Two key turning points in the Canadian Grand Prix happened around the middle of the race.
The most obvious was the double MGU-K failures which hit the two Mercedes drivers at almost exactly the same moment just after half-distance.
The other, which was not immediately obviously, came on lap 38 when Daniel Ricciardo jumped ahead of team mate Sebastian Vettel despite having made his second pit stop one lap after his team mate.
As the team radio transcript shows, Vettel was alert to the threat from his team mate behind at this point in the race. While also stuck behind Nico Hulkenberg, Vettel’s in-lap was a 1’20.3. But by pitting he created space for Ricciardo, who banged in a superb in-lap of 1’19.4 the next time by, and duly got the jump on Vettel.
This was crucial because it was Ricciardo who went on to pass Sergio Perez and Nico Rosberg later in the race to claim his first ever win. Vettel’s frustration at the change of positions was clear to see from his radio messages.
Late in the race Jenson Button came to the fore, claiming fourth place, though his progress was somewhat overlooked due to the drama unfolding ahead of him. In the closing stages of the race his team thought he even had a chance of winning the race.
Button’s elevation to fourth came partly thanks to the last-lap crash between Perez and Felipe Massa. Afterwards Williams claimed Force India should have retired their car because of the problems Perez was in. The radio messages show how the team were helping Perez cope with his braking and power unit problems.

