Which driver did the best job during the Italian Grand Prix weekend?

See below for my pick of the best drivers in the Italian Grand Prix.

Review each driver’s race weekend below and vote for who you thought was the most impressive driver.

For your consideration

Here are some of the drivers who impressed me during the Italian Grand Prix weekend:

Fernando Alonso – Great lap to clinch pole position in a tight session. Lost the lead at the start but kept the pressure on Button and took it back after a quick pit stop.

Jenson Button – Opting to run a set-up which left him 14kph slower than Alonso on the straights was a risky choice. But he came impressively close to pulling it off after a great start and unblinking performance under pressure.

Sebastian Vettel – His race looked to be over on lap 19 but nursing his soft tyres for 51 laps allowed him to vault back into fourth place.

Mark Webber – Out-qualified Vettel despite losing time in two practice sessions with car problems. Lost ground at the start but made passes on Michael Schumacher, Robert Kubica and Nico Hulkenberg to take sixth.

Nico Hulkenberg – Looked faster than Rubens Barrichello all weekend. Out-qualified his team mate and beat him home. Only blot was a few mistakes at the chicanes precipitated by a dodgy brake pedal – Webber might have thought he deserved a penalty but race control didn’t agree.

    1. Wow first Vote! And for Vettel, pretty unusually for a british blog :-)

      1. For me it’s between Alonso, Button and Vettel.

Alonso drove a solid race and took the victory.

Button drove well with damage and an unheard of setup for Monza.

Vettel went from looking like his title fight was over to saving it with a brilliant 4th place.

A little bit of bias makes me want to say Vettel.

        1. Alonso and Button both did a great job! Great to see a fight for almost every single lap!
Vettel was quick when it mattered. But Webber was the only man to pass three drivers on the track.

        2. If he had actually managed a pass, then definitely Vettel.

But instead it confirms what everyone already thinks about him: He can’t pass.

      2. speaking of British blog how can hamilton have MORE VOTES than massa? hamilton was out on lap 1 and massa finished on the podium!

        1. lol that’s really interesting.

    2. I was going to say Hulkenberg would warrant a comedy vote with his chicane shenanigans, but you’ve gone and put him in the list of contenders!

      1. You want comedy….two people have voted for Yamamoto and di Grassi currently has -1% of the votes

        1. Button should get a vote for comedy, too – his quote about the Spa incident was gold: “I’m not sure how you t-bone someone when you’re both going the same direction…”

      2. Yeah, I can’t vote for anyone who can’t keep their car in between the white lines.

    3. I think I’d have to give it to Alonso. While Button kept him at bay ’til the stop, I think Alonso’s pace afterwards proved he was simply biding his time.

      1. I think this poll is 50/50 Button/Alonso. Alonso gets it for the flawless inlap/outlap that won him the first place back. Too close to call, really.

      2. I went Alonso as well, Button drove flawlessly to keep him behind, but in the end, Alonso was pushing his car to the limit (hence a few mistakes), and that’s what won him the race.

      3. I went for Button, it was a risky choice but he made it work as far as it went.

Sure the pitstop might not have been optimal in timing and speed. Ferrari did a great job with the pitstop and Alonso did the laps to nail him with his greater speed.

        1. I went for Button too. It was close between him and Alonso.

It was this quote that made me choose Button: “Jenson drove superb,” Alonso said. “He made not a single mistake for the whole lap in every lap. He did a fantastic drive.”

    4. Who voted for Hamilton???

      1. it was a pretty good first corner…

      2. It has to be Hamilton. His drive against Jake Humphrey was sensational.

        1. Yes but the poll doesn’t have the right Hamilton in it for that!!

      3. I should have voted for Hamilton. His fantastic drive in this race has just opened up the WDC again. Definitely the driver of the day for me!

        1. I’m a huge Hamilton fan… And even I can’t understand the 30 votes he got.

I guess it is for the blessed tight championship his simple yet decisive drive gave us.

          1. Lew is the best driver in every race. Half of a lap, 60 laps… doesn’t matter.

      4. Definitely Hamilton

    5. Marc Mattingshaw
      13th September 2010, 23:05

      The HULK for me

    6. Jenson without a doubt, Did anyone else notice how far Alonso pushed Button over the white line that Charlie Whiting said no pushing over. I suppose it was 2/3 of the wheels over the dashed pit exit line. Not technically a line I suppose :-)

      1. I agree. I think Jenson was the best driver of the weekend. His setup choice worked well for him, and he should congratulated for thinking through an alternative strategy.

