Nine players tied in Predictions Championship

Predictions Championship

The incredibly close 2012 championship continues to make life difficult in the Predictions Championship.

Nine players tied with a highest score of just 11 points in the European Grand Prix.

This meant the pole position time tie-breaker had to be used to decide the winners and the margins were very fine indeed. Overall winner HoolyF1 was just five-thousandths of a second off predicting Sebastian Vettel’s pole position time correctly – only one other player (Staryeyed85) got closer.

Abreeden took second (0.084s off) and Aleanza third (0.102s away). Commiserations to the other six, particularly CarinaF1, who was only 0.162s off winning a prize.

HoolyF1 is our first winner of a 1973 Autocourse eBook. Abreeden and Alelanza win a Grand Prix Heroes video from Duke Video and an F1 poster from PJ Tierney respectively.

Bigginf1, Mirceapert, MZS16, Lidia53 and Zopyrion also tied for the top score.

The result gives Chrissylyn a three-point lead at the top of the standings over ButtonUp09 and Carpy3. But with the championship leader only on 75 points and a maximum of 600 still to be won, even players who haven’t joined in yet can get in the hunt for overall honours.

It seems most players took not of Vettel’s scorching fast sector times on his in-lap at the end of final practice and correctly picked him for pole – over 70% did so.

But Fernando Alonso was only the fifth-highest pick for victory, chosen by 7.2% of players. Vettel was favoured to win a third consecutive race at Valencia by 45.3%.

Here are the nine highest-scoring predictions for the last race:

  1. 3 points. I haven’t been out of single figures since Australia, yet I’m still less than a race away from taking the lead! What a mad season we have…

    1. I feel pretty much like that @lin1876, its been another 4 points for me now, I am a point behind you in the standings but still only 36 points from the leader in the standings!

  2. @Aleanza

Contact me here with your address and which in-stock A3 poster you’d like to have :)

    http://shop.pjtierney.net/contact

    1. Or @alelanza even, the tagger didn’t work.

    2. Awesome, will do, thanks!

  3. Happy with 10 points for predicting Vettel on pole, Raikkonen in 2nd and Hulkenberg in 5th.

    1. You are making strides in the championship battle with that kind of success!

  4. I remember by VET-VET-ALO-HAM-GRO-MSC was looking excellent on the 34th lap…

    1. 4 points for that. Lol. Never mind. Excellent race.

    2. @hey Similar story here. Let’s just blame Pirelli, FIA and Karthikeyan.

      1. @girts karthikeyan? Hw does he come into this?

        1. @malleshmagdum That was just a clumsy joke. I actually like Karthikeyan. In F1, backmarkers often get blamed when something goes wrong, for instance, one of the leading drivers has lost time behind some backmarker in race or qualifying. There are a lot of other examples like Vettel vs Karthikeyan after the Malaysian GP, Ferrari’s attacks towards the small teams or Webber’s inability to accept his fault after the spectacular collision with Kovalainen at Valencia in 2010.

          1. have been following Karthikeyan since 2005. I started following F1 bcz of KAR. Having won a race in every series he ever entered, He entered F1 on merit, but sadly never got a good car. Now, he is well past his prime

    3. I almost got lucky. i had vet on pole with grosjean winning the race (which he would have done) and vet 2nd, ham 3rd, webber 4th.
      i think

      1. @sato113 i had VET, GRO VET HAM ALO PER….barring Perez, I was in for a major haul until the Renault alternators gave way!

      2. @sato113 – if Vettel had remained in the race along with Grosjean Vettel would’ve won; his pace was untouchable

        1. @vettel1 yes perhaps but i think the renault was only slighlty less quick in free air (ie. not behind hamilton) and the lotus has better tyre deg. it would have been closer.

Only Vettel on pole this time. For a moment, I had put Webber on fourth but I changed it to Alonso…

  6. @keithcollantine 2012, not 2011. And I got 6 more valuable points – although Grosjean, Vettel and Hamilton cost me dearly on Sunday (not Saturday).

  7. I’m so rubbish at this…

  8. 7 points, not bad.
I picked Schumacher for 3rd place and it was looking quite difficult after quali, but in the end it was the right choice. I was close with Hulkenberg. I put him fourth :(

    1. @yobo01 I had initially put Hulk in 5th, but dropped him and put Perez. BAD DECISION!

