Claudioff predicted the podium correctly - and Alonso in fourth!

Claudioff named the top four finishers in the Chinese Grand Prix and wins “The Lotus Story” DVD boxset for the best prediction this weekend.

And there’s now just a single point between the championship leaders after the fourth round. See below for the full standings.

This week’s runner-up prize winner is iBlaze, who was one of seven players to score 21 points. But iBlaze won the tie-breaker by coming closes to predicting Sebastian Vettel’s pole position time correctly.

Carina Gascoine, Laura D, Dominik Kolodziej, hamlesix f1, CyclopsPL and James Leonard also scored 21 points this weekend.

Jenson Button was far from the most popular choice of winner – he was picked by 50 players, with more people choosing Lewis Hamilton (426), Sebastian Vettel (339) or Fernando Alonso (55).

While J-Canada holds onto the championship lead, Arpi_ is now only one point behind. With 750 points remaining to be won this year, there’s still a long way to go in this year’s championship. See the standings for all 2,500 players below.

And if you didn’t win this weekend remember you still have time to win one of five copies of “Art of the Formula 1 Race Car”.

The prizes

This year we’re giving away a pair of prizes every race weekend.

On top of that at the end of the year the top 12 finishers all get prizes – and whoever scores the highest overall will be going to the 2011 British Grand Prix. Here are the prizes in full:

Grand prize: Two grandstands tickets to the 2011 British Grand Prix

The person who scores the most points in the 2010 F1 Fanatic Predictions Championship will win grandstand tickets to the 2011 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

This is the first time we’ve offered F1 race tickets as a prize at F1 Fanatic and I hope you all agree it’s a fitting reward for the F1 expert who can best predict who will be on top in 2010.

The grand prize winner will receive tickets to all three days of the 2011 British Grand Prix with reserved grandstand seating for the race.

Second place prize: An F1 painting of your choice

The second place finisher in the championship will win an F1 painting by Rob Ijbema.

You get to choose which F1 driver, present or past, will feature in the painting. Or you can pick one of the other motor racing paintings on Rob’s site Car-a-day.

Runners-up prizes: Autocourse 2010-2011

The ten players who finish in third to 12th positions in the championship will win a copy of the 2010-2011 edition of Autocourse.

The highly respected journal of Formula 1 and other major international four-wheeled racing series is published at the end of every season.

This year the publication marks its 60th anniversary edition.

Duke are also offering a special promotion exclusive to all F1 Fanatic readers – whenever you order from them you can get 15% off using the promotional code F1Fanatic at the checkout.

  1. I’m being fairly consistent. Ufortunately, I’m benig consistently bad.

    1. Same here- I’ve scored 5, 4, 4, 7

That puts me joint 273rd. No chance of me being enlightened about the history of Lotus any time soon I’m afraid…

      1. I just slipped down to 490th place. This is just proving you have to be lucky … and i’m not :p

      2. I scored pretty good on the first race but slipped after that. Still keeping myself up there a bit but dropped down in the stands from 60th something to shared 84th. I need to stop predict before FP1 even started and wait until FP3 completed I guess ;)

A link to the predictions list would be nice. I don’t recall what Pole time I picked nor the exact order. Would just be fun to see what one got right especially on the pole how close you where. I know I was way of because I was predicting a wet quali if I don’t recall wrong.

        20th April 2010, 23:02

I’m joint 273rd as well but I fell from 147th. Missed Vettel, Hamilton and Rosburg by 1 place :(

    2. Me too, not sure who’s having the worse start to the season, me or Michael Schumacher.

Nearly got the pole time, but there’s no points for that!

  2. I thought my points were wrong since I’d calculated them at 19 points, but I went back to check my predictions and for some inexplicable reason there is De Le Rosa in 3rd place instead of Rosberg :(

    1. Ah, De La Rosa is situated alphabetically right below Rosberg. For Sepang I couldn’t submit a prediction at all because my phone’s browser didn’t play nice, and this week I managed to get Opera Mobile to work with the predictions but then buggered it up :( If I believed in the fates I would suspect they were against me.

      1. How unlucky, yet look at the bright side, your still 5th!!!

  3. Keith, how do I check my predictions? I looked at the Chinese GP prediction page and it showed the predictions for Bahrain.

    1. Yeah, I had to fiddle around a bit and submit a race id (attribute name: mrl_race) of 24 with the show predictions form to get it to display the predictions for Shanghai.

    2. Hi,

What happens when you change the dropdown box at the bottom to another race ?

There is a little bit of Javascript that should kick in and redisplay the predictions for the selected race.

If it’s not doing that, then can you let me know which browser you are using and if there are any Javascript errors reported. In Firefox choose Tool->Error Console (not sure about IE) and see if anything gets logged.

I’m looking at add some new features to the plugin next week and if there is a bug I can fix that at the same time.

      Ian.

