A terrific race in Montreal yesterday which is already getting very high ratings in the ‘rate the race’ poll. Here’s today’s round-up:

Simmering rivalries at F1 summit (BBC)

“This week, team principal Martin Whitmarsh has said that the radio message given to Hamilton that Button would not overtake him [in Turkey] was only ‘an opinion’ from chief race engineer, Phil Prew, and that he was wrong. My information is that Prew was only ‘wrong’ insofar as the team, like Hamilton, did not expect Button to make the move he did.”

Comment of the day

Did Michael Schumacher deserve the criticism he faced after the Canadian Grand Prix? Rantsonf1 (nice name!) says no:

I think some of you are channelling Coulthard and Brundle. Schumacher drove like a seven-time world champion would. He fights and he doesn’t give up.

The Kubica incident was brilliant aggressive driving. Schumacher had to cut the chicane because Kubica wasn’t turning and they would have collided. The end result was bad for Schumacher.

The Massa incident was just bad luck for Massa. By then Schumacher had no tires and no traction and it makes sense that he would brake early.

I, for one, am glad that Schumacher is back. He has demonstrated that he is still capable of aggressive driving and the drive to one.

That is who someone becomes a world champion. Someone should mention that to Coulthard and Brundle.

Three years ago today BMW announced Robert Kubica would not be able to drive in the forthcoming race at Indianapolis following his horrific crash at Montreal.

Instead their reserve driver – Sebastian Vettel – would make his grand Prix debut.

  1. Fun fact: last night’s Canadian Grand Prix was the first time three World Champions have been on the podium since Phoenix 1991 (when it was Senna, Prost and Piquet … I think).

    1. I think we once had Villeneuve in the BAR on the podium with Schumi and Hakkinen in Spain (think it was 2000 or 2001)

  2. Fun fact: Lewis Hamilton has scored triple figures in 75% of his F1 seasons, 3 out of 4.

    1. Actually he has scored triple figures in half of his F1 seasons.
      2007: 109 points
      2008: 98 points
      2009: 49 points
      2010 (After 8 rounds): 109 points.

  3. I dont know what Coulthard and Brundle have said about Schumacher, but you guys are lucky you dont have to listen to polish commentators every race. They dont know whats going on around them and on the track; and at every occasion they keep saying Schumacher return was a mistake. Its annoying like hell. They didnt even noticed Schumacher was on softs too long and thats why he was struggling so much at the end :/ (but at least we dont have adverts in the middle of the race – so if thats the price I can stand stupid commentators :)

    1. Heh. The Finnish commentators talk over radio communications. That always ticks me off. My wife told me to quit yelling at the TV. :)

      1. Well Australia have there own hour pre race show and they didn’t even mention Webber had a 5 place grid drop until about 5 minutes befor the race.

        And we have ads, with such a short lap we were missing 3 – 4 laps every time they went to a break.

        God I wish we had the BBC.

          “This is uhh… Schumacher coming around the chicane very fast, stay tuned for more action.”

          “Welcome back to the Formula One International World Championship grand prix from Canda. Hamilton is currently in the lead and it is lap 55-SHUT UP GIVE THE FEED TO THE BBC.

          1. :)Karan, I tell you what,we will swap Martin Brundle for one of your alcoholics,you can feed him to the sharks in Sydney harbour>LOL

    2. We don’t have adverts during the race either now!

    3. Both of our esteemed commentators managed to miss Button overtaking Alonso in yesterday’s race. And I seem to remember that it was Brundle talking at the time, so the usual Legard-bashers can belt up for once!

    4. Hey chaostheory – glad I can commiserate. Yeah, they’re quite terrible. I haven’t been back in the country long enough to get their names, but it’s a bit of a Leggard-Brundle conundrum. The guy who does the colour commentary is quite good, but the main guy is is really, truly, very awful.

      1. As a Legard-basher I will point out that yes, Brundle missed something, but Legard missed many things.

  4. Did anybody else notice that while a helicopter shot was showing, you could clearly see Button go past Alonso, and Brundle and Legard completely failed to notice? And that they didn’t comment on it for a while even after it cut to a ground shot of Button leading Alonso? One of the worst bits of commentating I’ve seen on British TV, even with Legard on the team for 2 years.

    1. yes, i noticed that. It looked quite obvious to me but it took them a while for the penny to drop.

      1. I’m amazed at how little Legard seems to take in what’s going on or maybe more specifically unable to relay it to the listener. I was re-watching a few old races from last season last week and I swear at times he might as well have just gone “oh s**t look at that” at times with his generic “now what’s going on there?” moments. Not sure he is really ‘commentator’ material personally.

        To be fair to both though this race the monitor’s in the comm box looked tiny and with a heli shot like that the cars would probably have been indistinguishable.

    2. That’s because they were too busy sticking in the knife into Shumacher.

    3. I remember the bit where Brundle and Allen missed Schumacher’s championship winning pass in 2002! But let’s not get carried away with our critcicism of Brundle. Save it for Legard ;)

    1. Yeah! I wondered that as well. To be honest it looked kinda dodgy, But if that is the low point of the race, I shouldn’t complain.

    Wasn’t Schumacher on the inside of the corner?

    1. Short answer: no.

    2. No he definately wasn’t, but my opinion is that it was still, at least partially, Schumachers fault. They both went off the track because Kubica understeered into the corner, something that may well have been triggered by dirty tires because Schumacher pushed him off the road moments beforehand

        1. I first thought the drivers should be given the freedom to operate it… Not just the chasing driver. It is like, handicapping the driver in front.

          But on a second thought, it must be intended to make the chasing car less vulnerable (or sensitive) to the dirty air from the car in front? or kind of a compensation to the chasing car that suffers the dirty air.

  8. Completely disagree with the COTD. I don’t care about the Kubica “incident” but it’s clear Schumacher cut across at Massa in their tangle – far more blatantly than Vettel did on Webber in Turkey, and most of the blame went Vettel’s way then.

    Then there was the fact that he cut the chicane so many times I stopped counting. Bad tyres is no excuse for that, especially when he kept the position he was defending also.

    1. The difference is Massa was still behind Schumacher when he cut across, if he had braked earlier they wouldn’t have collided (still Schumi’s fault, but not the same as Turkey incident).

      I agree about the chicane cutting, Hulkenberg did it a bunch of times too, although I do seem to remember him letting someone past after doing it.

  10. I think Schumacher was defending very hard. But after he had been on the super sofst he must have been a sitting duck for Massa. But on those tyres he had to brake early, so Massa should have taken that in account and be carefull of the old fox.

    Later in the race i had the feeling Liuzzi was very carefull not to risk his race in getting past Schumi (whose tyres were completely gone by then). So he waited for some laps until the right moment presented itself. It worked double, for Sutil as well.

    I for one am happy to see Michael fighting. Kubica was hardly a softy as well with the move on Sutil (cutting up Sutils tyre in the proces). We saw some tough racing between those guys on thrack, but nothing of it was really unsafe.

    After years of seeing each little spat on track punished with drive through/stop and go, time penalties and places at the next race it seems we got used to having the Stewards punish racing moves for so long, we actually have the feeling it is right like that.

    I am happy we can see real racing and fighting on track again, and i hope to be able to see it for a long time to go.

  11. It was nice to see the old fired up Schuamcher. It shows that he still have what it takes to be a WC again only if his car is fast.