---|---|---|---|
PR | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | So saving fuel and cooling the car. And bite-point eight. |
PR | Daniil Kvyat | Marco Matassa | Yeah, everything’s OK. I’m on the grid. |
PR | Marco Matassa | Daniil Kvyat | OK, 41 Daniil. So comments on balance? |
PR | Daniil Kvyat | Marco Matassa | This message from Kvyat revealed he was starting the race on the soft tyres instead of the super-soft. Err… I’d say a bit of understeer in the slow-speed corners, but for the rest it’s OK. So I think I would leave it as it is for now and considering that this tyres takes a bit of time to come in. |
PR | Marco Matassa | Daniil Kvyat | All clear, copy that. |
PR | David Lloyd | Kimi Raikkonen | OK, so radio check from the pit wall. Just to let you know as well, wind direction is very similar to yesterday. It does keep switching around a little bit, so it’s a tail wind into turn ten. But apart from that, it’s quite light. Similar to yesterday. |
PR | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | The track temperature’s going up and up, right? |
PR | Gary Gannon | Max Chilton | When we fire up, I’m going to ask you to ‘Fail-86’, OK? So go to Fail-86, OK? Then we’ll put the pit limiter on and do two static bite-point finds. And remember the procedure for the formation lap. We’ll do the start, and then you’ll do two clutch pulls at turn ten, three or four tyre warmings and back to ‘ENG-1’ and on the start. I’ll call out the switches. Maldonado had some issue, I’ll think he’ll be OK, but just be aware if he doesn’t actually go. And also, just let us know if you feel any more engine issues, let us know right away and we’ll look at it. |
FL | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | OK Nico, can we have some feedback on the start? Your brakes are cold. |
FL | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Under-engaged. A little bit Under-engaged. |
FL | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Affirm Nico, and we need lots of lift-and-coast. |
1 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Chilton hits Bianchi, taking both out of the race, resulting in a six-lap Safety Car period. Safety Car, Safety Car. You’re staying out. Go Strat-12 and save as much fuel as you can for the moment. Keep your delta positive, you’re staying out. Just confirm, everything OK with the car at the moment, Nico? |
2 | Francesco Nenci | Jules Bianchi | You OK, Jules? |
2 | Jules Bianchi | Francesco Nenci | Yeah, I’m OK. |
2 | Francesco Nenci | Jules Bianchi | Go to P0. Go to P1-P0. |
2 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | Please check tyre pressures. There were quite a lot of debris. |
2 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | Checo, the information we have, or that we can give you, is that there is less debris off-line in those corners. Stay off-line if you can. And more brake temperature. |
3 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | OK Sebastian, if you go through the chicane again – turn three and turn four – just have a good look at the track conditions. There’s fluid on the exit of turn four, which we think is on-line. Just have a good look, you know better. |
3 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis, doing a good job there. That looks like that’s coming back to life. That looks good actually. So, tyres are 90 all around. Ninety. |
4 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | I need a lot of power at the start. |
4 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | Yeah, copy that, Lewis. Restart will be in Strat mode five. We’ll only have a lap of that, but one Strat mode five. |
4 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | OK, tell the marshalls there’s still a piece of debris roughly 20-25 metres after they put the sand dust over the oil. |
4 | Ayao Komatsu | Romain Grosjean | OK, just for your information, there was oil at turn four, which is getting cleared up at the moment. |
5 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | And what’s the condition in turn four, Nico? Has the car gone? |
5 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Affirm. |
5 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | OK, so could go green this lap. Not confirmed yet, so really starting to warm everything up. |
6 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Right Sebastian, think about bias for restart. You’re currently minus-two, which would be good for on-track, but could be a bit short for first lap. And ten car lengths, if you can. |
6 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | And Sebastian, we suggest we should actually go back to Multi-2, Map-2. Multi-2, Map-2. The issue that you have is just due to recovery, so it will clear up on the restart. We don’t want to be stuck in three. So, Multi-2, Map-2 and then you can go back to Multi-3. Reverse off, please. Reverse off. |
7 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Need someone to keep an eye out at the restart to see what people do in turn four, please. If people clean it up, I can attack there. |
7 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | Yeah, OK Lewis. We’ll have someone on it. So, again, fuel is good. You’re doing a good job on that saving. |
7 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Brakes don’t feel like they’re working that well. |
7 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | Yeah, fronts are just starting to drop-off a little bit. Just work them a bit. |
8 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | The race has now restarted. Yeah Lewis, I’m sure you’ve seen it, but the outside of turn four does look bad, so you are going to have to modify your line, obviously. Just make sure you maintain that ten car-length distance. |
8 | Angel Baena | Marcus Ericsson | Ericsson pulled into the pits to retire. OK Marcus, box box. Engine problem. Box, box, box. Partial throttle only. Partial throttle. |
9 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Fuel is good to the end |
9 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | OK excellent. Purple mode two. Watch Jenson. Purple mode two. |
10 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | And rear tyre temperatures are 14.5 to 15. So just look after the rears, now. And DRS is enabled, but gap to Vettel, 1.4 seconds. |
12 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Hamilton has taken second from Vettel Sebastian, I need you to stay on top of your tyres, OK. Don’t let that get to you. |
12 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | Perez has pulled more than a second clear of Button. We have broken Jenson’s DRS. We’ve broken Jenson’s DRS so just watch the rear tyres sliding behind the Ferraris. |
13 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | OK, heavy graining. Rear-left and rear-right. Looking at Hamilton’s tyres, they also look quite bad. |
13 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Understood. |
13 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | OK, prepare the stint to be shorter than you thought. |
13 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Copy |
13 | Valtteri Bottas | Jonathan Eddollls | I’m now getting rear graining. Rear graining. So just watch the rear tyre sliding behind the Ferraris. |