I wanted to vote for Webber for his passes, but he wouldn’t have needed to make those passes if he hadn’t of lost so many places off the start. Having said that I suppose it could be argued that Webber was playing it safe off the line and through the first chicane and therefore that demonstrates that he was the best driver because he was sensible enough to know when to attack, and when to play it safe.

As for Alonso, even though he won, I didn’t think his drive was particularly impressive. He had the fastest car, and a big advantage in straight line speed over Button, but he wasn’t able to regain the lead until Button pitted. Qualifying demonstrated that Alonso was able to set a faster lap time then Button, and in my mind Alonso should of been able to close up the gap to Button, and then fly straight past on him on the straights. Maybe that was the plan if the pit stop strategy didn’t work the way it did.

I always find it a little bit disappointing when races are won and lost purely on the speed of the pit stop, and in lap / out lap times. I prefer to see the results of races based on legitimate racing and / or innovative strategy choices. I think the rule requiring each car to change tyres during the race should go as should the banning on refuelling. With no specified requirements on tyre changes, and refuelling, teams would be free to choose whether they pit at all, which would mix the strategies up, and it make more interesting.

        1. I voted Button being an Alonso fan!

          He drove really well.

Alonso couldn’t get passed Button even though he was faster because Ferrari we running low downforce. When you’re stuck behind a car in all that turbulence, grip is not as readily available even on a normal setup.

You could see Alonso sliding a few times when he got up close to Button. Plus Button’s setup allowed him to brake later and he could get on the gas out of corners faster.

So, its probably unfair to say that the 14 kph straightline speed advantange was the only factor.

Jenson drove well all weekend. I would still like to think that Alonso would have passed him even if Jenson stayed ahead after the stops.

Good weekend of racing in my opinion. I would have been a lot better if Hamilton was up there fighting Alonso and Button, that would have been intense!

      2. i thought the ‘charlie whiting line’ was the one as you exit parabolica and enter the start / finish straight. cutting that shortens the track. where button was pushed over the line would lengthen it by a few cm.

        1. I thought He was refering to the white line that runs from pit entry pass the pit wall down to the pit exit, to avoid any Sch/Bar driving, I caught the last ten laps on the F1 Fanatic live blog an there were cries of ” Alonso over the white line ” (All tounge in cheek) when He weaved past the finish line. But you have to admit that was a very aggressive, but fair start.

          1. Doh, Were talking about the same line but I thought the line carried on till past pit exit.

    7. Sorry, Has to vote for Hamilton, but someone else decided to join me? :P

    8. Alonso hands down. He put together brilliant drives in qualifying and the race. Aside from a momentary lapse of judgment at the start, he was absolutely perfect. I cannot imagine the concentration it takes to pull that off. Hats off to Button for a job well done, but Alonso takes the prize for keeping his head in it 100% from (just after the) start to finish.

Silly Lewis – I know how I feel when I completely screw something up! Sucks.

    9. Its so funny, before i entered this page i thought: i bet a lot of people are going to vote Hamilton.

Its already up to five, you guys are hilarious !

    10. Button and Alonso were both flawless all weekend, but my vote goes with Jenson for yet another bold but well judged call on strategy.

Honourable mentions for Vettel, Webber, Hulkenberg and Rosberg, who I’m surprised has only one vote!

    11. That was a weekend of a Champion by Button, brave but ultimately clever and correct decision made by him and his side of the garage to go with the high down force / F- duct package, excellent quali followed by a sublime & ballsy start / first corner and a faultless drive in what was quite obviously a slower car than the Ferraris – with the intense pressure of Alonso up his backside for much of the race – If that drive doesn’t persuade the few doubters left that Button is a worthy World Champion I don’t know what will, the guy just doesn’t seem to make mistakes during a race that loses him position – in fact I’m having trouble remembering his last one that did …. anyone ?

