Valtteri Bottas, Williams, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, 2014The margins between making it into the next round of qualifying and being eliminated were incredibly fine in Canada. That meant every aspect of setting a time became ultra-critical.

This was particularly true when it came to tyre preparation, which was an area of concern for several drivers as the team radio transcript below shows. Daniel Ricciardo and Sergio Perez were among those who felt they didn’t get the lap time they could have done because they failed to prepare their tyres well enough on their out-laps.

Other drivers had more basic problems, such as Pastor Maldonado who was struck by a technical fault once again in qualifying.

Nico Rosberg’s immediate reaction to claiming another pole position was not broadcast. However several other drivers were clearly pleased with their performances – including Jean-Eric Vergne, who reached Q3 at the track where he also impressed last year.

Here’s what the drivers had to say on the radios during qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Phase Time From To Message
Q1 15:25 Angel Baena Marcus Ericsson BB offset six.
Q1 15:19 Andrew Murdoch Felipe Massa OK, you’ve got Maldonado four seconds ahead on an out-lap, and then Hulkenberg six seconds behind also on an out-lap.
Q1 15:10 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas So we need to try and get past Ericsson – we can see that you’re trying.
Q1 15:00 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg So straight out. Track is clear. For reference, wind direction has changed slightly from P3. It’s now a crosswind on the back straight. Just need to learn the gears.
Q1 12:39 Jenson Button Dave Robson I’ve got smoke coming out of the front-right brake pad.
Q1 Dave Robson Jenson Button OK Jenson, just need to learn seventh and eighth. Everything looks OK, and Yellow-G3. Yellow-G3.
Q1 11:45 Marco Schupbach Adrian Sutil Pedal-12, SOC-10. Could be that the track is a little slower right now. Maximise throttle, maximise charging. Behind you is Kimi, should be in phase. Maybe is attempting another lap, I’ll keep you up to date. Keep those fronts on temp like we discussed. The rears are OK.
Q1 11:03 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton So Lewis, you may be able to push for two laps, so think about that. Cancel the ‘magic’ and strat-5.
Q1 9:20 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg So Nico, please give us a radio check. [No response] And Nico, give us a radio check please. Give us a radio check. [Still no response] So Nico, not sure if you can hear us, we can’t hear you. So go strat-5, strat 5.
Q1 7:40 Marco Schupbach Adrian Sutil Confirm lap and confirm front wing Adrian.
Q1 Adrian Sutil Marco Schupbach It’s a bit oversteery.
Q1 Marco Schupbach Adrian Sutil OK, copy that. So we go minus two.
Q1 Adrian Sutil Marco Schupbach And the traction’s quite low. Front locking is same.
Q1 Marco Schupbach Adrian Sutil OK, understood. Front wing will also help with traction. So we go minus two. Rosberg is three seconds behind and behind him, another three to Alonso. And Adrian, we’re thinking three laps, is that OK?
Q1 Adrian Sutil Marco Schupbach Yes that’s OK.
Q1 Marco Schupbach Adrian Sutil OK, understood. Box, box. Rosberg I think slowed down.
Q1 6:27 Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso Track seems to be slow for everybody.
Q1 5:10 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie Yeah it’s still pretty similar to the morning. Still trying to fight it a bit, wonder if I should change. Front took a while to warm up.
Q1 3:35 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie Car’s moving around quite a bit in braking.
Q1 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo OK, understood.
Q1 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie Seems to be darting about a bit when I hit the brake.
Q1 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo Understood.
Q1 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie So I’ve got time for one more, do I?
Q1 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo We have got time.
Q1 1:45 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Vettel is in P13
OK Sebastian we’re not going again.
Q1 0:40 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Perez had a spin and is currently behind you. So we think we’re going to be alright.
Q1 0:25 Pastor Maldonado Mark Slade Maldonado pulls off the circuit
Some problem with the engine.
Q1 Mark Slade Pastor Maldonado OK, scenario two, please.
Q1 Mark Slade Pastor Maldonado Stop the car, Pastor. Stop the car.
Q1 0:16 Marco Matassa Daniil Kvyat Ericsson crashes at turn nine and the session is stopped.
Save tyres, red flag. Save tyres, red flag. Box.
Q1 Gary Gannon Max Chilton Red flag, Max, red flag. Come straight in, pull up and we’ll get the tyres wrapped.
Q1 Tim Wright Kamui Kobayashi Car is safe. OK Kamui, Maldonado, 18.3, P17. Chilton, 18.3. Then Bianchi, 18.3. Then yourself 19.3 and Ericsson 19.8. Can I have your feedback please on warm-up and balance?
Q1 Kamui Kobayashi Tim Wright I think it’s hard to get the grip from the fronts so I think that front warm-up could be a little bit better. I think basically, the car is front-limited into turn one, turn two. And then we’re getting more understeer through the last corner.
Q2 14:46 Marco Schupbach Adrian Sutil Track is clear.
Q2 12:50 Marco Matassa Daniil Kvyat Work on your brakes, the position is good, you can pace yourself.
Q2 12:40 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez So that’s Kvyat ahead, new super-soft, and Massa behind, new super-soft. BBW is active, Checo. OK so push Kvyat all the way and just increase your gap toward the final chicane. And it will be purple mode one before the final chicane.
Q2 10:47 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Rosberg’s radio is working again.
OK just confirm you’re going for lap two and give us a radio check.
Q2 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross Affirm lap two, radio check is OK.
Q2 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Copy, copy. So strat mode is good. Front brake temperatures coming up together. So we’re going for lap two. You’ve currently got 20 seconds behind you. Tyre temperatures are 11 front ant 10 rear so just remember taking it easy through turn five, turn seven. Don’t get the tyres too hot.
