The lap chart reveals how rapid Sebastian Vettel’s return to the front of the pack was after his collision with Bruno Senna at the start of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Having fallen to last place he gained at least two positions on each of the next seven laps, putting him sixth by lap eight. He was aided by pit stops for some drivers including Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen and Mark Webber.

With Fernando Alonso looking on course for a podium finish for much of the race, Vettel needed to get back into the points. Alonso was in position to win the championship on two different occasions during the race.

He moved into championship-winning position when he passed Webber and Felipe Massa for third on lap three. But on lap six he went off at the first corner allowing Nico Hulkenberg into third and putting Vettel back in position to claim the title.

There was a brief moment later in the race when Alonso had the title in his grasp. Lewis Hamilton’s retirement moved him back up to third on lap 55, while Vettel was recovering from a slow extra pit stop due to a radio glitch.

At this moment Alonso had the combination of positions he needed to win the title, but lost it when Vettel passed Kamui Kobayashi for ninth the next time by. Although Massa later let Alonso through into second, by this time Vettel was up to seventh and the Red Bull driver eventually claimed sixth to secure the title by three points.

Marussia lost their grip on the lucrative tenth place in the constructors’ championship to Caterham after Timo Glock’s race was ruined by Jean-Eric Vergne.

Glock was running in the 12th place the team needed in front of both Caterhams when he was hit by Vergne following the first safety car period. It brought back memories of Glock’s retirement in Korea two years ago at the hands of another Toro Rosso driver – Sebastien Buemi – which also cost the team (then Virgin) a strong result.

Glock’s demise led to the battle for 12th place being conducted between his team mate Charles Pic – who will join Caterham next year – and Vitaly Petrov. With six laps to go, Petrov overtook Pic and gave Caterham the result they needed.

Inevitably this proved questions over whether Pic took a fall to benefit his future team. The pair were close on lap times at this stage but Pic’s lack of KERS probably made the difference in this battle.

  1. It’s interesting to look back at how Petrov got to that important 11th-place finish. Glock actually got ahead of both Caterhams during the first pit stops and was still in front as Vergne hit him at the restart after the safety car. Kovalainen lost around 15 seconds in his second pit stop. Finally, Petrov spun on lap 46 and thus lost a place to Pic at that moment.

We’ll never know if Pic had defended more fiercely against Petrov on lap 55 if the latter didn’t represent his future employer that most likely gained several million pounds because of this pass. But Caterham fully deserved the 10th place in the championship even if yesterday wasn’t their best day in the office.

    1. @girts, well spotted .
I wasn’t aware about all this happening in the back and assume the most of the people wasn’t either…… it was kind of a second smaller championship that was decided there.

  2. Νοw that I see this graphic I see that ΜSC also had a fantastic race.

    1. Yea it’s amazing what a couple safety cars can do for an average drive

      1. Yes like a couple of safety cars helped an average driver in Abu Dhabi. Oh no!!!! It was Sebastian Vettel!!!

      2. Only difference being that there were two SC to help Sebastian in Abu Dhabi while Michael took advantage of one in think?? (The one in the end didnt help)
Also Sebastian was probably in the fastest car in Abu Dhabi and MSC in a dog of a mercedes, 6th fastest car at best……..

        1. * i think

  3. if somebody choose to see only Vettel, Alonso, Button,Hamilton and Hulkenberg in the race chart the following is apparent:
    1) About the 20 first laps of the race when the track was damp-wet Vettel was the fastest man on track although his damaged floor and necessity of overtaking.
    2) After the safety car ,when everybody were on slick tyres and the track was drying out Hamilton was the quickest and Button-Hulkenberg were close on par behind him. Alonso was i little slower and Vettel a lot slower than Alonso.
    3) In the closing stage of the race and specially the last 10 laps when everybody was again with intermediates Vettel was again the fastest of all.

    conclusion:
Although Ferrari had wished for a wet race it looks like the RB of Vettel was the quickest car in these conditions and if we didn’t had that middle dry part (30~55 lap) probably he would ended up even higher than 6th , maybe even in front of Alonso.

    2nd remark
Webbers pace in that middle part of the race was also equal slow to Vettel , meaning that the pace of the latter maybe was more due to the set up and less due to the damaged floor he had.
On the other hand, during almost the whole middle part (30~52lap) Vettel was close behind Kobayashi unable to overtake him due to the low top speed of the RB meaning his pace was dictated by the latter.

  4. About the overtaking of Vettel on Schumacher in lap 64,
the chart shows us that from lap 59 onward Vettels pace was 1-2 sec/lap quicker than Schumachers.
In 4 laps Vettel glossed a gap of 6sec.
According to this, its clear that Vettel passing Michael was either way inevitable even without him stepping aside.

  5. Something other interesting to see is the position changes in the last pit stops between Vettel- Webber- Kobayashi.
Although Vettel was about 5sec in front of webber his double pit stops due to miscommunication lead to Webber coming in front of him. Seeing the position Webber finished (in front of hulk) means that if Vettel didn’t had to do this double pit stop would finish 4th.
On the other hand, Kobayashi who was in front of Vettel lost two places to the redbulls even with only one pit stop. Kobayashis pit stop was one of the worsts of the race even worser(+4s) than the last of Vettels and cost him at least one place. This pit stop of kobayashi was 17 sec slower that the first pit stop(10lap) of Vettel which was the fastest of the race.

Lastly if we look closely in Webbers & Kobayashis lines in laps 6-7 we can see that the the HIT of the latter to the former that resulted him to spin of the track costed Webber about 10sec and 12 places drop in position.
Somehow coincidentally the last disastrous pit stop of kobayashi gave justice to Webber.

  6. Well, Button and Hulk were certainly comfortable enough in the conditions!
