Arpi_ is back in the lead of the F1 Fanatic Predictions Championship by a single point from Scunnyman after Jimfaekilie won the British Grand Prix round.
Three players tied with a best score of 19 points each but Jimfaekillie won the tie-breaker by coming closest to predicting the pole sitters’ time. See below for the full results.
Jimfaekillie wins a Lotus DVD courtesy of Duke Video. Carlos Santos claimed second place on the tie-breaker and wins a painting of race winner Mark Webber from Motorsport in Print.
Jimfaekillie moves up to seventh in the overall championship standings and Carlos Santos takes 16th. Daniil Gvardeitsev, who also scored 19 points this weekend, is now 30th.

The prizes
This year we’re giving away a pair of prizes every race weekend.

Grand prize: Two grandstands tickets to the 2011 British Grand Prix
The person who scores the most points in the 2010 F1 Fanatic Predictions Championship will win grandstand tickets to the 2011 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
This is the first time we’ve offered F1 race tickets as a prize at F1 Fanatic and I hope you all agree it’s a fitting reward for the F1 expert who can best predict who will be on top in 2010.
The grand prize winner will receive tickets to all three days of the 2011 British Grand Prix with reserved grandstand seating for the race.
Second place prize: An F1 painting of your choice
The second place finisher in the championship will win an F1 painting by Rob Ijbema.
You get to choose which F1 driver, present or past, will feature in the painting. Or you can pick one of the other motor racing paintings on Rob’s site Car-a-day.
Runners-up prizes: Autocourse 2010-2011
The ten players who finish in third to 12th positions in the championship will win a copy of the 2010-2011 edition of Autocourse.
The highly respected journal of Formula 1 and other major international four-wheeled racing series is published at the end of every season.
This year the publication marks its 60th anniversary edition.

How to enter
Entries will open in the week before every race. You have until the start of free practice three on Saturday to make your predictions.
You can post your predictions for the first race now below or wait until nearer the deadline. A reminder will be posted on the site after free practice two on Friday.
Each player may predict the pole sitter, the pole position lap time and the top five finishers in the race. See below for the rules in full.
Enter your pole position lap time prediction in the following format: MM:SS.ccc – e.g. for a lap of one minute, 25.386 seconds enter 01:25.386
Please try to pick an original and distinctive user name – something a bit more descriptive than just a first name and use the same name for every race you enter.
Competition terms and conditions
1. Maximum one entry per household.
2. The competition is not open to employees, friends or family of F1 Fanatic, Silverstone Circuit, Duke Video, Motorsport in Print, Car-a-Day or Icon Publishing Ltd.
3. Predictions will open up to one week before the start of final practice on the Saturday of a Grand Prix weekend and will be promoted on the front page of F1 Fanatic before closing prior to the start of final practice.
4. In each round players are invited to predict (a) who will be on pole position and (b) what the top five finishers will be (five different drivers).
5. Players accumulate points in each round as follows:
a. Correctly naming the pole sitter: 2 points
b. Correctly naming one/two/three/four/five driver/s who finish in the top five: 1/2/3/5/8 points
c. Correctly predicting where one/two/three/four/five driver/s finish: 2/6/14/24/40 points
6. Whoever scores the most points over the 19 races from round one (Bahrain) to 19 (Abu Dhabi) wins the grand prize.
7. In the event of a tie on points the winner will be determined by who came closest to predicting the pole position time correctly. If that fails to produce a winner the editor will choose a means of deciding who has won.
8. Predictions must be entered using the form below. If you have trouble submitting your entry via the form please email competition@f1fanatic.co.uk
9. Once a prediction has been made it cannot be altered.
10. In the event of a dispute the editor’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
11. No cash alternative is offered for any of the prizes.
12. Grand Prix tickets: Children must be accompanied by an adult. Accommodation and transport to the venue not included. Event date TBC.
13. Players who have won prizes will be notified by email within seven days of each Grand Prix. Lotus DVDs and F1 paintings will be despatched within 28 days of that email being sent. I made some amateur statistics trying to answer one crucial question concerning the f1fanatic predictions championship: Based soley on the times of the second free practice session (FP2), can someone predict the grid? I discarded the first five races (cars still improving and weather conditions). What I was looking for was how much a driver is able to improve from FP2 to qualifying. The numbers represent the difference between FP2 and qualifying in seconds. I displayed only times, average (Ave) and Standard Deviation (Dev) from the drivers that managed to obtain the first five grid positions on these races.

The standard deviation shows that Alonso and Webber are the most constant drivers (0.2 s). It seems that they succeed obtaining a good setup already in the FP2. The most erratic drivers are Massa and Hamilton (0.6 s). Their performances have shown a weak correlation between FP2 and qualifying. On the other hand, the analysis of these data using only average times, shows that Hamilton, Webber and Kubica improve almost 2 seconds between FP2 and qualifying. Therefore, or they are hidding their true performance in FP2 or, like me, only start really working when there is none whatsoever time left.
My conclusions: 1) FP2 times for Alonso and Webber are good indications for a grid prediction. 2) Don´t disregard Hamilton, Webber and Kubica as candidates to the first positions of the grid, because they usually have a great improvement from FP2 to qualifying.
My recommendations: In your next prediction, you might completely disregard this post. Besides the fact I collected miserable points this time, this post is, at best, just a fanatic talking.

Yeah, I have been trying to look at free practice (1 and 2) for my predictions and indeed it has barely any indication for qualifying or race results at all.

