Arpi_ is back in the lead of the F1 Fanatic Predictions Championship by a single point from Scunnyman after Jimfaekilie won the British Grand Prix round.

Three players tied with a best score of 19 points each but Jimfaekillie won the tie-breaker by coming closest to predicting the pole sitters’ time. See below for the full results.

Jimfaekillie wins a Lotus DVD courtesy of Duke Video. Carlos Santos claimed second place on the tie-breaker and wins a painting of race winner Mark Webber from Motorsport in Print.

Jimfaekillie moves up to seventh in the overall championship standings and Carlos Santos takes 16th. Daniil Gvardeitsev, who also scored 19 points this weekend, is now 30th.

  1. I made some amateur statistics trying to answer one crucial question concerning the f1fanatic predictions championship: Based soley on the times of the second free practice session (FP2), can someone predict the grid? I discarded the first five races (cars still improving and weather conditions). What I was looking for was how much a driver is able to improve from FP2 to qualifying. The numbers represent the difference between FP2 and qualifying in seconds. I displayed only times, average (Ave) and Standard Deviation (Dev) from the drivers that managed to obtain the first five grid positions on these races.
Driver Mon. Tur. Can. Eur. Bri. Ave Dev
    Alonso 1.113 1.528 1.208 1.200 1.3 0.2
    Webber 1.794 2.083 1.900 1.765 1.476 1.8 0.2
    Kubica 1.072 2.186 1.814 1.743 1.979 1.8 0.4
    Vettel 0.872 1.830 1.457 1.752 2.260 1.6 0.5
    Button 0.982 1.499 2.441 1.819 1.501 1.7 0.5
    Rosberg 0.469 1.962 1.080 1.023 1.541 1.2 0.5
    Hamilton 0.817 2.239 2.417 1.780 2.201 1.9 0.6
    Massa 0.837 2.538 1.713 1.820 0.927 1.6 0.6
The standard deviation shows that Alonso and Webber are the most constant drivers (0.2 s). It seems that they succeed obtaining a good setup already in the FP2. The most erratic drivers are Massa and Hamilton (0.6 s). Their performances have shown a weak correlation between FP2 and qualifying. On the other hand, the analysis of these data using only average times, shows that Hamilton, Webber and Kubica improve almost 2 seconds between FP2 and qualifying. Therefore, or they are hidding their true performance in FP2 or, like me, only start really working when there is none whatsoever time left.
My conclusions: 1) FP2 times for Alonso and Webber are good indications for a grid prediction. 2) Don´t disregard Hamilton, Webber and Kubica as candidates to the first positions of the grid, because they usually have a great improvement from FP2 to qualifying.
My recommendations: In your next prediction, you might completely disregard this post. Besides the fact I collected miserable points this time, this post is, at best, just a fanatic talking.

    1. Still, A+ for effort though!

    2. OMG, that’s so geeky… I LOVE IT!! :)

    3. Yeah, I have been trying to look at free practice (1 and 2) for my predictions and indeed it has barely any indication for qualifying or race results at all.

Good that you have proven this in an empirical sense :)

    4. My experience shows that you have to take karma into account. I predicted the first four on the grid correctly and I got only 4 points! :O

      1. I wouldn´t dare to correlate the FP2 and race results, unless I have, beyond data about karma, also the temperature of the Titicaca lake and the wind speed in the Mojave desert ;-). As I said, I was looking for correlations between FP2 and the grid. Like you I also guessed right 4 drivers in the 5 first grid positions (web, vet, alo and ham), and also end up getting only 4 points. But, if the drivers manage to go through the first corner without incidents/acidents, I think the grid is still the best guessing. BTW, the only time I got a decent amount of points in the predictions championship was in the chinese grand prix, because I knew there was a big chance of rainning during the race and, therefore, I completly ignored the possible grid and bet on drivers with good skills in this kind of race.

      2. I predicted pole and top 5 on the grid correctly and I got only 5 points :(

    5. Does Paul the octopus do F1 predictions too?

No way thats 2 rounds now i’ve entered points scoring predictions in the championship and when the results come on the tuesday it says I scored 0!!!!

      booo!!!! (still good tho)

  2. 0?! How did I score 0? I predicted Webber to win and also that Hamilton and Button finished in the top 5…

    1. Me too. There were a few technichal problems on Friday though, perhaps that was why. Oh well, a few DNF’s through the course of the season were inevitable!

