It’s been happening ever since 1999.
Seriously though, looking at how the teams were in Australia. I can’t believe it. Ferrari have definitely been the biggest winners and Mclaren the biggest losers.

It was a very disappointing race for McLaren. With the pace that Ferrari have now and the inconsistancy of Hamilton’s driving I think Ferrari may have snatched 2nd position from under McLaren’s noses as they were focusing on beating Red Bull (an unlikely proposition for anyone now).

Not since 2009 it hasn’t. The last time Ferrari finished the WCC ahead of McLaren was 2008.

This. If anyone’s, Ferrari grabbing second in the WCC is Felipe’s doing. If I’m not mistaken, he’s the second best point scorer in the last 5 GPs after Vettel, with 58 points.

Too bad the only time Mclaren beats Ferrari is when there’s another quicker team out there. What happened from 1999 – 2004? or 2006-2008? That’s why they haven’t won a constructors championship in 14 years.
It’s quite amusing/funny that every time Mclaren do build a quick car, they screw it up. Mclaren are completely incapable of actually capitalizing on opportunities. There was 2003, 2005, 2007, 2010 and now 2012.
This season has been Mclaren’s to lose and they have done it, spectacularly.

@tony031r you’re right, after the teams came back from the holidays Vettel has amassed the most the points, with 93, followed by Massa with 56 and, oddly enough, Button with 55. Alonso is only the sixth, with 45 points.

Alonso did reasonable damage limitation. But he needs to outpace Vettel which is everybody knows. Ferrari resurgence again!
Also 2nd place for WCC is very piercing! Red Bull surely will win this though.

Reason why I think it’s entirely possible to overhaul Red Bull’s pace is the fact that no one could see someone taking a fight to McLaren when they had the fastest car at absolutely every type of a track, for 5 races straight, and then suddenly, after Singapore, they are nowhere! I mean, I personally don’t get it, but it’s happening.
Only constant of this season is that Alonso has the pace for the podium in pretty much every race this year.

It is and that’s exactly how I see it. The problem is that it’s unlikely anyone will be able to challenge them in India or Abu Dhabi. The Tilke tracks are known to be Red Bull’s personal backyards.
Ferrari will most probably make the most out of the US GP and Brazil. The problem is, it all might be too little too late.

Shame that Toro Rosso’s nice double points-finish means nothing; with 21 points they would be a few places up in the standings during any other season, but now there’s still almost a 40 point gap to Williams.

I know it’s a bit stupid, but if Perez was with McLaren, Hamilton with Mercedes, and Schumacher with Sauber, this is how the Constructor’s would look:

You can’t really make that as a comparison, since McLaren obviously have had a quicker car than Mercedes. Still, if Hamilton & Merecedes have a car on par with that of McLaren’s this year they can surely challenge for the WDC, unlike the pairing of Hamilton & McLaren are now.

Alonso said yesterday that Ferrari will ship some updates to India.
I don’t know about Red Bull and of course by now we know Ferrari updates are 50-50 to work or not due to their buggy wind tunnel, but whatever… That’s the best one could hope for. If Red Bull will not get quicker either with or without updates and Ferrari will get it right with theirs, Alonso could beat Vettel for 1-2 races.
In any case, I think today Massa had the pace to challenge Red Bull towards the end. Alonso obviously had something wrong with his set-up – he might have adjusted something to counter the understeer Rosberg and Co. reported of on the grid to Brundle.
So there was not a big difference between the Alonso and Vettel. Little things mattered. It might swing in Alonso’s favour in India and in the USA.

What’s interesting is that McLaren, who started the season with the quickest car, are in danger (remote, I know) of losing 3rd place to Lotus.
Futhermore if Grosjean didn’t crash so much, there is a distinct possibility they would be coming 3rd in the Constructors championship.

It doesn’t look like Raikkonen will be rewarded for his consistency with regards to the drivers championship, owing to Vettel’s recent domination ( @eggry :P ) but they might be able to nick a place from McLaren in the constructors if their run of bad luck continues. Problem is that Grosjean can’t really push TOO much for that it seems.