      1. Yeah – Spa 2010, he let Vettel beside him.

        1. Only Vettel made the error, driving as if he was insane.

          1. Good point, You never see Button bury it in the tyre wall.

    12. Button, this ig going down as a massive underapreciated drive, the man was essentially undone by his pit crew, an team, if they left him out this race was his. Driving with a car on which the main downforce generating componant was compromised.

Massive drive in the inferior drive, certainly did better then Alo alo in that race.

      1. I thought McLarens were the faster car? I think people forget that out of the top 3 cars on the track, Ferrari have been the slowest overall in 2010.

If Alonso was not where he was, I doubt Massa would have had the pace to beat Button.

        1. Jack, not sure that’s correct. Ferrari have been pretty quick for most ofthe season and were certainly the fastest car in Italy. They have looked slow because (in my humble opinion) Alonso has made too many mistakes and Massa doesn’t seem up for it often enough.

McLaren have looked faster mostly because until this weekend they seemed to keep their heads when all about them were losing theirs.

This weekend they lost a race win because of the strategy call and because Jenson’s car simply wasn’t as quick as Alonsos.

As for driver of the weekend, for me Jenson – driving a compromised car (both setup choice and damage) to within a whisker of taking the win off a car which should (based on straight line speed if nothing else) have sailed past him.

Don’t get me wrong, Alonso did well, but I always think driver of the weekend should go to the guy who got the best possible result out of his car.

          Still, it’s all opinions, isn’t it?! :-)

          1. Fair points.

Seeing as its much easier (to drive close to the limit) with a higher downforce car, in my opinion Buttons setup was nothing impressive.

Higher downforce means you have more consistent braking patterns, better rear grip through the corners (less drifting) and overall the drive is way more consistent.

I give the guys who went with the low down-force setups much more respect, as it really is a pain (trust me).

    13. Button and Alonso were both excellent all weekend but my vote has to go to Button. He nailed the start and had the balls to run that “barn door” rear wing around Monza.

I don’t know how why people are voting for Hamilton, he was useless.

      1. I think Alonso was the best, but Button was really close.

How come Hamilton has more votes than Massa???

        1. Over a third of the viewers of this site are British, and I think its pretty safe to say most of them support Lewis. Out of that lot, you are bound to have some die-hard fans.

          1. Actually it’s less than a third.

          2. Sure Jack, but even as a “die-hard” fan of Massa, I know he wasn’t as good as Alonso this weekend (either) – and I dislike Alonso! To say Hamilton was the driver of the weekend when all he did was qualify bad (with the wrongly set-up car) and then crash out of the race in the 4:th corner, well, that’s just silly, even Hamilton knows he was far, far from the driver of the weekend.

    14. button and alonso were so close for me. i voted alonso simply because he won. i was really impressed by webber’s overtakes, especially the schumacher one. but he really shouldn’t have needed to do them given his start should have been much better.

    15. Given that it’s a vote for the driver of the WEEKEND, and not just the race, there are arguments for all the top drivers. Button and Alonso were both fantastic, but I voted for Vettel. He was ridiculously fast in all the practice sessions in a car that wasn’t supposed to be competitive at Monza. He qualified poorly, but then made up for it in the race with a risky strategy after his brake problem, that brought him home with more points than his team mate and kept him in the hunt for the championship.

      1. Being fastest in practice doesnt mean anything. Do you know what fuel were Ferrari and MClaren running in practice.
THe best judgement can be infered from quali and race.

    16. jenson button for keeping alonso behind him for so long, at monza. Imagine the pressure he must have felt knowing his car was slower. every lap was a qualy lap from him today.

a mclaren driver leading at monza with a faster ferrari breathing down your neck is the toughest of challenges.

    17. Button had high downforce/drag/turbulence, at least in the curves, yet Alonso managed to stay close for most of the race, with a low downforce setup (must have been hairy in Parabolica, remember Massa in FP ?)
Both were under high pressure, but made no mistakes (maybe one debatable each, BUT in quali, ALO with DLR)
Both also behaved as gentlemen at post-race interview.

I gave it to Alonso because he got the win, but I wish I could vote twice !

      1. ok, ALO did a definite mistake by pushing BUT at the start… but how is a driver supposed to see how far over a line he is pushing the other car ? And what if there are 3-4+ cars ? Who is going to get punished ?