    2. Same as me I think, although I didn’t take a copy.

I thought I had Webber for pole and the win, plus Hamilton in the top 5, yet I only scored 4 points!

      Now I doubt myself!

For Germany I will definitely take a screen dump to be on the safe(r) side.

      1. Same here, can’t be helped!

You can always go back to earlier posts and check – go here https://www.racefans.net/2010/07/09/make-your-british-grand-prix-predictions-to-win-f1-prizes/

          1. Shows how bad my memory was – Vettel was on pole not Webber! D’oh!

          2. I had trouble on Friday, but as per his advice and the rules, I sent my predictions though the contact form.

Will my score be updated? I hope so, because I believe I had Webber 1st, then Hamilton, I had Vettel on pole, and predicted him not to finish!…. So I will be sad if they don’t count.

            quote:
If you’re concerned your prediction has not been received please send it in via the contact form as described in the rules:

            https://www.racefans.net/credits-and-contacts/contact-f1fanatic/

Please do not post predictions in the comments.

It also mentions that in the rules.

I hope I’m in the clear because this is the first race since the first one where I’ve actually done well!

    3. Yeah I got 0 points too. I’m pretty sure I had Webber, Hamilton and possibly even Button in the top 5.

I’m unable to lookup the predictions though. Only the Bahrain one is showing for me.

      1. Oh, I don’t even show on the predictions at all?!?!

  3. I scored 0 too. i think i should have scored 8 or 9 with webber and hamilton in correct places and rosberg in top 5 . thanks !

  4. Also scored 0 – would ahve scored 4 points. Keith, the competition cannot be fair if peopl are not able to enter their predictions. I’ve got a screenshot to prove I submitted mine with a timestamp, even did it twice.

Is this going to be addressed?

  5. I’m 24th despite predicting the winner correctly 5 times =)

  6. Is there any way to see the list of predictions again?

  7. The same with me. Scored 0 but submitted WEB on 1st and HAM on 2nd. I even have a screen shot of my prediction.

The other 3 I predicted were ALO VET and KUB. Can’t believe all the trouble they got during the race :)

  8. Looks like Arpi and myself are having a good tussle for first place so far, it’s fun.

  9. Dasman and DK – can you get in touch with me via the contact form so I can arrange to have a look at your screenshots. Thanks.

    Contact form

The problem some people had with the predictions form lasted for a couple of hours on Friday. While it wasn’t working there was a bold link telling people to submit predictions by email and hundreds of predictions were received that way (which is why it’s taken longer than usual to get the results up as they had to be processed manually). The problem was fixed on Friday evening and everyone was able to enter predictions as normal after then. This was also pointed out in the Saturday round-up before the deadline passed.

    1. I used the contact form on Friday afternoon. Still surprised I only scored 4 points!

      Leaves on the line?

      1. Since I can’t be sure now (memory not what is was), 4 points is better than 0!

        1. I submitted mine after the problem had been fixed on Friday evening. Strange…

          1. Yeah I think I did too. I used the entry form on the site and it seemed to work ok at the time.

I got 0 points when i should have got 7. I had vet on pole, web and ham in top 5 and but fourth.

      I should be 61st instead of 120th.

I sent my prediction via the contact form and I was too late to send it the normal way when the problem was fixed.

If i finish within 7 points of the leader at the end i’ll be moaning more than a certain spaniard.

        14th July 2010, 17:05

Maybe this round should be discounted for the Championship Keith?

        1. Your calling for a non championship event Mr. Schumacher?

Keith will have to publicly make a fool of you, and order you to pay all entrants damages! ;-)

    3. (as pointed out at the results page) I used the form but it didn’t work

  10. I expected better, but Vettel and Kubica messed up my predictions little bit, still I’m not giving up on podium finish ;)

  11. Rob Gallagher
    14th July 2010, 15:04

0 points…I predicted Vettel for pole, isn’t pole worth any points?

  12. Me too, i didn’t get my points for webber’s victory.

  13. I am gutted I didn’t do any predictions for 7 races, still 80th isn’t too bad

  14. How funny, jimfaekillie (Kilmarnock?) takes the lead and the reason I couldn’t enter was because I was in Kilmarnock visiting relatives last week and had no Internet :L

  15. does seem like a lot of people did not get points for predicting pole. not complaining Keith but maybe there needs to be a recount and recheck everyone this week?

