Today I’m heading south to Goodwood in time for the Festival of Speed which starts tomorrow. If you’re going to be there do let me know via the comments or on Twitter.

Here’s today’s round-up:

Formula 1 in CSI: New York. Sort of (Youtube)

It’s hard to pick what’s best about this clip from a “CSI: New York” episode (which I think is a month or two old but I don’t follow the series so it’s new to me). Is it the “Monaco 400”? The surprise appearance of Robert Kubica’s Montreal 2007 crash pictures? Or Danica Patrick’s cringe-worthy cameo?

F1 diary: European Grand Prix (The Daily Telegraph)

“I catch up with [Webber] later in the evening and he relates the slow-motion sensations he’d felt within the cockpit, where he was calmly trying to work out whether or not there were any bridges to hit at that point on the circuit – his biggest concern. He knew only that he was flying, but had no idea about altitude. He discusses the incident calmly, as though it had been some trifling inconvenience. ”

2002 BMW M5 First Owner – Mark Webber (Auto Trader)

Fortunately it’s in better conditions than his last car…

Behind the scenes at the European GP (BBC)

“Asked how much the new blown diffuser was worth, [Alonso] said: ‘It’s difficult to know. We need to check on the track. The theoretical numbers that we have sometimes are a little bit less than expected; sometimes a little bit more. Most of the times a little bit less than expected, so we need to check this.’ Alonso is saying that from his past experience with new parts brought to the F10, the theoretical numbers from the wind tunnel and design office do not always match what the drivers find on track.”

Comment of the day

In response to FOTA’s efforts to cut F1 teams’ emissions, Alex argues F1 teams should be encourages to do more to develop useful green technologies:

I see why F1 wants to set an example (because everything is about going green these days). But the way they do it irritates me a lot.

Why not let the team experiment with electric motors, hydrogen fuel cells, turbine engines and what not? Instead they opt to go for a technology that is developed by car manufacturers for years now, and that is close to perfection.

If they really want to make a difference they shouldn’t do in it such a half-assed way.
Alex

Ronnie Peterson scored his first F1 win at Paul Ricard in 1973 after his Lotus team mate Emerson Fittipaldi collided with early leader Jody Scheckter.

This video tells the story. Watch out for Colin Chapman doing his best to get run over by his own car while celebrating the victory in his traditional style:

  1. lol, i think ‘monaco 400’ is the best, or the worst.

    1. I guess those of us in the states dont recognize something as a motorsports event unless it has ‘—-hundred’ in the title ;)

    2. As a scientist and a motorsport nut, CSI is just pure comedy on all levels.

      1. as a filmmaker, it’s PAINFUL

        1. Excruciating, really. At least the few episodes I saw of the original series were a kind of guilty pleasure – this stuff just goes for the lowest lowest common denominator, and then goes lower just to make sure.

      2. as a motor fan and a narcoleptic I find i…

    3. I liked the images of Kubica’s car there as well, were those the most recent images of a “street track” they could get hold of?

Maybe the FOM will sue them for using Monaco and the images without permission! 8-)

    4. I think CSI could use Alonso in an episode like this; it would be a Cheese and Whine party.

  2. My response to that CSI video was just “oh the yanks really don’t get our sport do they?”

Good thing they didn’t use a Ferrari pic of some sort, we know what Ferrari’s lawyers are like for hounding people…

    1. That show has always sucked. The reason they say Monaco 400 is because they don’t want to pay for the rights to say Nascar, or Daytona 500, or the Monaco Grand Prix (yea, I know they payed for Danica, but she will wh@&e herself out for anything with a television camera).

It’s not that we don’t get F1 or that Hollywood couldn’t figure it out quickly, it’s that stupid shows like this one won’t pay Bernie (or the NFL, MLB, NBA, FIFA, or whatever) for the rights….

  3. wow, little bit of everything in this roundup :)
where to begin? how about danica patrick? ouch!

    1. the whole clip is just so cringingly bad lol

      1. Indeed, is it just ‘us’ or what?
I tought csi was a ‘good’ show :)

    2. is it actually danica?

      1. Yes, it is Danica Patrick, tipped to win the Monaco 400 a couple of years back, which actually took place in Canada :P

        1. hey keith, David A’s pun for comment of the day!!!

    3. That CSI is funny, sure they wanted to avoid paying a boatload of money for the rights, and the street track was Canada, but still nice try.
And it shows the cr*p about Danica not wanting into F1, she would love to but is not good enough to make the cut.

