Mark Webber set the fastest lap of the Hungarian Grand Prix when he rejoined the track on soft tyres in the closing stages of the race.

Webber was trying to catch Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel ahead of him. Vettel was stuck behind Raikkonen, who made his last pit stop 13 laps before the Red Bull driver.

But at this stage both Red Bull drivers were being given ‘fail’ instructions indicated they were managing car problems.

Race winner Lewis Hamilton set his fastest lap on the penultimate tour, indicating how much he was controlling his pace during the final stint as he lead grew to ten seconds.

  1. I have a personal, and perhaps slightly irrational liking for strategies where you stay out a bit longer, to come back and attack later in the race on fresher tyres, so I was disappointed to see Grosjean come in so early for his second stop. He had stayed out quite long (a bit too long probably, though it didn’t matter so much as Vettel was stuck behind Button) on his first set of tyres, which would give him strategic options later. He could have hung back from the Vettel-Button battle to attack Vettel later, or to stretch his second stint to make a two-stop strategy work. At least he would have been second behind Hamilton. Of course, he messed up later on his own, but his team’s strategy put him in traffic in the first place.

After the first stop, I thought Webber might challenge for the win, and also his second stint was strong, keeping in touch with Hamilton who was on fresher tyres then. However, his final two stints were too weak for some reason, and he didn’t get any sustained pace from the softs in his final stints. Similarly, Button also drove a very strong first stint, and he did a great job keeping Vettel behind, but in the second part of the race he faded like Webber.

Finally, Ricciardo did himself a favour on Saturday with another great qualifying, but the race was a lot less positive. Red Bull now have to choose between the guy who maximised his car on Sunday and finished second again, and the guy who fell back again and finished behind his team mate. It wasn’t all Daniel’s fault, as what were the team thinking putting him on a two-stop when he was struggling the way he was? Just look at the graph between Daniel and his team mate between laps 30 (when JEV stopped for the second time), and lap 38, when RIC made his final stop. Ricciardo lost about an entire pit stop worth of time in those 8 laps of trying to stretch the stint enough for a two-stop.

Could you guys also publish this data without in/out laps? The time scale obscures the interesting part (tenths of seconds). Thanks, love the site

  3. Really promising to see Maldonado up there with the ninth quickest lap. Also doesn’t bode well for Bottas that his fastest lap with 1.5 slower than his team mate. Great driving by Maldonado today – I would have loved to see his opening lap.

    1. @dot_com

You do realise that Bottas had way more fuel onboard on lap 41 (before his engine blew) than Maldonado had on lap 69, don’t you?

Here you can compare the Lap times of each driver…
Dizzy-A is right, Bottas WAS faster than Maldonado BEFORE his engine blew up.

  4. Can anyone help me find out which driver had the fastest speed in either kph or mph along the pit straight (1st DRS zone) at this weekends Hungary GP? I cannot find the info anywhere and have a bet I need to settle! Thanks, Rob

    1. @robbrooks Rosberg was fastest, 305.1kph. Then Hamilton, 304.9. For reference Raikkonen was 13th, 298.3, and Vettel 19th, 294.8. Sutil was slowest, 291.3.

      1. Brilliant – thanks for the swift response. Is there a link for me to prove this to my ever doubtful friends please?

          Hope it’s usefull.

  5. 2 Sebastian Vettel Red Bull-Renault 1’24.553 0.484 57
    3 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 1’24.647 0.578 69

This shows how well Merc managed their tyres. Lewis fastest lap was only a tenth slower 12 laps later. Of course, we wouldnt know what Vettel could have done if he had passed Kimi.