13 | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | Copy that. |
13 | Marco Matassa | Daniil Kvyat | NOC 6 to catch Gutierrez, come on Danny. |
14 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Update tyre entry when you can. And how is the balance? |
14 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | The Hoagys will help you not just with fuel but with tyres and brakes. |
15 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | OK Jenson, box this lap. Box this lap. Push now if you can, let’s get everything out of this set. Push now. |
16 | Kimi Raikkonen | David Lloyd | Raikkonen asks how to perform a change he’s been instructed to make. My rear tyres are starting to go a little bit. I don’t know where is ‘P4’ [unclear]. |
16 | David Lloyd | Kimi Raikkonen | OK so it’s 12 clicks on the ’10’ button, and four clicks on the ‘1’ button. |
19 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Massa had a slow pit stop, so he has dropped back. |
19 | Adrian Sutil | Marco Schupbach | The car is very understeery. Was too much front wing change. |
19 | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | Understood Adrian, but I think it will be OK because we will get rear deg’ as well. |
21 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | And just… gap to Lewis is three seconds, so just managing the gap to Lewis. We’ll give you updates. |
21 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | So Checo, we are target plus four. Target plus four. |
22 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel, the two Mercedes are out ahead. Behind them are the two Force Indias – they look like they’re one-stopping. And then behind them is Sebastian and Bottas and then you. |
22 | Mark Slade | Pastor Maldonado | OK Pastor. Doing a good job there. Most cars have stopped and switched from [super-softs] to [softs] now. [Super-soft] deg’ was higher than expected. |
22 | Pastor Maldonado | Mark Slade | Vettel is behind one-stopping Hulkenberg [Unclear] |
23 | Andrew Murdoch | Felipe Massa | OK, that’s a good job. Now get after Fernando. |
24 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | Kobayashi has spun at Turn 2 OK I’m struggling to get by. |
24 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel, you are catching the cars ahead. Might get interesting – three cars fighting ahead. Charge-9. Charge-9. |
26 | Kamui Kobayashi | Tim Wright | Hamilton has closed up to around a second behind Rosberg I lost the rear, I lost the rear. I don’t know! I lost the rear suspension. |
26 | Tim Wright | Kamui Kobayashi | Perez has now completed 28 laps on the Super Softs – more than any other driver OK Kamui, stop. Stop there. Kill then engine with P1. Wait five seconds, then go to P0. |
27 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | So remember, double DRS. May not have it this time, though. |
28 | Sergio Perez | Brad Joyce | Sutil is behind his team mate They’re doing very well, this tyre, right? |
28 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | This is an excellent job, Checo. We’re happy at the moment, you continue what you’re doing and we are gapping cars. Close to gapping Vergne and Alonso at this stage. Continue what you’re doing. |
29 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis so Nico is under investigation so don’t take any risks. |
29 | Adrian Sutil | Marco Schupbach | So, can I pass or what? |
29 | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | OK, change position, change position. |
29 | Adrian Sutil | Marco Schupbach | My engine is really slow compared to his. |
29 | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | Copy, Adrian, copy. The rear wing is different, as you know. Keep pushing Adrian. |
30 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | OK we are extening this stint at the moment, Checo. |
31 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | OK Checo, so we’re looking to extend this stint for the moment. Use your tyre rotaries to give us feedback on the tyre condition, OK? |
31 | Sergio Perez | Brad Joyce | Yes, I feel a little drop off for the rears. Only a little bit. We’ll see how far we can go. |
31 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | Copy. |
32 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Nico, we need to increase fuel saving again. Fuel is increasing at the moment. So where you can, longer gears and a little bit more Hoagys. |
32 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Keep an eye on the front vibrations, they’re getting bad. |
32 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Copy. |
33 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis, so no penalty for Nico. No penalty for Nico, he’s on his final warning for cutting the final chicane. |
34 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Where is my team mate on brake balance, forwards or rearwards? |
34 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | He’s more rearwards of you, you’re more forwards. |
36 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | OK be smart in terms of strategy. |
37 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Both leading Mercedes lose MGU-K power Lost power. I’ve got no power, guys. |
37 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK, we’re looking into it. We’re looking into it. |
38 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | So driver default-01. Driver default-01. So seems that this is both cars at the moment, so let’s have that driver default. |
38 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | [MGU-]K is still not there anymore! |
38 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | OK Nico, we’re trying to solve it. We’re trying to solve it. We believe your team mate has the same problem. |
39 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Ricciardo came out of the pits ahead of Vettel on lap 38 after the pair had made their second pit stops. OK Sebastian be smart. The worst thing you can do now is to [unclear] your tyres have nothing left for the end. |
40 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Hulkenberg has not pitted. Hulkenberg has not pitted. |
40 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | Best for me to stay out and over-run him. |
41 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | Why did you not let me stay out? I could have gone faster once Hulkenberg pitted. |
41 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Mate, concentrate on your race. That’s where we’re at at the moment. |
41 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | OK Checo, so we’ll need to use the ‘overtake’ button out of Turn 10, OK? You have Ricciardo behind. Vettel was not able to pass Nico, so just use the ‘overtake’ button out of Turn 10. OK, now settle down with the slip. Control the rear slip. We have our pit stop window, OK. So just settle down and control the rear tyres. |
41 | Sergio Perez | Brad Joyce | Are we fighting the Red Bull? Or are they ona two stop? |
41 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | They’ve made all of their stops, Checo. They have made their stops. We are racing them. |
42 | Gianpiero Lambiase | Nico Hulkenberg | Pits this lap, pits this lap, pit confirm. Pits this lap, pits this lap, pit confirm. |
