Several times this year the team radio broadcasts have given us revealing insights into the growing rivalry between the two Mercedes drivers as they fight for a championship which will surely be won by one of them.

That was true in Austria as well – but with one interesting difference. Nico Rosberg wanted a break from the endless stream of information while he worked his way to the front while his team mate stalked him from behind.

Far more messages were heard from Lewis Hamilton’s side of the garage as he tried to make up for a poor qualifying position while grappling with overheating brakes. A lengthy discussion involving him and his engineers before the beginning of the race revealed Mercedes were using less aggressive engine braking settings in Austria.

This had consequences for both drivers in the race as their brakes, which were taking more of the strain of slowing the cars, became too hot. Hamilton was getting warning about this as early as lap ten. And although Rosberg had the same problem, Hamilton found it impaired his ability to gain on his team mate when the two were running at the front of the field in the closing laps.

The pair hit the front after displacing the Williams drivers who had locked out the front row of the grid. Felipe Massa dropped to fourth having been leading before his first pit stop, and in the final stint his team were concerned about covering off the threat from Alonso, who made his final pit stop late.

Williams succeeded in keeping Alonso at bay, but other teams’ radio communications did not go so smoothly. Nico Hulkenberg had to asked for a clarification when Force India issued team orders using somewhat euphemistic language.

But that was nothing compared to the mess at Sauber. The team had already made one disastrous mistake by sending Esteban Gutierrez out of his pit box with one wheel not properly attached. They then made matters worse by telling their driver to stop – but broadcasting the instruction to his team mate instead.

An unhappy Adrian Sutil grumbled about the time he lost getting on the brakes before realising the message was meant for the other Sauber.