      1. The problem is that when you load the predictions championship page, it’s not populating the select box with any race options. In fact just above the form it says “No races available in this championship.” So if you click “Show Predictions” it defaults to the Bahrain race. And nope, no javascript errors.

        1. Thanks for the info.

It seems like you might be on last years championship page – hence the message ‘No races….’

Can you confirm the full URL of the page that you are using to view predictions, maybe there is a stale link ?

If you are on the right page – then that sounds like a bug – and I’ll get it fixed.

          Ian.

          1. URL is https://www.racefans.net/community/f1-fanatic-predictions-championship/

I suspect that because it’s offering a form to make predictions, it’s checking whether there are any races to make predictions for and then not populating the select box so that you can view predictions. Maybe just a simple Select Race drop down and a show predictions button if there isn’t a race to predict?

As an aside, this is another area where a login system would be very useful, as you could easily track your own predictions.

  4. keith, i just realized i entered my prediction for bahrain as “Einar Iliyev” under my full real name. Is there any way you can add that to my standard “Einar AI” score?

    1. No, sorry – you need to make sure you use the same name for your predictions.

      1. Why not have a login system for the site? That way all comments and competitions etc can use the login and there is no risk of typo’s etc in name/email. Would also prevent someone from say; pretending to be J-Canada and predicting an HRT race victory in Spain.

        1. Good point puffy!

        2. That can’t be done unless you know J-Canada’s e-mail adress.

          1. Except I’m not sure it takes email into account since it will create a duplicate entry with the same email address and different username. But fair point :) I still think a login system would make it easier. You could also track your progress, review your predictions, view past comments or replies to your comments, etc.

          2. Yeah that’s true. You could pick your favourite articles and get comments from there (that’s impossible now the rss is not completely working).

        3. It’s something I’d like to have but haven’t had the time/expertise to sort it out yet. But offers of help are always welcome from people who are good at that sort of thing:

  5. in the words of the great top gear… I’m Ambitious, but Rubbish

  6. Does anybody else here towards the end of a Grand Prix start thinking, “Damn it, that guys not in my prediction!”

    1. Frequently! As well as: “Arrrgghh! I was going to pick him to finish 4th but changed it to 3rd at the last second!”

    2. Actualy it happens very often to me after the qualify: “Damn, Vettel again…”. I was so wrong predicting the qualify that I forgot completly about my race predictions! It was a enormous suprise to discovery I had won this time!

    3. “towards the end of a Grand Prix start thinking”
Mate, I think about it from start to finish!
I wanted Alonso to overtake Rosberg real bad, because I predicted him on 4th, and not 5th :)

    4. Yep ! I was so praying for Lewis to get past Button as I’d picked Lewis for the win & Button second. Ah well, c’est la vie!

    Another miniscule-scoring round for me…
At least I’m consistent though. If this was a 100 round championship I might stand a better chance.

  8. I hope I can bring some new improvements for the first race in Europe. That should get me closer to the leaders …

Otherwise I will just have to change my focus to 2011.

    1. Have a Red Bull. It’ll give you new wings ;-)

      1. My prediction will break down or fail in strategy calls though …

  9. how do i search for my position??

    1. Try pressing shift and F3 at the same time. Type in what you want to search. Worked for me anyway

      1. ctrl+f and enter your name. You’re 84th.

  10. Woohoo – I’ve moved into the top 100! A nice haul of 19 points last round.

    1. Jonathan Proctor
      20th April 2010, 15:41

      Woohoo – I’ve moved into the top 1000! :P

I’m joint 556th. 3 points in Bahrain 0 in Australia (forgot to enter) 1 in Malaysia and 11 in China. I have a habit of voting for my favourite drivers looks like it paid off :D

  11. Lucky for some, I missed 2 races Bahrain and Malaysia since i was doing coursework at the time and completely forgeting. So unless I can get a few decent results i’ve got no chance catching up.

Though it’s a fair good chance to do it since this season has not been so simple to predict.

  12. Wow!! I moved from rank 600 something to rank 184!!

    Doubled my points from 11 to 22 :D :D

Hope to continue the improving form for the rest of the season

  13. What do bah, mel, sep, and sha stand for?

    1. Hang on just worked that one out!

  14. Ooops…my broadband connection stopped working last weekend and resulted DNF for me.. :(
The good news is still joint 21st :) :)

  15. Who was best in predicting the pole time?
I was put on the wrong foot by the articles about shattered laptimes on all circuits, so I used the 2004 pole time as reference. I was way off ;-(
But few points meant a great leap forward. Now I am with the first 1000.

  16. Keith Hi!

Sorry, but I think there was error in calculations.
I took part this champ from 2nd round (Melbourne), but in the current result page I can see this:

Player Rank Bah Mel Sep Sha Total
    Andrey Aleshkov 1203 3 0 4 0 7

And in the last round (Shahir) I made true prediction about pole-position at least, but I have 0 points in this column.

