    1. I think most drivers were clearly on the limit the entire race

    2. For Hamilton it was day in which a number of things didn’t go right, and in hindsight it may have been better to stay out longer on the option tyre in the first stint. Just before he pitted, he set his best S2 time, and his inlap was faster than anyone else’s (99.71 vs 100 for Vettel, for instance), so his tyres hadn’t dropped off the cliff yet. Given that everyone, but especially Mercedes was struggling to get good lap times on the medium tyres (at the beginning of the race), it didn’t turn out well for him.

The nail in the coffin for Hamilton was that he got stuck behind his team mate. Now I’m not a huge fan of team orders, but in case your team mate is essentially a stop ahead, I think it’s better to get out of the way.

His pace in the final stint, on what I assume were scrubbed mediums, was pretty strong, although he didn’t have the pace of the Red Bulls and Lotuses today, so for the final result it would have mattered little. Perhaps with a perfect race (including a better start), he could have battled with Alonso for 4th.

      1. The drivers don’t make the call on pit-stops – them team strategists on the pit wall do. Eeven when the driver wants to come in, the pit wall has to agree first. It is not a case of diving in when you want to; the pit crew have to be ready, the tyres have to be ready, and it must be in sync with the strategy that has been worked out already.

    3. Bottas set 3rd fastest lap. Surprised by that.

      1. Me too. I would love to see him in a better car and team. Maybe he would be a good replacement for Massa.

    4. Last time when a Ferrari got the fastest lap of the race was in 2011 Hungary GP, it’s been quite some time for a frontrunner team.

    5. These days strategy (at least a couple of them) is calculated by computers hundreds of miles away from the track and the pit wall decides if they going to implement the calculated strategy in case something unexpected happens. And that is where the things go wrong. Drivers have a little say in it.