42 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel do not lift early, it’s bad for energy. Do not save any fuel, it’s bad for energy. |
42 | Daniel Ricciardo | Simon Rennie | OK. |
44 | Andrew Murdoch | Felipe Massa | OK Felipe we want to see if we can make these tyres last until the end. |
44 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | OK Nico situation: Both cars have the same problem. We don’t think we can resolve it. Obviously you need to pick the pace up because P3 is catching you now. |
44 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | And let us know a flap adjust for the stop, please Nico. |
44 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | No change. |
45 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | And Strat-5. Use ‘overtake’ where you need to. You’re racing Massa. Massa hasn’t stopped for a second time, OK? He’s on older tyres than you. |
46 | Felipe Massa | Andrew Murdoch | Information, start to feel a little bit the rear going away slightly compared to before. |
46 | Andrew Murdoch | Felipe Massa | OK, copy that. Understood. We’ll just keep monitoring your laptimes as you are. Go diff mid-3. Go diff mid-3. |
47 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK, Hamilton ahead is slow. Hamilton ahead is slow. He’s approaching turn eight now. |
47 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Brakes have failed. |
48 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | OK, you’re now up to P3 at this stage. P3. Look after your rear slip. Look after your rear slip. Think we look comfortable in a straight line using the ‘overtake’ button, just look after your rear. |
48 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Brakes: Go back to EB1, B-mig one, looking after the brakes now. Your team mate has a problem. Most important you finish now. Looking after the brakes. |
49 | Andrew Murdoch | Felipe Massa | Massa has pitted for a second time OK Felipe, you’ll be racing cars on the pit exit. You’ll be racing cars on the pit exit. |
51 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Rosberg is just one second ahead, he’s very slow on the straights. |
51 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | So we think caliper and brake temperatures are OK at the moment, so just push a little bit where you can Nico. Try and keep the gap. |
52 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | OK Sebastian you’re +4 Hulkenberg. Clearly your best chance is to have some tyres left for the end. Daniel’s going to destroy his tyres trying to pass Perez. Last ten laps, you should have the grip. |
52 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | Perez has been passed by Ricciardo and has lost second It’d be good if you can get up to Rosberg’s DRS, Checo. Push up to Rosberg if you can, but look after your rear tyres, first objective. |
52 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | So everything is under control. You need to pull a gap in sectors one and two to defend against three. |
54 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel where do you think is the most likely place for a pass? We’ll work out the energy around it. |
55 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | You’re doing a really good job. |
56 | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | OK, last lap was not enough. We need more saving. Last lap was not enough, we need more. |
56 | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | OK Adrian, there’s no option now. We have to save. We have to save as much as we can. |
57 | Andrew Murdoch | Felipe Massa | Williams told Bottas to let Massa past. But Bottas runs wide trying to pass Hulkenberg and Massa got through anyway. OK Felipe, keep up this pressure. We need to pass, we need to pass. Our battery’s getting low. |
57 | Felipe Massa | Andrew Murdoch | I need to get past! I’m much quicker than them! |
57 | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | Swap positions as soon as we can. |
57 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | OK Jenson, you’re currently one of the quickest cars on the circuit. More than a second a lap faster than Hulkenberg. Let’s keep this up, keep pushing to the end. |
57 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | Great job, JB. We can get some more points out of this, for sure. Let’s keep pushing. |
59 | Andrew Murdoch | Felipe Massa | Good job Felipe, good job. |
60 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel, we need to keep cooling the car. When you can, pull out the tow when it’s safe to do so. |
61 | David Lloyd | Kimi Raikkonen | Fuel-4. Fuel-4. Be careful of the tyres, we still have ten laps to go. |
61 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Alright, Sebastian. The way you’re doing it – nine and 12 toggle, like you’re doing it – is good. |
62 | Andrew Murdoch | Felipe Massa | OK Felipe, multifunction-A, opti-position one. Multifunction-A, opti-position one. |
63 | Andrew Murdoch | Felipe Massa | Your tyres are ten laps newer than the guys in front. |
63 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | So Checo, at the moment, we are one tenth from getting DRS, for your information. |
64 | Jenson Button | Dave Robson | Button has almost caught Hulkenberg and Alonso, and he’s within ten seconds of the race leader. This should be fun! |
64 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | Yep, absolutely. Let’s make the most of it. Let’s enjoy it. We’ve won races from here before. |
65 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Danny we need to keep cooling the car. Pull out of the tow in the places you can’t get overtaken. |
65 | Sergio Perez | Brad Joyce | [Unclear]… I have no brakes left! |
66 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | Ok Checo… I mean, if you’re concerned… |
66 | Sergio Perez | Brad Joyce | Reset! |
66 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | Reset BBW! And if you’re really concerned, then you’ll need to box. But stay out if you think you can. Reset the BBW switch. Off and on. Off and on. |
67 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | Push up to Ricciardo’s DRS, mate. Push up to Ricciardo… |
67 | Sergio Perez | Brad Joyce | [Unclear]… I don’t have rear brakes. What else can I do? |
68 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | Checo stick with it. There’s just three laps to go after this one. We’re looking at it, we are looking at the issue. |
68 | Brad Joyce | Sergio Perez | OK, it’s back on. It’s back on, Checo. Checo, move the brake balance forward. Forward brake balance to save rears. Two clicks. Come on, mate. If we push up to Ricciardo’s DRS we will overtake him. You’ll be lapping Sutil. You’ll be lapping Sutil. |
70 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Nobody can overtake you, you’re going to win the race, stay positive on the delta mate. |
70 | Gianpiero Lambiase | Nico Hulkenberg | Where did Button get you? |
70 | Nico Hulkenberg | Gianpiero Lambiase | Just before the last chicane. Halfway down the straight before the last chicane. |
70 | Gianpiero Lambiase | Nico Hulkenberg | Copy that. |
VL | Christian Horner | Daniel Ricciardo | You’ve won the Canadian Grand Prix! Well done, your first win. |
VL | Daniel Ricciardo | Christian Horner | Wow! |