  9. Man, I was looking good for 20+ points 2 laps before end. 4 drivers in top 5 and 3 in right place. And then Maldonado had his moment with Hamilton so all I got from the race were 4 points. Oh well, nobody is running away with the prediction championship this year anyway…

  10. *bangs head on table*

I had Vettel, Hamilton AND Grosjean listed to finish in the top 5.

    1. @joey-poey Bad luck that!

  11. 381st. Destroying the table there!

    Only 5 points behind @mattht though…

  12. How do i see how many points i have got?

    1. you go to the link to the “Updated Predictions Championship standings” (in the article above the table with the winners), there it’s easiest to use the search function to find your name in the list (some 2000 names!) @095cal

  13. My VET-RAI-GRO-HAM-ALO prediction looked pretty good until that safety car came along…

  14. This is by far my greatest moment as an F1 Fanatic member…. :)

    1. We have a winner. Congratulations @hoolyf1!

      1. Cheers :)

  15. 8 races and I haven’t even predicted the winner correctly once!

  16. My prediction for Vettel on pole was spot on, but that’s all I really got right. I went for Raikkonen, Vettel, Grosjean, Webber, Di Resta. So actually, not a bad prediction, and I can’t believe I got Webber right, as I thought that would not be possible after quali xD, and unfortunately I put the wrong Force India in 5th place :P. When I made the prediction, I was also considering having Raikkonen second, which would have given me more points too -_- – Ahh well, ifs, buts and maybes.

At least I gained about 100 odd places :P

    1. Seeing the practice results, HUL was always gonna be faster in Valencia. Wonder how u got tht wrong….But an increase of 100 spots is awesome man!

    2. @jamiefranklinf1 Seeing the practice results, HUL was always gonna be faster in Valencia. Wonder how u got tht wrong….But an increase of 100 spots is awesome man!

      1. @Malleshmagdum – Well, considering that the race was going to be hotter, and Di Resta has been a little more consistent in race performances, combined with the fact that Di Resta did well in Bahrain gave me the push to put him in that spot.

But yeah, I’m happy the 100 spot increase, I just need another 251 places to move up ;)

  17. its always getting very good for me in the first half of the race but in second part it all get messed up and i end up with very few points

  18. I’m so ******. I forgot to make a prediction, i remembered 2 minutes before qualifying and rand out of time to post. Would have got at least a couple of points :(

  19. So does this mean i won something? please advise :)

    1. Yes it does mean that @abreeden

Abreeden and Alelanza win a Grand Prix Heroes video from Duke Video and an F1 poster from PJ Tierney respectively.

@keithcollantine will contact you to ask what Duke Grand Prix Heroes DVDs you want and to send the adress for posting it.

    2. @abreeden You were sent the email before this went up – check your inbox (and, failing that, spam folder!)

  20. Sorry. Just read article better. How do I claim prizes?
    Great season!

    1. I don’t know either. Haven’t gotten an email or anything….

      1. Don’t worry guys, Keith will send you a mail shortly. Good luck on winning to the both of you.

      2. @hoolyf1 You were also sent an email yesterday.

        1. @keithcollantine I have just found out all my F1 fanatic emails go to an account that I rarely use so I found that email? Is there any way I can have such emails sent to a different email address

          1. @hoolyf1 I think you can do that by going to My Account -> Settings and changing ‘Account Email’ and saving the changes.

By the way, congratulations on the victory!

          2. @girts. Thanks a million. Will make life much easier

  21. 6 points, not bad for this race. This unpredictable season seems to suit me, much closer to the top than I was last season.

  22. Entered for the first time. 7 points. Not great, but not bad. Look out leaders, I’m gunning for ya! LOL.

    1. When you look at the championship standings, 7 points actually is a very good result! We haven’t seen scores go over 20 since China this year!

  23. For about one lap I had the perfect prediction & then it all fell apart. Usually when that happens there is much shouting at the telly, but this time around the race was so good I just didn’t even care that my predictions went to heck in a handbasket. Still, 7 points not so bad, and I have vaulted from 258th place to 98th.

  24. I reckon 6 points for all that happened isn’t too bad…

@keithcollantine Try to get Alonso predicting in the pool “I am happy if I make 50 points in the next three races” he declared just before Monaco FP1….. He made 15+10+25=50.

He might raise the bar :-)

  26. Wow, ok that this season is far from normal, but still I can’t believe I’m actually tied for top spot with these lousy 11 pts… and beware, next time I’ll come up with an even more sophisticated pole time prediction method! :)