      2. @jahbaba, That’s exactly my point of view. The battle at the front was an excellent display of just how great drivers Alonso and Button are. I voted Button because, despite Whitmarsh’s dismissal, I think he must have been suffering from a loss of downforce; and yet he drove a flawless race. Alonso’s car was for all intents and purposes 100% at all times. And, like you said, they were perfect gentlemen post-race. But it was very very very close. I too wish I could vote for both.

    18. I suppose that most of Hamilton’s votes are ironic. As a Ferrari fan, I thought of voting him just for fun, but finally decided for Alonso.

    19. I has to be Alonso. Pole position, victory and fastest lap. He really needed it after Spa. Perfect week end.

    20. Button by a gnat’s wossname from Alonso – because he made a mega start, didn’t put a wheel wrong under pressure, particularly through the first lap – and I’m voting for the driver, not his car or pit crew.

      1. ‘I’m voting for the driver, not his car or pit crew.’

        Thumbs up to this.

      2. +1 to this. Ultimately it was the pitstop that decided who got the win, because there was absolutely nothing in it between the drivers. Actually it’s kind of amazing how these guys can race for an hour and still come out of the pits side by side. It’s like olympic synchronized… racing.

    21. Alonso made 3 mistakes during the race – poor start, crashing into the back of Button (lucky he didnt ruin both their races, unfortunately I think he hurt buttons race more than his own) and nearly losing it all near the end passing a back marker.

He was never going to get past Button even with the faster car. The pit stop was the only chance he had.

Button actually was flawless all weekend, especially during the race under the pressure.

    22. Webber’s poor start means that he doesn’t get my vote, however he was brilliant in qualifying and then proceeded to pull out three beautiful passes (becoming something of an overtaking specialist, now? Massa @ Rivage was an amazing move) to claim a decent sixth position. Likewise, Vettel’s underwhelming qualifying means he doesn’t get my vote either, but he was super impressive during the race, putting in 52 fast laps on the rather friendly soft tyre. Fourth was probablt the best result RBR could have hoped for.
Button deserves the driver of the weekend, but then again, Alonso was awesome as well. Button’s 36 laps of gritty, brake-locking defence made for great viewing, soaking in the pressure of a slightly faster Alonso, and only missed on what would have been an incredible victory after the team blinked first at the round of pit-stops. Then again, Alonso was untouchable in qualifying, that first lap would have been faultless – thanks BBC for showing me practically none of it – then put in the storming in-lap when he needed to.

    23. Why would anyone vote for Hamilton? He didn’t complete 1 lap & was to blame for his DNF.

    24. There are some oddities in the results calculations. :)

      Felipe Massa (2%, 7 Votes)
      Sebastien Buemi (0%, 0 Votes)
Lucas di Grassi (2%, 0 Votes)

      1. Wow. If enough of us keep not voting for di Grassi, he might still pull this one out.

I also noticed that Alguersuari’s bar is thicker than … ok, that sounded bad, but it’s thicker than that of the other guys with 0%. Sounds like the poll software doesn’t handle edge-cases very well – which you would think would be a fairly high priority for poll software. :P

        1. Jarno’s bar is the same size as Jaime’s. Perhaps if your name starts with J, that entitles you to extra width? And now I am going to leave this alone, as there is just no way to comment on this topic without sounding rude !

          1. Well, that demonstrates size is not important….

    25. Charles Carroll
      14th September 2010, 1:22

I went with Alonso. It was a solid weekend without any of his usual complaining about not receiving the “Moses” treatment.

    26. Would have been Webber but for his start. Dropping to 6th on the first chicane, then 9th on the second. Valencia and Spa all over again.
Has to be Fernando though. Jenson was good, but Alonso was better. I only caught the end of the stop so I could be wrong, but did Ferrari deliberately run a slow stop for Massa to keep him out of the way?

    27. Button. He kept Alonso at bay until the pitstops despite having a slower car which was also damaged. Pretty impressive I’d say, especially on such a fast and open circuit.

      1. Its a fast circuit, but open… not..
        its a very narrow circuit

    28. Where is Rosberg? He throttled Schumacher pretty much all weekend, more emphatically than usual, ran a strong race and split the RedBulls. He edges Alonso, who would have to share the accolade with this pit crew, and Martin Whitmars, anyway.