  16. Vettel completely screwed my race!

Still down in 65th, but that’s only 12 points off of a prize!

  17. HounslowBusGarage
    14th July 2010, 15:53

I’ve just rocketed up into 715th place! How good is that?

Actually. It’s pretty pathetic, isn’t it?

  18. I got 0 too but I’m sure I got some of the top 5. My memories pretty bad but sure I got some. I put it in late Friday and didn’t have any troubles at all. Drat.

  19. Hey! I precicted Mark to win, button to come 4th, and Hamilton to finish 3rd and i have 0 points????

    Playing as “Fernando Morcillo”

  20. I got zero points too and im sure picked vettel for pole position

  21. I f Keith DOES want to re check the predictions for Silverstone I am ok with that even if it may mean i lose points and drop down that list. I am having fun predicting pole and the race, then watching to see if i am right and cursing when the drivers don’t do what i want lol.

So for all those who had problems and think they deserve points or more points, then i think Keith should redo or cancel this round.

    What do you others think?

    1. I agree with that. Maybe the “stage neutralization” – like in rally – would be the best and the easiest option.
But whatever will be the end of the story we should accept/respect that.

      1. I think Keith can now either cancel the round as a result of technical difficulties from Friday or leave it as it is due to the fact that he can’t investigate all “my predictions didn’t come through” claims. Ultimately I will support any decision Keith makes.

    2. HounslowBusGarage
      14th July 2010, 21:44

Cancel. Otherwise it’s just too complicated.
But I have to say I sympathise with the idea that the stupid drivers don’t do what you want them to do!
      Me too.

Damn, it seems my prediction didn’t go through. I thought at the time that something had gone wrong but had to rush off so didn’t bother trying again.

    Oh well.

  23. Hey Keith,

It seems my prediction didnt go through. I had pole : 01:29.876 (Vettel)

    Pos. 1: Vettel
    Pos. 2: Hamilton
    Pos. 3: Webber
    Pos. 4: Alonso
    Pos. 5: Rosberg

I dont know why it didnt go through. I would guess because i was at work where there are all sorts of filters on my internet access. I also thought this was why the list of predictions did not show up after i made my picks (but i read in other comments some others had that problem as well, so i ignored it).

Anyway, I wouldnt have won (I dont think) but if you could find the time to add my prediction it would be greatly appreciated. If you cant i wont be too bothered.

    Thanks,

    Wout

  24. Finally some serious points (11 points brought me up to 180th in the championship). I did put in some positions without going for emotions and it worked.

I will still have to bring some improvements (looking at cloudioff’s analyses as well) for the next races and make up places to get to the front, but i have found the right development path.

  25. 11 points and up 165 places.Very happy about that!

    1. 11pts for me too.
Pole, Ham result, Button result, put Webber as 3rd Doh.

  26. HounslowBusGarage
    14th July 2010, 21:40

Well, it looks as though quite a few people posted their predictions when the form page wasn’t working correctly.
I’m sure that not everyone would have noticed that the page was rolling around and presenting itself in the ‘clean’ state again, rather than taking the visitor to the complete listing of predictions.
I’m also sure most people would have closed their browsers and thought no more about it. But if you cross-check the people who say they selected Vettel for pole, Webber for the win or whatever etc, with the actual list of predictions – none of their names appear.
Keith, maybe you should just scrap that round – even though I scored four points and moved up the table due to lots of other contestants no-scoring.

    1. everyone in the top 30 scored points. just because a very small percentage of people submitted and didn’t realise that the page was down, doesn’t mean the whole round should be scrapped.

That would be a dispointment to the whole contest since 95+ percent of people did get an entry in.

      1. Jose not everyone is talking about scrapping this round is part of the 5% who didn’t get their prediction in, but there are many people who are saying they didn’t get points they deserve for predicting pole and getting low numbers for getting many of the top 5 finishers.

It’s a case of Keith doing the long job of checking each and every person predictions (which can be done in the next 2 weeks) or scrapping the whole thing for this round.

Do you think it is fair forthose who did a really good job of predicting this time round to not get what they deserve?

      2. This round there were less than 500 predictions (484) when usually it’s around 800 and since it’s Silverstone I’d expect an even higher number than average.

So we’re talking about 300 people or almost 40% of the total who didn’t get a prediction in.

