Sebastian Vettel might have cost team mate Daniel Ricciardo a podium position by hesitating when he was told to let his team mate past in the middle of the race.

The data below indicate Ricciardo lost over four seconds while trying to find a way past his team mate from laps 22 to 25. Vettel initially resisted calls from Red Bull to let his team mate by, but said he relented when told they were on different strategies.

Ricciardo was 1.2 seconds behind Fernando Alonso after 56 laps. However due to an error the race result was based on the standings after 54 laps, when he was 3.5 seconds behind.

It’s far from certain Ricciardo would have been able to pass the Ferrari had he caught it, especially given the Red Bull’s poor straight-line speed.

And even if he had done, had it been on lap 55 or 56 he would have lost the place in the same way Kamui Kobayashi lost the 17th place he took off Bianchi on the last lap. Like in Melbourne, it would have been a case of Ricciardo finishing in the top three ‘on the track’, then being stripped of his podium finish afterwards.

  1. Lewis Hamilton lost a lot of time at the end of the first stint to ensure that he dictates the tire strategy. Very strong pace from the Mercs indeed.

  2. Mr win or lose

It seems that Ricciardo lost about 5 seconds behind Vettel, so that may well have cost him the podium.

    1. If it cost him five seconds trying to overtake Vettel, it would have cost him more than that trying to overtake Alonso. So it’s unlikely, especially considering the premature ending.

  3. Comparing Vettel and Ricciardo, it looks like Vettel initially matched Ricciardo on the option tyres, and then loosing out on the last two stints on the primes. Maybe Vettels car was more set up for qualifying (option tyres). In any case, Ricciardo did a great job once more.

    1. Vettel said the differences in setup were minimal.

  4. Would’ve, could’ve, should’ve of.

The problem with these types of scenarios is that it requires holding what Fernando (or other drivers, circumstances) does static. We don’t know if ALO was managing the gap to Ricciardo or not. He wasn’t going to catch Rosberg, and with reliability of engines, and needing to extend the life of engine components as much as possible, essential at this point in the season, it’s more than likely ALO wasn’t maxing out what his car could do. ALO is a master of taking care of his car. If RIC gets close to him, ALO may have found another .5 to 1 sec a lap and kept RIC at bay.

But it makes for good reading/speculation and more ammo for folks already inclined not to like VET, etc.

  5. I’m missing Webber’s helmet. From the photo above it’s hard to tell RIC and VET apart!

  6. DR was pulling away at almost 1s per lap on the primes from Vettel. Amazing.
