Kimi Raikkonen set the fastest lap of the Monaco Grand Prix thanks to a late change to super-soft tyres following his incident with Kevin Magnussen.

The battle between the two Mercedes drivers had fizzled out as Lewis Hamilton dropped back after getting some dirt in his eye. That gave Daniel Ricciardo an incentive to push, and he set the second-fastest lap as he tried to catch and pass Hamilton.

One driver whose lap times tailed off quickly at the end of the race was Nico Hulkenberg. He ran 51 laps on the super-soft tyres after changing to them when the Safety Car was out on lap 26. He ended the race with Jenson Button and Felipe Massa breathing down his neck, but held onto his fifth place.

  1. Great drive by Ric after a poor start. He seems to look after the tyres and speeds up later in the race. A good trend.

  2. That is really impressive by riccardo and redbull. fastest lap on softs which has done more than 35 laps.

  3. What about Chilton with 7th fastest lap? Great drive

    1. Can’t even keep it off other cars under safety car, what a waste of F1 seat.

  4. It is now meaningless to mention fastest laps because anybody can do that. Bring back refuel and no lapped car overtakes under SC (also meaningless) please..

    1. Fastest laps are no less relevant to overall performance now than they were in the refuelling era. In fact they’re likely to be more significant without refuelling, as drivers are more likely to be on a similar fuel load at all points during the race.

      1. I think fastest laps are indeed less relevant now.

These days, the only representative fastest lap can be one that has been set in the final laps of a race, when a car is light on fuel. Fastest laps set way before the end of the race are inherently irrelevant because they carry too much fuel.
Now, I would say the end of races typically have less action. Positions tend to be relatively secure, or more secure than mid-race, drivers are starting to count points and be careful not to throw too much away. Not always ofcourse, but this is more true for the end of a race than it is mid-race.

Now compare with the refueling era. First of all, all drivers (unless zero-stopping) were light on fuel multiple times per race. Which means fastest laps could be set throughout. Couple this to the fact mid-race drivers will generally be more racy than at the end, and I logically arrive at the conclusion that fastest laps now mean less than before.

drivers are more likely to be on a similar fuel load at all points during the race

True, but since the potential for setting a fastest lap is only really there at the end, we have the same situation as back when refueling was allowed: at the end of the race everybody was on a similar fuel load as well.

        1. in the refuelling era no one ever ‘zero-stopped’ – the only instance i can recall was mika salo at monaco in 1997 and that race was shortened to 62 laps.

  5. So, fastest lap is within 1.9 seconds of last years fastest lap. Hmmm, not too bad for overall speed. Monaco is not exactly a great track for these new cars with less downforce and the tyres are harder this year than last year. So, not bad.

It will be interesting to see if they can get within a second of last years fastest lap at Monza. That’s a track that clearly favors this years Formula the best and they’ll have another 3 months of developing the new cars and they’re making good progress. Will be interesting. I’d say that by mid way through next year, we’ll see lap times back on par with 2013.

The interesting thing will be to see if they truly push the new tech going forward. There are some new developments in SiC for the electronics (the inverters…which take up a great deal of space and cooling needs) and progress in battery/supercaps that could allow them to reduce the size, weight and cooling requirements for these systems by over 50% each. They could start to focus on getting the cars more aerodynamically clean with less air for cooling, lighter and letting the drivers gain a few kilos back again. I bet a couple of them would love to eat a cheeseburger right about now :)

  6. Interesting to see the Merc boys were faster on their new softs, than the last laps on old supersofts. Even without the stops during the SC, Hamilton would have a change by putting a few banker laps and pitting later than Rosberg. And would have never allowed Lewis for an undercut.

    1. Hamilton would NOT have a CHANCE to overtake Nico by pitting later.

  7. where are the pit to car radio transcripts?