It’s impossible to restore all that. I myself entered the prediction on the form and I got no warning that it didn’t work.

If there was a text somewhere on the (massive) page that predictions didn’t work then why not disable the page altogether?

It doesn’t matter in the end since it’s just a few points on a whole season and since this is a “web site sport”, you can expect technical difficulties :)

Seriously though, Keith, I have some web builders in my company. If you need help getting this form fixed please let me know (for no charge obviously). All these problems with the predictions are costing you too much time and it’s spoiling the fun for us a little.

    2. im not sure, but i think i got the full list of predictions, along with my name…

  27. Hello Keith,

I am also having the same problem as a lot of people here. I was pretty sure to collect some nice points.
    I had
    pole: Vettel
time: 01.30.489 (cant remember exactly but it was under 1.30.500s)
    Race:
    1.Webber
    2.Hamilton
    3.Vettel
    4.Alonso
    5.Button
When I first submitted my prediction there seemed to be a problem, as the screen just refreshed, and it did not show the predictions table as it usually does. I then used the contact form, and sent my prediction this way.
I eould appreciate if you had a look on the forms, user name is IguessF1.

    1. The problem here was I didn’t have your user name on the prediction. I’ve added it now.

  28. I realised there was a fault with the main form, so I used the contact form instead.

So my prediction must’ve got through as I scored 4, disappointing though as that is.

  29. I agree with Jose here. Scrapping the round would be very unfair on the people who scored big points. Scoring high in one round really makes a difference to your standing, usually putting you up in amongst the top contenders, so to take that away from this weeks winners would be very unfair.

The fairest thing would be for those who feel they have not been scored correctly to email Keith so he can check it against the entries received either by the usual method or by the contact form/email.

It’s the responsibility of those entering to make sure their prediction has gone through ok, by checking your name is up on the list when you submit. Keith made it clear this week there was a problem and that if your prediction doesn’t go through then to send it in by other means.

As for me, it wouldn’t affect my ranking either way, I just feel it would be unfair for those who got high scores this time round.

  30. I encountered the form problem on Friday afternoon, but I was more successful in the evening and got my prediction in. However, I only got one point because I was stupid enough to predict:
    Pole: WEB
    1: ALO, 2: VET, 3: HAM, 4: KUB, 5:MAS

But what I ACTUALLY meant to say was:
    Pole: VET
    1: WEB, 2: HAM, 3: ROS, 4: BUT, 5: BAR

Can I have my 50 points please?

Pretty please with cherries on top??

    No???

This is a disgrace – I call shenanigans!
    ;-)

  31. I can only offer my apologies to those of you who thought they had successfully posted predictions on Friday while the form wasn’t working correctly.

I took every reasonable step to ensure people were aware of the problem which affected several people who made predictions. Once the problem was identified a clear warning was put on the site along with instructions for how to submit predictions manually. About 150 people did this, and many also re-submitted their predictions after the fault was fixed. It was also announced on Twitter and mentioned in the daily round-up.

The fault was fixed on Friday and will be re-checked ahead of the next round to safeguard against a repeat.

Once again, I’m very sorry to those of you who were affected by the problem and will work harder to prevent it happening again.

    1. what about those people who think they got the wrong points this round Keith?

    2. HounslowBusGarage
      15th July 2010, 16:51

No apologies necessary, Keith. This is a free competition on a free site with the intention of showing skill and having a bit of fun.

      1. i agree Hounslow

    3. Hi Keith,

I’ve submitted my prediction using “contact form” as you suggested in the comments. Could you please try to find it?
      It was Pole: Vettel
      1: Vettel
      2: Kubica
      3: Rosberg
      4: Alonso
      5: Schumaher

      1. Afraid I haven’t had anything from your user name or email address – unless you used a different email address when you submitted the contact form?

        1. so what is happening with this round predictions Keith? are you going to check all those who say they didn’t get the right points or scrap the round or just say the round stands as it is?

          1. Just to be clear, of the people whose predictions were counted, they all have the correct points. There is no question of any miscalculation having happened.

Some people’s predictions weren’t received and therefore they received no points, as mentioned in my original comment on this thread.

There will be no changes to the scoring for this round, except perhaps in cases like Gilvan’s above.

          2. On behalf of everyone i say thankyou Keith

  32. Also recived zero points :(