I’m told on the VL there was a conversation between Button and Robson that went along the lines of:
DR: Well done on getting those last two places here.
JB: Yeah, it was fairly simple. Alonso went wide, forced Hulkenberg wide and I managed to get both of them.
DR: Ah right. The cameras didn’t see it.
JB: In that case it was overtake of the century. Most skilful bit of driving ever. Shame you missed it.

I loved hearing him say “This should be fun!” but if that conversation happened, that’s even more to show Jenson’s having a great time out there!

Haha JB is awesome!
“It was fairly simple”…
“The cameras didn’t see it”
“In that case it was the overtake of the century!” xD

In reality, 7 years ago, Massa did exactly the same passing move at Turn 10, Gilles Villeneuve. By this way, it was the overtake of millennimum :)

I read somewhere that on the radio on the VL Daniel asked whether Sergio and Felipe were alright before he celebrated. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Real sportsmanship if he did, and huge respect.

Yes, it’s in the Canal+ “Onboard” montage they do, just after 27:20. FOM only broadcast “Wow”, but he actually says “Wow, hope the drivers are okay”.

Keep listening and you’ll hear Vettel whining (“I’m not happy”) in spite of finishing third!
Diego (@ironcito)
19th June 2014, 5:10
He said that he’s not happy with the strategy, which arguably cost him a victory. I wouldn’t be happy, either. Besides, champions racing with top teams aren’t happy even with second place, they want to win. He did, however, say that the team did a good job with everything else.

Vettel even tells his team he can over-run hulk, but RB just ignores him. It’s not the first time RB got vettel’s strategy completely wrong this year.
Keith Campbell (@keithedin)
19th June 2014, 10:08
Yes they got it wrong, but Seb only suggested the over-run after his pitstop. Before that what he said was “OK be smart in terms of strategy”. The undercut is usually the preferred strategy, but in this gp it wasn’t working well because of tyre warm-up.

Gary Gannon to Max Chilton: “When we fire up, I’m going to ask you to ‘Fail-86′”
So i assume “Fail-86” means take out yourself and your teammate on the opening lap.

Shouldn’t that be “Multi-Fail-86” then? ^^