I don’t see any reason for giving Button the laurels over those two. For the Nth time, there was no brave gamble. That’s a nice story line but it doesnt fit the facts.

WHis set up was exactly as fast as the one Hamilton ultimately chose, all weekend. Hamilton ran too close behind Webber in Q3, and stuffed up a couple corners, that’s it. The fact that Button creeped down the straights in his choice may have cost him the lead, because the part of the track where he made his time came after the pit exit, another small detail he overlooked in making his supposed brilliant gamble. And he miscalculated that his tire approach would out-manage the tires compared to the opposition.

      1. Agree about Rosberg but disagree about Button. His choise in my opinion was the most brilliant, as well as original choise for Monza. Lewis made mistakes in qualifying because his set-up was too unpredictable in corners even for Lewis. He said on saturday that his setup choise was a mistake compared to Button’s. And Button’s setup worked very well in the race, despite Alonso’s speed advantage. Mclaren made mistakes in the race with bringing Button in too early, and with his pitstop being 0.8 sec slower he had no chance but ni blame for him there. So button is a big contender for the drive of the race even though I voted for Rosberg.

      2. What Bridgestone are doing supplying an option tyre that can last the whole flipping race is beyond me – too conservative for my liking and does nothing for the racing.

    29. I voted for Hamilton, he only made one mistake all race !

      1. A very big one indeed.

      2. Button, Vettel, Alonso and Massa didn’t make any mistakes all race, and kept their cars running for 53 laps.

        1. Well, Alonso did make a few mistakes (slow start, he did hit Button and his small off in the last lap) although they did not ruin his race in the end.

      3. he he he,,,, nice one

      4. “I voted for Hamilton, he only made one mistake all race !”

        Comment of the Day!!!!! :)

    30. Webber as he seems to be the busiest driver of the race & for all those overtaking moves.

    31. In the end I went for Alonso, but it was a close call with Button, who drove flawlessly all weekend, and Webber who drove fantastically after the first corner, but muffed the start.

    32. Jenson Button. He blasted out of his grid box with the side of a barn strapped to the back of his car, and he still beat Alonso through the chicane. Button had a stellar first stint. I’m not sure if anyone else noticed the live timing on screen, but seeing the gap to Alonso fluctuate was nerve wracking. I’m pretty sure I’ve got hypertension now!

Overall, this was a fantastic race. Everyone that made it to Monza paid for the whole seat, but they only needed the edge.

      1. That new live timing (non-sector based) at the bottom of the screen was great, but nervewracking eh?

        1. I think he means the live timing in f1’s official site. It’s awesome, it gives you all the sector times. I like to keep it open in one window and f1fanatic’s live blog in another while I watch the race. Indeed, it was thrilling to watch those times.

          1. Yes, I use the F1 live timing applet too on my lappy. But I noticed the new timing graphics at the bottom of the screen during the race, which were not just sector based but more fine-grained – they updated every few seconds.

          2. No, the timing on the actual live feed was constantly updating instead of just at each sector. It was killing me! I was watching the SPEED feed in The States by the way.

    33. Apparently Jenson had some interference on his radio all the way up until his pit stop…

…there was some guy saying something about Fernando being faster than him….

      1. LOL nice one Adrian.
Good thing he did not follow orders, like Hakkinend did at the time when he pitted uncalled for.

Button for me. I can’t help feeling he would have run away with it had Alonso not punted his rear end. But even with his shattered diffuser, he was like the duracell bunny, just went on and on unquestioningly. He didn’t make a big mistake all weekend.

Alonso was also stunning, never backed down. The only blip that means he can’t win driver of the day over Button was that trip across the chicane at the end.

    35. Ha! 4 people voted for Sakon Yamamoto! Brilliant!

    36. Eenie Meenie Miney Moe…….Mark Webber got my vote because he actually overtook a few cars.Apart from that, and a minor celebration on my part when Hammy crashed out,the race was rather boring.

