Mark Webber reckoned he should have finished fifth – and he wasn’t the only driver to lose out on a three-stop strategy.

The lap chart shows how badly the three-stop strategies worked for the likes of Jenson Button and Mark Webber. They sacrificed race position on the track for a performance advantage they simply weren’t able to reap the benefit of.

In the case of McLaren, they must have expected Button would come out of the pits behind Bruno Senna and would need to pass the Williams. Button’s stop was the third-quickest of the race, so it’s not as though a slightly delay cost him one position more than they would have expected.

Button said his first pit stop came because his tyres had lost too much performance, but the other two were brought forward for strategic reasons. “I don’t know why we pitted so early each time,” he said.

“I don’t think we looked too good when it cane to strategy,” he added.

Button was at least able to recover a place from Senna through their final pit stops, but Mark Webber didn’t even have that consolation.

“Fifth place was there,” he said after the race, and the lap chart makes it clear why he thought so.

Had Webber not made his third pit stop – and he confirmed the team had considered it – he would have needed to complete a 30-lap stint on his final set of softs. That would have been a stretch, but Kimi Raikkonen did 25 laps in the middle of the race with a heavier fuel load.

It’s very easy to criticise strategies with the benefit of hindsight. But given Red Bull had already observed Button’s struggles by this point, and that Webber sacrificed a place to the only driver in front of him in the championship – Fernando Alonso – this was a particularly surprising call.

Hungarian Grand Prix race chart

Sebastian Vettel was another driver to three-stop, though he did not lose a place by doing so. He came very close, however – had his pit stop not been the fastest of the race he might not have made it out in front of Alonso.

As it was, he had to defend from the Ferrari driver who made a serious effort at taking the place at turn two.

After that Vettel tore into the gap between him and Romain Grosjean, but arrived on the tail of the Lotus one lap too late to attempt a pass.

It’s very easy to criticise strategies with the benefit of hindsight. But given Red Bull had already observed Button’s struggles by this point, and that Webber sacrificed a place to the only driver in front of him in the championship – Fernando Alonso – this was a particularly surprising call.
It was, though on Autosport I read that Webber had problems with his diff, which Horner said increased rear-wheel tyre degradation, so they needed to stop anyway. Still, that’s not showing up on the lap chart, as Alonso hadn’t gained on Webber in the 10 or so laps that Webber was ahead of Alonso.

  @adriammorse, I guess the diff made the diff, but as I pointed out last week they always seem to call Webber into the pits early leaving him short on tyre life at race end, they may have been covering Alonso but that was clearly stupid as Alonso started the race on the opposite tyre strategy making his softs last as long as Webbers mediums, clearly Alonsos mediums were going to last longer than Webbers softs at race end.

  @adrianmorse in any case, surely hanging on ahead of Alonso (thus compromising his race, if Webber indeed ran into tyre problems) seems a looooot better than pitting and coming up behind Senna.
  I was surprised they tried a 3 stopper. And the result of the race was an obvious conclusion: a seriously bad mistake.

    I’m guessing that Redbull really thought that Webbers car would end up being much faster than those infront and he’d be able to get past. However that seems like a poor decision, not only in hindsight but based on past performance too. Seen Webber getting stuck in traffic lots of time because the Redbull just doesn’t have enough straight line speed should have suggested don’t try. That Button couldn’t get past Senna should have suggested don’t try. That there were so few passes at all this race should have said don’t try.
    It was bad strategy and it hurt him (and Vettel) in the championship.

Bonkers race chart.
Really shows that overtaking is very hard at this track – lots of examples of faster cars stuck behind the slower.
Kimi & Lewis, Bruno & Webber, Glock and the HRTS, Schumacher & Kovalainen, Perez & Ricciardo

  most of the overtaking done in the pit… they should done something to this track to make it more interesting just like many other did.

RBR seemed to the the diff issue and potential failure would have contributed to tyre wear but it did look like Webber could maybe hold off Alonso and take 5th… that was all that mattered to Webber,surely? But maybe that would have seen him challenge Vettel for 4th… not what they wanted.

  It’s bitterly disappointing to see Webber let down by poor Red Bull strategy yet again, especially after such a good start. I’m not sure if there is any truth to the conspiracy theories, but sometimes I feel that I wouldn’t be surprised, particularly with the dodgy Dr Helmut Marko lurking in the background.
  I guess the optimist in me has to hope that Horner told the truth, and the diff problem forced the seemingly poor tyre strategy, particularly in light of Webber’s commitment to Red Bull for 2013.

I believe that Webber’s third stop was only brought about because Vettel was stopping for a new set of softs. What?? .. you say?
Well it goes like this .. Vettel had used up his tires trying to reel in Grosjean .. he was running wide on exits everywhere and went 2 wheels off a couple of times onto the grass. But if Vettel takes the gamble of another stop he figures he could possibly podium.
The only problem with that is if he stops he has to pass Webber to get back to Grosjean. Call Webber in and problem solved. Webber had been running a tire conservation race the whole time and was seemingly well prepared to go to the finish without stopping.