Webber has nice choice of cars, that BMW is a pretty good ride! A shame it is right hand drive, would not work in mainland Europe, so ill pass over this chance.

    4. I’m not sure whether I find it hilarious or embarrassing…

  4. Here’s a ‘duh’! Nothing final though, just blah blah.
“Moveable rear wing idea could be ditche”.
“Plans for adjustable rear wings next year are not set in stone, according to Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA) chairman Martin Whitmarsh”.
    http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/story/21887.html

    1. Typo…..ditched”.
(Hope I still get F1 after I become American in a few weeks).

      1. You will still be looking forward to the US GP in Austin, or will you be rallying for the “Monaco 400” after that?

I think it sounds good to try the effects of it. Seems Brawn is pretty much supportive of it (he knows a lot about movable/flexible wings from Ferrari). Just let them show what it does, but only use it if nessicary.

        1. US GP? Maybe it should be called the Austin 200.
Some versions of state-side sprint car racing use a massive (25 sq ft) movable wing. Very dodgy looking.

It looks like we’re going to have to solve this case …

Oh, what? There was supposed to be a line about putting on sunglasses that didn’t show for some reason. The joke is now ruined. Stupid internets.

      1. this time it’s personal.

      2. Lol don’t worry, I think most people would understand the joke, which made my day incidentally.

  6. that csi episode is great, it even has a dodgy bit about kers, but they call it the vic engine.

  7. I’m gonna have to watch this CSI now…. *sigh*

My article of the day is from ITV Whitmarsh: F1 right to try moveable wing.

I do actually want to see what happens, this is what F1 needs. We all know of some of the great experiments in motor racing, like the Ground Effect cars, the Fan Cars, the 6 wheelers… This is something of an audacious experiment. Lets embrace it.

The wing will fail safe, so no nasty surprises. They can reduce the scope of movement if required, if it turns out to be too much. Isn’t this the kind of invention that occurred in the ‘golden era’?

    1. no, not at all. the ‘golden era’ (which in my opinion never existed) never had fake artificial devises like this, that only serve as a push-to-pass that cannot be defended against.

      1. Rules can be changed according to progress, there’s plenty of time for this before the next season, but the device itself imo isn’t a bad idea.

I recognise there will be different points of view, as a lot of people thought it a bad idea to start with. I’m just one of the people that don’t think it’s a bad idea. I speak from what I find interesting in F1. Many people don’t agree it seems.

Ultimately, how will we know unless it’s tried out. It could be genius, it could be a flop. If it’s the latter get rid of it.

        1. I agree that the device itself isn’t inherently bad. Allowing the trailing driver to use it, and not the leading driver is very bad. It creates artificial and dishonest racing. If everyone can use it whenever they want, it basically would function as a better performing F-duct. I see no problem with that.

          1. Also less drag will mean the cars will use less fuel, and therefore they are “greener”. :P

        2. I do think this approach is good. Let them come up with something, make prototypes, test it and look what it does.

I would love to have some cars running a test on track at say Abu Dhabi – Alonso chasing Hamilton with it, or the Red Bulls or Michael overtaking Rosberg with it.

Do it in front of the viewers, let everybody see what your experimenting with.

I agree on bringing in loads of fresh ideas to experiment with and experiment openly, if possible.

        3. I agree with you Hare. I’d like to see it tried out as it sounds like it may solve some of F1’s problems. I have a hard time understanding the ‘everyone should be allowed to use it’ mentality. For many years now, the leading driver has been given an unfair advantage due to the aerodynamics of the cars and hopefully this device will balance that out. We have seen many races in the past where a less competitive car with a less competent driver has lead a better car/driver because they have the advantage of being in clean air. Actually, it may not even be the advantage of clean air, but just the fact that they are ahead on the track!

  8. Fantastic the paul ricard clip. I dont know what its the craziest: the pit exit going towards 4 other cars or Chapman leaping through the middle of the track. And Fittipaldi, the men who lead the way for the brazilians.

I’d say the craziest thing was Emmo’s hair.

  9. Unlike F1, it seems CSI needs a dose of “improving the show”

    1. Ha! ^comment of the day

  10. It’s from this episode from february: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1584199/

    1. Yep, saw it at the time. I like CSI (NY and Vegas), it’s all nonsense, but it’s entertaining.

The cars Danica and the others raced in the rest of the episode looked like Formula BMWs or something.

    That clip was excellent!

In modern F1 they would of broken 6 thousand rules with their celebrations but it looks loads more fun :)

    1. It would have got them disqualified immediately! Great show.

I liked the commentary “fittipaldi retired with suspension damage” where the picture showed his car without a nose and the wheel in a strange angle.