    37. well, as outspoken a Button fan as i am, i’m happy that finally there is a race weekend this year where he firmly deserves all the praise he gets.

a brilliant drive, first to out-qualify Lewis (regardless of setup, that is no mean feat!) then to pip Alonso into the first corner. Makes you wonder if Button had not stopped at all, like Vettel, how long woudl Ferrari have held on before flinching and stopping themselves? I feel a bit like the McLaren boys let him down a tad on the stop, but let’s face it, 4.2s is hardly a slow stop, 3.4s just that little bit quicker for Alonso, and at the end of the day, getting into the Rettifilio about 0.8s ahead, you can see that a quicker stop may have helped him. Realistically though, letting him past was the best thing he could do, as we have all seen this year how crash hungry these cars can be; after the debacle that was Spa, i’m sure Button was more than happy with 2nd in a clearly slower car.

Above the racing and defending though, Button also has to take the crown as the best personality of the weekend, and maybe season as well, his attitude and reponse to all that has happened never fails to impress me, and i love how he is genuinely impressed with other people’s drives, and speaks very humbly about all the drivers as if they really were one big family like the old days. Alonso on the other hand is quite introversial in the press conferences, and his body language next to Massa is appalling. Notice how Button turned his 2nd place into a victory for all the drivers on the podium, aknowledging that this result has in fact re-ignited all three of their championship hopes not just his own, and with a smile on his face. Brilliant

      1. And to all intents and purposes still driving a car built around Hamilton – will be nice to see how he goes next year when maybe some of his preferences are considered for his car :)

      2. The extent of slowness can be made out from quali time.
Button was only .1 sec slower than Alonso in an empty car. So he was not that slower the way he is made out to be.

    38. Alonso had a stunning weekend.
Button and Massa were next with great weekends.
Web was good on the Saturday despite the lack of running where Seb pulled it out on the Sunday. That would be more useful to RBR if they just morphed into one driver :P

    39. best driver of the we: ALO

    40. It was Vettel, he got the RBR to 4th on a track where it probably shouldn’t have finished top 8.

    41. Poll’s not there for me, it just says ‘Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment’ I would have voted Alonso though.

      1. Poll is invisible, can’t vote. Alsonso has to get my vote (if I could). He was on fire this weekend. He put his head down and just performed. Pole and race winner, no tricks. Job done.

      2. Ditto. I would be voting for Alonso as well, once I get the option to.

        1. Wow, is this a anti-Alonso by the site? It seems all of you who wanted to vote for Alonso had problems voting.
Great mind reading SW used then ;-0

      3. Luckily, I voted before reading the comments. But i wanted to have anther look at the results, but they are gone!

      4. Apologies, slight glitch with the cache which made the poll disappear briefly. You should see it’s back now, if not hit Ctrl-F5 to refresh the page.

Just to be clear, the poll was not visible to all users regardless of voting intention during this time.

        1. I know, just joking after some of the heaten comments of last week.

          Thanks for fixing it.

        2. Thanks, works fine now. But I changed my vote to Button ;)

    42. Definetly Vettel for me. Getting from 8th to 4th right out of the blue considering technical problems? Just wow.

    43. Alonso was the best this weekend, but Liked also Vettel´s and Hulkenberg´s race.

I went for Buemi. He put that STR car where it didn’t belong, battling for the last point (and finishing 1sec adrift); somehow I am sure if he had gotten it, he would have been voted more.

    45. No one mentioned here the little battle between Alonso and Massa during the first two corners. Someone could even believe they were actually racing each other.

      1. You could tell Massa was really really trying hard to get into the second chicane first, as I am sure after Hockenheim he would have been allowed to hold the position, or have to take responsibility for letting Alonso through. I voted Alonso, Button was good, but Alonso was Pole Sitter, Fastest Lap and GP Winner

    46. Close to a tie between Button and Alonso for me, I had difficulty deciding – while both deserve it, I gave it to Alonso this time, he almost didn’t put a foot wrong during the weekend (maybe that 1st corner hit into back of Button, oh well). Button made a very interesting and bold strategy work very well, but in the end it wasn’t good enough.

    47. Webber’s overtakes merit a vote, that and his understanding that there’s a time to play safe and a time to be aggressive.
But Alonso had a perfect weekend and also showed his maturity knowing when to push and when to hold back, so he gets my vote.

    48. I say Alonso but i was tied between him and Button

I was never going to vote for Liuzzi but i think he had a really good race if Liuzzi could qualify in the top 10 i think he could do really well

      1. You’ve finally commented!
