (everyone was going for Raikkonen or Alonso). Okay, so all those people were right but who were they? Too many names to remember, that’s who.

Now, say Hamilton and McLaren had won (and they very nearly did), the guy who said that would be a hero. Hey, that’s real discernment, we’d be thinking. It might have been just a lucky guess but it would sure look good.

There is more to life than just being right. ;)

Green Flag: For Ferrari read FIAT and for McLaren read Mercedes – they’re virtually the same thing and certainly more so than BMW Sauber is just a part of the BMW empire. The point you’re making is really that Ferrari and McLaren are the establishment because they’ve been racing a long time. So has Williams and so has Renault (off and on). It really doesn’t matter a bit – the corporate style teams will never win, as demonstrated by Toyota, Ford and maybe Honda, and the real racing teams, the ones left to get on with racing, whoever owns them (Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, BMW, Renault) will continue to win. No big deal.

But those guys in teams like BMW and Williams work just as hard as Ferrari’s and McLaren’s employees and it is right and inevitable that, sooner or later, they will win (and perhaps become the establishment themselves). All I’m saying is that their moment has come now.

And, if I’m right, next year you’ll all be saying Nico for champ, BMW for the constructors! Which will mean I’ll have to suggest something like Glock and Toro Rosso, just to stay ahead of the game.

Both McLaren and Ferrari have lost their edge before yet F1 survived and somehow coped. Another period in which they have to struggle wouldn’t go amiss at all.

29. Nico Savidge
11th March 2008, 3:11

Who will have the best car? Based on testing, Ferrari. But I think Monaco and Hungary will belong to McLaren. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Highly unlikely, but if there’s a big first corner crash and some rain Fernando might come through and take oneHow will Williams do? I’d like to see them be better than BMW, and (like you said) I think they will at the beginning of the year before ze Germans get a better grip on the car.Who will win the first race? Kimi Raikkonen [I hope]Will traction control make the racing better?Definitely, especially at the wet races. It’s gonna be interesting seeing oversteer-happy Lewis Hamilton have to manage the tail end
What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? "Fisichella" [just kidding]What will be the biggest surprise of the year? How well Heikki Kovalainen adjusts to the new McLaren seatWhich driver will be dropped first? Sadly, Anthony Davidson – I like him, but Super Aguri needs sponsorship money. I hate to say this, but we might welcome back Yamamoto or Ide this year….Who will be the most impressive rookie? Sebastien Bordais – like Sebastian Vettel, he’ll need a few GPs to get himself comfortable, but once he does… What will be the biggest political issue of the year? Customer cars, definitely – look for the manufacturers to get mad when Toro Rosso starts scoring more points than they do.Champion driver and team? Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari [I hope]

30. Who will have the best car? Ferrari, with McLaren not far behind, and Williams making continued progress. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Yes, BMW will get at least one, and Williams and Renault at least one between them. How will Williams do? They should be in the points on a regular basis, grab 3-4 podiums and win one race if they get the right mix.Who will win the first race? Raikkonen. Will traction control make the racing better? Yes, unless some top dirvers, such as Massa, don’t adapt to it well. What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Bernie and/or Max- perhaps the supremo has something surface that gives him a nasty taste of the scandals he seems to love. What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Either BMW, Williams or Renault challenging as a legitimate third contender.Which driver will be dropped first? Barrichello.Who will be the most impressive rookie? PiquetWhat will be the biggest political issue of the year? Continued discussion over the future of Ron Dennis, and the future of several different races and venues. Hopefully that includes a return for the USGP in the 2009 schedule, and the Australian GP has a secure spot also.Champion driver and team? Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari.

31. not that I wish him that but I have that bad feeling that Bourdais will be one of the disapointments of the season …

32. Who will have the best car? McLaren. Ferrari might have the speed, but I get the feeling that there are some gremlins in their car. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? I think one or two races might be won between Alonso, Rosberg, and the two BMW boys. How will Williams do? A very solid third Who will win the first race? Kimi Raikkonen Will traction control make the racing better? Yes, drivers will have to pay for mistakes now. Now if we can get rid of paved runoff areas. What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Racism-gate. I get the feeling that we haven’t heard the last from the Spanish fans. What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Nakajima. Which driver will be dropped first? Trulli… in a straight jacket Who will be the most impressive rookie? Since Nakajima isn’t technically a rookie… Nelson Piquet Jnr What will be the biggest political issue of the year? The growing fight for control of F1 between the CVC holding group and Bernie. I sense that the company will want to drop him rather than later. Especially with dropping earning margins and the brutish management style. Champion driver and team? Kimi Raikkonen, however McLaren two drivers will be more consistent and win the constructor championship.

33. Who will have the best car? Ferrari, as long as they address reliability. Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? I’d say Alonso, through sheer drive and determination, may pick up a surprise somewhere. How will Williams do? I had a dream recently that both Williams drivers ended up on the podium at the same time. Think 3rd or 4th may be ambitious, but certainly doable from testing. Who will win the first race? Kimi, unless something dire happens. Who knows, maybe the other Finn, who’se debut race for Renault last year was "diabolical", could make an impressive start. Will traction control make the racing better? It may make the racing more sloppier in terms of technical ability, but these drivers are meant to be the best in the world so I see them adapting very quickly. By the end of the season it may not be that much different. It’ll be more interesting to observe which drivers cope with it throughout the season. What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Maybe ECU. What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Honda WILL be as bad as everyone didn’t expect! Maybe Force India could upset a thing here or there. Which driver will be dropped first? Coulthard or Rubens. Although Ross Brawn has a prior working relationship with Rubens which may (or may not) work in his favour. Who will be the most impressive rookie? Bourdais is probably the more interesting rookie pre-season with his Champ car success and known determination, however he won’t be as successful as the others in the Torro Rosso. What will be the biggest political issue of the year? Fixtures for the racing calenders ahead. Champion driver and team? Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari.

34. Who will have the best car? MCL Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? BMW
How will Williams do? they can finish anywhere between 4th and 6th Who will win the first race? Kimi Will traction control make the racing better? No, the drivers will be used to after a couple of races. I don’t count Massa as a driver here. What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? MCLgate2 What will be the biggest surprise of the year? In the past there was always a disappointment within the top teams (2005 Ferrari, 2006 MCL, 2007 Renault). I will put my money on Renault, but BMW may also deserve this honor. Which driver will be dropped first? Fisi Who will be the most impressive rookie? Bourdais What will be the biggest isssue of the year? New circuits to come, old europe circuits to be left behind Champion driver and team? Kimi, Ferrari (if they solve the problems with realibility).

35. “predictions”

Who will have the best car?
Will anyone other than McLaren and Ferrari win a race? Of coure, BMW, Torro Roso and Renault

What word will have the suffix ‘-gate’ added to it? Spa

What will be the biggest surprise of the year? Honda won’t be as bad as everyone expects, almost worse.

Which driver will be dropped first? Piquet, into the wall.

Who will be the most impressive rookie? Timo Glock.

What will be the biggest political issue of the year? Ma’s ********.

Champion driver and team? Lewis and Ferrari.
