Half of the F1 field had at least one of their lap times deleted for running too wide at turn eight during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Eleven drivers in the 22-strong field were caught out by running too far across the kerb, which they had been warned about before the session began.

The most frequent offender was Marcus Ericsson, who had three of his four flying laps deleted in Q1.

That was the session which saw the most infringements, with only three further lap time deletions occuring in Q2 and Q3. The latter included Nico Hulkenberg, who lost his only lap time from the top ten shoot-out.

    1. Although Hamilton and Hulkenberg would be a position lower with their Q3 laps, and Ericsson only one tenth slower in the same position.

      1. And it looks like Sutil would have bumped Maldonado out of Q1 actually.

      2. If Chilton had taken a right after turn 1 and made a shortcut to turn 6, he might have made it into Q2.

  3. Highlights the fact Massa was on the edge but also never made a mistake. Great effort!

    1. He blocked wheels a couple of times and missed the apex again a couple of times. He could’ve squeezed like 2 or 3 tenths more of his time if he didn’t make those mistakes.

    In Q3 on the first run rosberg ran all 4 wheels off the track at turn 8 but his lap wasn’t deleted, am I missing something or should his lap be deleted like it was for everyone else?

    1. I think it was just fine. I saw it as well and felt the right front was slightly off-track, but it was not all that clear.

  7. I approve of this no nonsense approach by the stewards. You’re either inside the defined line or you aren’t. It is a pity that they’ve taken this long to clamp down on the track limits thing. It has been one of the things that grates on me. Better late than never I suppose, but I just hope they continue to keep a clamp down on it.

  8. You know what would be effective? A bloody gravel trap! Or at least put something that actually slows the car down next to the gravel trap. Doesn’t need to cover the entire run off area, but at least a strip next to the ripple strip. Some corners have the astroturf but that doesn’t seem to slow the drivers much anyway.

    2. I always think it should be some kind of material that sticks to the tyres and makes you a bit slower for the next few corners so that you don’t gain an advantage by running wide.