I wouldn´t dare to correlate the FP2 and race results, unless I have, beyond data about karma, also the temperature of the Titicaca lake and the wind speed in the Mojave desert ;-). As I said, I was looking for correlations between FP2 and the grid. Like you I also guessed right 4 drivers in the 5 first grid positions (web, vet, alo and ham), and also end up getting only 4 points. But, if the drivers manage to go through the first corner without incidents/acidents, I think the grid is still the best guessing. BTW, the only time I got a decent amount of points in the predictions championship was in the chinese grand prix, because I knew there was a big chance of rainning during the race and, therefore, I completly ignored the possible grid and bet on drivers with good skills in this kind of race.

I had trouble on Friday, but as per his advice and the rules, I sent my predictions though the contact form.
Will my score be updated? I hope so, because I believe I had Webber 1st, then Hamilton, I had Vettel on pole, and predicted him not to finish!…. So I will be sad if they don’t count.

The problem some people had with the predictions form lasted for a couple of hours on Friday. While it wasn’t working there was a bold link telling people to submit predictions by email and hundreds of predictions were received that way (which is why it’s taken longer than usual to get the results up as they had to be processed manually). The problem was fixed on Friday evening and everyone was able to enter predictions as normal after then. This was also pointed out in the Saturday round-up before the deadline passed.

I should be 61st instead of 120th.
I sent my prediction via the contact form and I was too late to send it the normal way when the problem was fixed.
If i finish within 7 points of the leader at the end i’ll be moaning more than a certain spaniard.

I f Keith DOES want to re check the predictions for Silverstone I am ok with that even if it may mean i lose points and drop down that list. I am having fun predicting pole and the race, then watching to see if i am right and cursing when the drivers don’t do what i want lol.
So for all those who had problems and think they deserve points or more points, then i think Keith should redo or cancel this round.

I agree with that. Maybe the “stage neutralization” – like in rally – would be the best and the easiest option.

Finally some serious points (11 points brought me up to 180th in the championship). I did put in some positions without going for emotions and it worked.
I will still have to bring some improvements (looking at cloudioff’s analyses as well) for the next races and make up places to get to the front, but i have found the right development path.

Well, it looks as though quite a few people posted their predictions when the form page wasn’t working correctly.
I’m sure that not everyone would have noticed that the page was rolling around and presenting itself in the ‘clean’ state again, rather than taking the visitor to the complete listing of predictions.
I’m also sure most people would have closed their browsers and thought no more about it. But if you cross-check the people who say they selected Vettel for pole, Webber for the win or whatever etc, with the actual list of predictions – none of their names appear.
Keith, maybe you should just scrap that round – even though I scored four points and moved up the table due to lots of other contestants no-scoring.

everyone in the top 30 scored points. just because a very small percentage of people submitted and didn’t realise that the page was down, doesn’t mean the whole round should be scrapped.
That would be a dispointment to the whole contest since 95+ percent of people did get an entry in.

Jose not everyone is talking about scrapping this round is part of the 5% who didn’t get their prediction in, but there are many people who are saying they didn’t get points they deserve for predicting pole and getting low numbers for getting many of the top 5 finishers.
It’s a case of Keith doing the long job of checking each and every person predictions (which can be done in the next 2 weeks) or scrapping the whole thing for this round.
Do you think it is fair forthose who did a really good job of predicting this time round to not get what they deserve?

This round there were less than 500 predictions (484) when usually it’s around 800 and since it’s Silverstone I’d expect an even higher number than average.
So we’re talking about 300 people or almost 40% of the total who didn’t get a prediction in.
It’s impossible to restore all that. I myself entered the prediction on the form and I got no warning that it didn’t work.
If there was a text somewhere on the (massive) page that predictions didn’t work then why not disable the page altogether?
It doesn’t matter in the end since it’s just a few points on a whole season and since this is a “web site sport”, you can expect technical difficulties :)
Seriously though, Keith, I have some web builders in my company. If you need help getting this form fixed please let me know (for no charge obviously). All these problems with the predictions are costing you too much time and it’s spoiling the fun for us a little.

I am also having the same problem as a lot of people here. I was pretty sure to collect some nice points.

When I first submitted my prediction there seemed to be a problem, as the screen just refreshed, and it did not show the predictions table as it usually does. I then used the contact form, and sent my prediction this way.

I agree with Jose here. Scrapping the round would be very unfair on the people who scored big points. Scoring high in one round really makes a difference to your standing, usually putting you up in amongst the top contenders, so to take that away from this weeks winners would be very unfair.
The fairest thing would be for those who feel they have not been scored correctly to email Keith so he can check it against the entries received either by the usual method or by the contact form/email.
It’s the responsibility of those entering to make sure their prediction has gone through ok, by checking your name is up on the list when you submit. Keith made it clear this week there was a problem and that if your prediction doesn’t go through then to send it in by other means.
As for me, it wouldn’t affect my ranking either way, I just feel it would be unfair for those who got high scores this time round.

I encountered the form problem on Friday afternoon, but I was more successful in the evening and got my prediction in. However, I only got one point because I was stupid enough to predict:

I can only offer my apologies to those of you who thought they had successfully posted predictions on Friday while the form wasn’t working correctly.
I took every reasonable step to ensure people were aware of the problem which affected several people who made predictions. Once the problem was identified a clear warning was put on the site along with instructions for how to submit predictions manually. About 150 people did this, and many also re-submitted their predictions after the fault was fixed. It was also announced on Twitter and mentioned in the daily round-up.
The fault was fixed on Friday and will be re-checked ahead of the next round to safeguard against a repeat.
Once again, I’m very sorry to those of you who were affected by the problem and will work harder to prevent it happening again.

Just to be clear, of the people whose predictions were counted, they all have the correct points. There is no question of any miscalculation having happened.
Some people’s predictions weren’t received and therefore they received no points, as mentioned in my original comment on this thread.
There will be no changes to the scoring for this round, except perhaps in cases like Gilvan’s above.