      1. They would probably get a penalty but keep the win. Then Ferrari would cry about it for weeks

  12. What about the FOTA Fans Forum today, will you be there Keith?

I read at least 2 posters who said they will be so i hope we get some interesting feedback in the next days!

from what Withmarsh says about the movable rear wings, i get the feeling the teams are now not so sure, they want this (just like most fans).
I hope they leave it in the rules but just agree on not using it for now as they did with KERS this year. Leave the option open for the future if it’s deemed usefull/needed.

    1. I should be there, yes.

      1. Would be nice to meet you Keith!

        1. That’s great to have you there!

Grill them with questions and show them what the average F1Fanatic wants to see.
We had loads of polls and the great “how to make F1 better” articles here (F1tastic job Keith!) so ther’s enough to bring into that discussion.

I must say i like the initiative, if FOTA keeps doing thing like this and have a lot more of it during GP weekends and testing they might be on the right track!

          1. Got plenty of questions lined up in my brain. As well as the question i used to get my seat!

  13. Just got on the train to FOTA fans forum! Can’t wait to get there! 2 hours to go.

    1. Cool – would love to get a first hand account.

  14. the rear wing thing wont be much different to the F Duct,
possibly will do a better job that is all.

there is a nice pic of what the underneath of a Red Bull double difuser looks like.
you probably will not see this again in a hurry.

    http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/739/raiuno20100627142031.jpg

    1. Lets hope not!
Red Bull gives wings, but seeing them fly like that each race would not be very funny.

      1. Red Bull giveth, and Red Bull taketh them away… poor old Heikki was like victimised fly afterward.. both wings removed. :)

Can’t help but be impressed by the strength of those things, imagine how many drivers would be alive today had they been driving in those cars. Gilles springs immediately to mind.

        1. Don’t forget the track safety standard have improved massiveley as well. In Gilles Villenueuve’s crash theres no way the barriers would be so close to the track in todays f1.

      2. I think the ‘closing speeds’ issue was simply brought up because of an overreaction after Webber’s crash. If you take a look at the onboard replay again you will see that WEB was only barely going faster then KOV, despite the fact that he was bouncing on the limiter and only about 1.5 meters behind him, he still wanted mistakenly follow KOV’s slipstream, but KOV already had to brake – and because of that it first looked as though Webber had much bigger top speed, as DC first in the heat of moment said, but if you look at speed trap data you will see that KOV was 1 km/h faster than Webber in qualifying, that also explains why it was so difficult for Webber to overtake and why he was barely closing up on KOV even though he was right behind him in his slipstream and even using the f-duct.
I’am not advocating the ‘Mario kart’ stile rear wing, but I think it would be interesting and good for the sport to have the adjustable rear wings.

    2. Would you buy a used car from this man? ;)

      1. Well it doesn’t say it’s had any accident damage, so maybe yes!

  15. That video…oh dear.

I’m heading to Goodwood tomorrow, got tickets for the saturday and sunday. Looks like it’s going to be a great weekend!

Mark sebbers was movable and at the end
Of his small flight was set in stone
Really though if it was set in Stone it would be
Way to heavy usexa lighter material Martin.
    LOL

  17. With all the exitement in this years Formula 1, all we can do is hope for even more.

Looks like Pirelli are not planning to take the safe way with tyres, looking for tyres options that need some thinking and juggling with tactics as well as tyre management skills from the drivers.

    Bring it on!
    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84895

  18. About CSI I think the image is from Kubica’s accident in the Canadian GP in 2007.

  19. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84912

Autosport reckons Valencia might be replace by another Spanish circuit in Majorca. It looks awful

    1. Are they serious or does Bernie likes all the awful track in the world?

    2. HounslowBusGarage
      1st July 2010, 22:07

I think that’s one of the worst track layouts I have ever seen. It’s a complete compromise between the drag strip front straight and trying to stuff 5 kms of track into a space the size of a Ikea car park – hence the backward and forwarding hairpins.
Any race at this track would make Bahrein seem chaotically exciting.
      And I bet it’s flat.

  20. So Kubica finally decided to go change that nose of his. But boy he got a completely new face. He became so sexy.

Ah! the nice old days were a guy could run into the track and trow his hat from joy.

  21. COTD kinda funny I pointed something very similar to that a while back when discussing improving the show. To let them play more with engines and alternative fuel sources and give them just broad guide lines instead.

  22. interesting post, pretty much covered it all for me, thanks. poker

  23. very nice article. thank for sharing entertainment