Q2 9:34 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull notice Rosberg isn’t pushing for a time and advise Ricciardo, who’s ahead of the Mercedes, to drop back and make use of the extra space for his lap.
Rosberg looks like he’s on a build lap, so if you need to make space to Grosjean you can, Rosberg now eight seconds behind you. Mode seven. Rosberg is making space behind you, you can make six seconds gap behind you.
Q2 8:00 Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso How was the lap, Fernando?
Q2 Fernando Alonso Andrea Stella Good, very good.
Q2 Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso OK, it’s Bottas and Massa, they did a 15.8, 15.9, us 16.1. Still no problem behind us, just Grosjean in P7, watch for him. Then you 16.1, Hulkenberg 16.3, Raikkonen 16.3, Vergne 16.3, Vettel 16.5.
Q2 6:44 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez How’s the balance, Checo?
Q2 Sergio Perez Gianpiero Lambiase Not able to get front end on the first timed lap. I think I needed a little bit more aggressive [unclear] for the start of the lap.
Q2 4:01 Gianpiero Lambiase Sergio Perez Perez’s tyre prepration went better for his final run, but he still wasn’t able to make the cut for Q3.
Tyre pressures and temperatures look better. It’ll be purple mode one before the final chicane. Weave in a straight line now, get the front tyres in.
Q2 2:44 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Scenario one at the end of the straight.
Q2 0:58 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Straight out. You shuold be all clear, you’ve got two cars behind you.
Q2 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington What strategy?
Q2 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton It’ll be strat mode eight. You’ve got brake magic on. You’ve got Magnussen and Button behind, both on out laps. Nico the car ahead, six seconds, also on an out lap. We’ll be going for one timed lap. So update strat mode it’ll be strat mode five. Tyres are 105 all round. Youve’ got Magnussen behind, 0.6 of a second.
Q2 0:00 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Vettel moves up from the drop zone to get into Q3.
P5. Good job, mate.
Q2 0:00 Dave Robson Jenson Button We’re safely through so we can box this lap. Yellow G2, cool the brakes and box this lap.
Q2 0:00 Brad Joyce Nico Hulkenberg Less than a tenth of a second covered the cars from eighth to twelfth. Hulkenberg was eleventh.
And one tenth would have seen you in P8. Just half a tenth, that’s all you needed.
Q3 11:42 Jean-Eric Vergne Xevi Pujolar Messages from the end of Q2.
What was the result?
Q3 Xevi Pujolar Jean-Eric Vergne We are P10 but not finished yet. Yes, P10. Good job, Jev.
Q3 Jean-Eric Vergne Xevi Pujolar Yes, yes!
Q3 9:47 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas Track is clear. Think about this out-lap pace.
Q3 7:13 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Just bring the tyres up a little bit more if you want. Just remember good brake into the last corner, just to bring everything up.
Q3 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross Bring the tyres up or down?
Q3 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg You can bring them up if you’re a little bit nervous about it, more. Strat five and remember a good brake into the last corner. Temperatures are 12 front and 10.5 rear.
Q3 4:55 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Hamilton looked on course to beat Rosberg’s first lap in Q3 but lost time in the final sector.
So that’s P2 at the moment, six-hundredths, it’s just that last sector with traffic by the look of it.
Q3 4:47 Jenson Button Dave Robson Button did his first run on used tyres.
Yeah, just generally low grip as you would expect.
Q3 3:12 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo Clear track ahead and behind. You’re currently P5, a tenth behind Bottas in P3. Massa is very close, just ahead of us a couple of thousandths. Rosberg is currently quickest, Rosberg is six-tenths ahead.
Q3 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie Understood.
Q3 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo How’s the balance?
Q3 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie Yeah I didn’t get as good an out-lap so just felt the fronts struggled a little bit more initially. So I think the key is a good out-lap.
Q3 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo OK understood. It should be easier next time with everyone on the same programme.
Q3 1:01 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel There’s a couple of tenths in the first sector, a tenth in the middle sector, and not a lot in the last sector. Sebastian do you want a bit of front wing?
Q3 Sebastian Vettel Guillaume Rocquelin Yes please go up three clicks.
Q3 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Copy.
Q3 0:00 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Rosberg claims pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix.
You are P1 Nico, good job, really good job, well done. Just looking after the tyres on the in-lap.
Q3 0:00 Jonathan Eddollls Valtteri Bottas Good effort Valtteri. So we’re P4, excellent stuff.
Q3 0:00 Daniel Ricciardo Simon Rennie Fighting the rear. It’s all over the place at the rear.
Q3 Simon Rennie Daniel Ricciardo OK, understood. We finished P6. Four hundredths away from P3, very tight. Rosberg was a 14.8, Hamilton 14.9, Vettel was P3, 15.55.
Q3 0:00 Valtteri Bottas Jonathan Eddollls Thank you guys. Well done everybody. Tomorrow should be good.

  1. Button hasn’t articulated once over the weekend, my wife even wondered if he was drunk :P

Delighted to see JEV finally having some qualifying speed. Thanks guys.

  2. Glad these are back – they’re my favourite post-event features. Thanks to Keith and co for putting them together… Here’s hoping that the last two race transcripts surface some time. Monaco in particular should contain some gems.

  3. Interesting that Rosberg is asked to look after the tyres on his inlap at the end of Q3. You would think that they would not use those tyres again?

    1. The top ten drivers have to start the race on the same tyres as they qualified with.

      1. Wrong. All top ten start the races on the set of tyres they used to set their best time in Q2.

  4. Race Transcript ? Come on guy, no race transcript since Chineese GP please don’t take us for fools !

  5. @Punisher indeed!!