And one thing that I have to say – my brother takes part this champ too. His name is Ilya Aleshkov.
And I think that it’s maybe source of this confusion.

Player Rank Bah Mel Sep Sha Total
    Ilya Aleshkov 760 0 2 2 7 11
    Andrey Aleshkov 1203 3 0 4 0 7

Sorry. Great site! Thank a lot for your work!

  17. I predict J-Canada to loose the lead by next race :)
If I get it do I take any points?!

  18. argh! 320th which isn’t bad, but completely missed Malaysia being the pillock I am

  19. Well i have been in the points at all races so far, but onlz minor points. Then again consistency brought me from 1360 after Bahrain to 164 now, so not too bad (there is almost 2.500 people wors off).

    1. The last few races there were fewer than 1000 people predicting though.

  20. Well, not bad, I jumped from 19th position to 17th, but the competition becomes even hotter, because the results are so close…

  21. Absolutely awful round for me, but I still lie 9th! Not bad at all!

  22. joint 21st! slowly moving up the grid! would be interesting to know if ‘hanalou’ (3rd) has made any predictions since the opening round. either that or they have been just rubbish since lol

  23. Just to clear up a question I’m getting asked a lot: if you change your user name between rounds you cannot then have your different sets of predictions merged together.

In short, stick to the same user name to avoid problems!

  24. Do I get anything for having the closest qualifying time (0.025s off the actual time)?

    My Guess: 1:34.583 Actual: 1:34.558 !!! SO CLOSE !!!

Also can you add a feature so we can guess the top 10 qualifiers?

It was the same 10 in Bahrain and China.

The top 4 teams, Kubica & Sutil.

    1. Also can you add a feature so we can guess the top 10 qualifiers?

No – I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to join in and if they are faced with filling in a form with 20-odd fields that’s going to discourage people from participating.

Do I get anything for having the closest qualifying time

Afraid not – it’s only a tie-breaker – but well done! Did anyone get closer than that?

      1. Someone missed the pole time by 0,001 seconds.

        1. I think I predicted 01:34.581 but not 100% sure. Keith is it possible to have a confirmation email sent showing your predictions after you submit them? I always seem to forget what order I predicted….:-/

  25. I put this in the prediction thread voting closed, but I see some people asking for pole time predictions so I thought I better put it here also.

The median pole time (time that was predicted most often) was around 1:34.8. Not far off the actual time. 70% of the predictions where within 1 second of the actual pole time.

A lot of people where really close to the pole time prediction. The five closest ones were:
    Player Diff
    DaveG 0,001
    Barry Turner 0,002
    RCole 0,003
    mash -0,003
    HounslowBusGarage -0,003

The predictions for pole where of course between Vettel and Hamilton:
    Pole Perc Number
    VET 46,14% 448
    HAM 42,22% 410
    BUT 3,30% 32

Amazingly Webber got only 18 “votes” for pole.

For the race win we have the following predictions:
    P1 Perc Number
    HAM 43,77% 425
    VET 34,81% 338
    ALO 5,66% 55

If it’s going to be a weather influenced race, a lot could happen, but I doubt Hamilton will win a dry race from P6.

Again Webber gets only 23 votes while he has been almost as fast as Vettel all weekend/season and is driving the fastest car of the field. The guy has some serious image issues

I gave the predictions F1 style scores again and added all those up. For instance a prediction with HAM to finish on P1 and ALO on P2 would give HAM 25 points and ALO 18 points.

The resulting top 10 scores from 971 predictions are:

    Driver Score
    HAM 17801
    VET 16257
    BUT 9844
    ALO 8799
    ROS 8399
    WEB 5818
    MAS 4677
    SCH 3453
    KUB 1710
    SUT 448

That actually looks pretty accurate as a prediction for the grid. Just swap Hamilton and Webber and your pretty close.

I am looking forward to going home now

  27. Hi Keith, I predicted pole position correctly for the last two races yet have received no points. Am I doing something wrong?

If that’s 4:57 GMT it would have been after the deadline I’m afraid.

      1. thanks for the clarification on what might happend. Keith, is there a way to not to make an entry if it is already past deadline? is it fair that if the system “accepts” (and not so late) an entry should be counted? 1. Keith, is there a way to not to make an entry if it is already past deadline?

If you mean “is there a way to make a prediction after the deadline?”, then the answer is no.

    2. Yeah, it looks like the whole group of late prediction posters didn’t get any points.

These all seem to have missed out:

How can I win with such a large body of competition? Were it, say, 150 or so, I might be able to finish in the top 100 at least (maybe top 140?)

So, for the next race I’m going to throw myself on the shrine of Drivers Past, the one in my basement, and hope that perhaps Ascari or Stacey and Bristow will take pity on me and provide my selection with a bit of “outside assistance”.