Lap*FromToMessage
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonDo you need a flap adjust? Let us know, stop in the box if you do.
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHalf a turn out, please.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK so down half a turn please, Rob. Down half a turn.
PRNico HulkenbergBrad Joyce[Unclear] good I think the clutch torque transfer [unclear] as on the first start. Also the initial bite felt less although it went deeper.
PRBrad JoyceNico HulkenbergCopy that, Nico.
PRBernie CollinsJenson ButtonAnd Jenson more cooling please, and test your drinks.
PRJenson ButtonBernie CollinsOK.
PRBernie CollinsJenson ButtonAnd the guys will pick you up at the back of the grid.
PRJonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasDo you need a front wing adjust?
PRValtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsNo feels OK. Bit of understeer in low speed but high speed low speed’s quite OK. I’ll try one more lap.
PRJonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasCopy that.
PRMarcus EricssonAngel BaenaMy lap is not too bad, it’s a bit understeery high speed but I think it’s just because the tyre’s going to come in the front end so I think the balance we should keep.
PRAngel BaenaMarcus EricssonOK Marcus I’m on my way to the grid. I’ll see you in about two, three minutes.
PRAndrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK this time to the grid, to the grid.
PRDaniel RicciardoSimon RennieAt the moment rears out of low speed is a little bit weak. So traction’s a bit poor out of two. But then through the high speed quite a bit of understeer for now.
PRSimon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK understood. So that might be warm-up. Round to the grid, please, round to the grid. Can you still smell fuel, question?
PRDaniel RicciardoSimon RennieA little bit. It’s toned down.
PRSimon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK understood. When you stop, be no bite points. P1 for ten seconds and then P0 please.
PRBetween engineers on Vergne’s radio
OK Olly front flap minus one half.
PRCopy.
PRBetween engineers on Raikkonen’s radio
A couple of drivers have complained about high-speed understeer on the way to the grid. I don’t know what Kimi said. But for your information, a few other people complained about it.
PRHe said that the balance was OK for him. But we take off half on the grid.
PROK.
PRBetween engineers on Alonso’s radio.
OK comments from Fernando: No front locking. Much less than yesterday. Front was a bit better today. The grip seems to be OK. Fernando asked if we should change the track balance pre-load because we don’t have front locking. Let me know, it was just a suggestion, nothing like he wants to do that.
PRI was exactly about to tell you, Andrea, I would like to do multi-function BBM position three, we are in two, we went rearward yesterday, I will come back to the standard. So multi-function BBM position three. For the corner two I see some rear locking. I think the right switch will help in that situation.
PRRomain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuGrosjean is starting from the pit lane.
What do you think, when we start the car should I move into the maximum line and then maybe I can see the big screen?
PRAyao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanYeah if you can move to that side slot where you did the practice start. Basically wherever the best grip is.
PRRomain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuAh it’s in front of you is… later you go, better it is. So if you go almost where the car is, just before the line, that’s where it is
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK so in terms of aero balance Nico is half a turn more forwards on aero balance. But he is two front bars stiffer. So more forward on mechanical, more understeer mechanically, but he has half a turn more aero balance. He is reporting car is quite oversteery at the moment. That’s where he’s at.
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonYep. So the feeling on that run, on those out-laps, is that brake balance is too far forward.
PRJock ClearLewis HamiltonAffirm, you were up at plus two then.
PRLewis HamiltonJock ClearYeah so I think for the first run I need to bring it back to what I did in the first session, so I’m going to bring it back to zero.
PRJock ClearLewis HamiltonAffirm, bring it back to zero. B-mig four I think is OK, yep.
PRLewis HamiltonJock ClearAnd I’ll do the bite point two, erm EB [engine braking] two, sorry.
PRJock ClearLewis HamiltonAffirm. And can we go strat mode one please on the grid. You’ll be going to strat mode five after you’ve done the bite-point find on the grid. That’s on the real grid.
PRLewis HamiltonJock ClearOK and just for the first corner, come back on the EB [engine braking]? Er, sorry, come back on the b-bal [brake balance]? For rearwards bias, first two corners.
PRJock ClearLewis HamiltonDepends on how you feel the tyre is warming up. If you feel the fronts are nice and warm and they feel like they’re waring up easily, then yes come back one. But if not… Er, sorry, then you can stay where… If the fronts are slow to warm up then yeah come back to minus one.
PRLewis HamiltonJock ClearOK.
PRJock ClearLewis HamiltonI think for the first couple of stops it’s not a bad idea to come back to EB [engine braking] three. Don’t forget these EB levels are lower than normal. So EB two that you’ve got now is sort of EB one-and-a-half in the past. So EB three would have been EB two at other races and on Friday.
PRLewis HamiltonJock ClearAgreed, yeah. Now it’s pushing on quite a lot so…
FLSimon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK Daniel three cars on [soft tyres] of interest: Button 11th, Maldonado 13th and Perez in 16th [actually 15th], OK? Three cars on [soft].
FLUnknownSebastian VettelVettel suffered a power unit failure on the second lap, at this point Red Bull seem to have had no indication it was about to happen.
Engine is good, gearbox is good and battery is good.
FLBernie CollinsJenson ButtonOK Jenson we still need eight. And can we have Yellow G3 and HPB mid position.
1Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonAnd cancel RS, cancel RS.
3Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoCharge ten, charge ten. Yellow, Sebastian is slow on the right-hand side down to turn three. Vettel is slow on the right-hand side.
4Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinI lost drive, I lost drive. Tell me what to do please. Please tell me what to do.
4Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelWe’re looking at it, we’re looking at it.
4Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinI have no throttle response.
4Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelUnderstood, we’re looking at it mate. Cars are in turn one.
4Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinEngine still running, please tell me what to do.
4Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelTurn it off, just pull over and turn it off. Pull over and turn it off. Cars back straight now coming at you.
4Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinOK, for some reason I got drive again.
7Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoDo not use overtake. Do not use the overtake button at all, do not press overtake.
7Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieOK I haven’t pressed it.
7Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoYeah OK understood, we see you haven’t pressed it yet. But do not press it for the rest of the race, please.
7Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelOK Sebastian so you know we think the failure is due to the use of the overtake button so do not use overtake. OK Sebastian, go racing, go racing.
7Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceRears are struggling.
7Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergCopy that Nico, copy that.
8Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaKeep looking after the rear-left, we have to look after the rear-left tyre. Try diff entry four.
8Kimi RaikkonenDavid LloydNo response heard.
Is my DRS working because I’m very close and I don’t get by.
9Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaWe need to keep looking after the rear-left exit turns one, two and three. Obviously keep short-shifting where possible.
9Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezOK Checo super-soft tyres runners suffering with rear graining. OK so just manage the tyres at the moment. Checo, information: Ricciardo has been instructed not to use the overtake button and his DRS button may not we working. So possibility ahead.
10Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis front brakes again over limit. Just have a think about the compromises.
10Adrian SutilMarco SchupbachMy graining is getting really bad.
10Marco SchupbachAdrian SutilCopy Adrian, keep pushing.
11Xevi PujolarJean-Eric VergneOK racing Ricciardo and Dany ahead, Grosjean behind.
12Tony RossNico RosbergThis wasn’t the only time Rosberg asked for less feedback during the race.
Close the gap to Bottas.
12Nico RosbergTony RossStop talking to me Tony, please.
12Tony RossNico RosbergStrat two, cancel magic, RS.
12Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaFelipe, any flap adjust for the next tyre set?
12Felipe MassaAndrew MurdochAt the moment is OK, I don’t feel any understeer which is causing me a problem.
13Craig GardinerEsteban GutierrezKill the tyres Esteban and box this lap. We go to [soft]. Front wing by default will be plus two, confirm.
13Esteban GutierrezCraig GardinerCopy.
14Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK Felipe we’ll box, we’ll box at the end of this lap.
14Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo box, box.
14Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasGive me feedback on tyres, do you want a front wing adjust for the next stop.
14Valtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsTyres still got distance but not that many laps left, maximum five. No flap adjust.
14Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasCopy that, we’re still gapping to those that we’re going to drop out near, so this is looking good.
15Adrian SutilMarco SchupbachSauber released Gutierrez from his pit box too soon and the message telling him to stop was accidentally broadcast to Sutil, who slowed down before being told to get going again.
Yeah I lost seven seconds for nothing.
15Marco SchupbachAdrian SutilAdrian, understood, we are sorry, keep pushing.
16Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelRaikkonen in the pits. So the cars that have stopped are around you. Button ahead on [softs], Maldonado behind on [super-softs].
16Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergWe need a half-a-second a lap Nico so just try to push up to Magnussen if you can.
18Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezCheco whilst we’re not losing time to Rosberg then I’m happy to keep him behind if you can. But do not compromise your race to keep Rosberg behind, OK? Just keep pushing as you are.
18Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK Daniel we need to keep up the pace. Cars ahead still haven’t stopped, they’re going to be close to us at the pit lane exit.
18Guillaume RocquelinSebastian Vettelx
I appreciate you’re in a bit of a limbo because essentially we’re waiting for a Safety Car. Just do your pace without destroying the tyres, that’s the best advice I can give you.
19Peter BonningtonLewis Hamiltonx
OK Lewis, two laps with front brakes over limit, do what you can to manage.
19Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieJust can’t lean on the front tyres. Every time I try to get into the corner they just wash away.
20Dave RobsonJenson ButtonOK Jenson we are looking at target minus three.
20Francesco NenciJules BianchiWe have hot front brake temperatures. Brake balance minus four clicks on the dash.
21Angel BaenaMarcus EricssonKamui braking later two, three and five. You can improve exit nine.
21Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis you can have a few stabs with overtake but use it wisely. We aren’t safe.
22Jenson ButtonDave RobsonWhat times are the chasing pack doing?
22Dave RobsonJenson ButtonJenson, Mid-to-high 14s. Kevin last lap 1’14.6.
22Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis just think about those front brakes again, they are going up.
23Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis let’s lay off the overtake for a bit. We’ll just get that ESS up, get this battery charge back up.
23Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonI have plenty of pace. Can I charge it more?
23Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYeah we’ll look into it Lewis, we are on the limit though at the moment.
23Gary GannonMax ChiltonOK Max let’s try and use the tyre to keep Kobayashi behind, use the tyre. We’ll adjust our plan and use the tyre.
24Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis I know the position you’re in but if you can do a little bit of lift-and-coast to help these brakes that would help.
24Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezCheco just give me a front wing adjust for the next stop, please.
24Sergio PerezGianpiero LambiaseI’m OK to keep it.
24Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezCopy.
25Dave RobsonJenson ButtonOK Jenson Yellow G3 and fuel zero. If the tyres will take it, fuel zero, target minus three.
25Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo you’re well inside the limit now on front brakes.
26Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezSo Checo looking to take everything out of this set at the moment, OK?
27Daniil KvyatMarco MatassaSo big problems with the rear tyres.
27Marco MatassaDaniil KvyatWhich tyre?
27Daniil KvyatMarco MatassaRear-right.
27Marco MatassaDaniil KvyatCopy Dany, copy for rear-right.
27Daniil KvyatMarco MatassaI just skipped the turn. [Unclear] No brakes, no brakes. I lost the brake pedal. I have no brakes.
28Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuWe have a big problem with the rear end. It’s huge.
28Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanOK understood, understood.
28Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergRoll more speed into turn five and six.
29Simon RennieDaniel RicciardoHow’s the balance?
29Daniel RicciardoSimon RennieStabilised. Front’s not getting any worse.
29Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHamilton wants help to get past Bottas but if Mercedes bring him in before Rosberg they might jump him past his team mate.
Need some help, guys, to get past the next car.
29Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis we’re looking into it. We need to manage it strategically.
31Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinVettel collided with Gutierrez.
OK I damaged my front wing.
31Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelUnderstood.
31Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinBox, box.
32Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaRosberg ahead looks slow. OK we need half percent further forwards for brake temperatures.
33Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonThere a huge difference on the straight.
33Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonCopy that Lewis. We’ll have a look, see if there’s anything else we can do.
33Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonBrake info please.
33Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonLast lap you were over target. Not by much. It doesn’t take much management.
34Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasOptimum two, opt-two. More performance.
35UnknownSergio PerezCheco this is [unclear]. Just to confirm you are managing this pace, yeah, this is not degradation we’re seeing?
35Sergio PerezUnknownNico in front is a problem. Can you get him out of my way?
35UnknownSergio PerezJust push up to his DRS and I think you’ll find a way past. OK? Push up to his DRS.
35Sergio PerezUnknownAfter a brief pause.
Losing a lot of time with Nico.
35UnknownSergio PerezI think you should DRS him now. I think you’ll DRS him into turn three.
36Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergPerez is in your DRS, Perez in your DRS. Perez on a different strategy to you.
36Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceClarify that message for me.
36Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergCopy that, Nico. Message for you: Perez in your DRS.
36Nico HulkenbergBrad JoyceJust let me know do you want me to let past or not?
36Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergCopy that yes, strategy different, let him past.
37Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelSebastian box this lap, we’re going to retire the car. Box, box, we’re retiring the car.
38Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergYou’re doing a good job Nico, you’re doing a good job. The lap times are looking good for the age of tyre.
39Tony RossNico RosbergHPP eleven to one, push hard now.
39Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis it’s hammer time.
39Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaStart to close the gap down to the cars in front.
40Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasIncrease your pace if you can. Push up to Rosberg.
40Valtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsThe tyres can’t take many laps more if I push more.
40Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasThat’s fine, push.
40Tony RossNico RosbergPush hard now.
40Nico RosbergTony RossDo not repeat.
40Tony RossNico RosbergNot immediately after the previous message.
Box, box, box.
42Tony RossNico RosbergRosberg leaves the pits.
So it’s important to look after these tyres just to get them to the end of the race. Rear temperatures 14, fronts 15.5.
43David LloydKimi RaikkonenWarning turn eight, warning turn eight. Do not go off the track.
44Felipe MassaAndrew MurdochMassa wants to pit.
[Unclear]
44Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaNo, stay out, stay out for the minute, we’re just managing the traffic behind so stay out.
44Rob SmedleyAndrew MurdochYeah we won’t let him get in there, in a window where we can jump us.
44Felipe MassaAndrew MurdochI have no rear tyres any more.
44Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaCopy that Felipe, understood.
44Tony RossNico RosbergSo you have 30 laps remaining so looking after the tyres. Lewis next car behind, 2.5 seconds.
44Nico RosbergTony RossSo who am I racing, what do I have to do?
44Tony RossNico RosbergYou have to keep Bottas out of your window. He should be out of your window and then you’re racing Lewis to the end.
44Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonBrakes are OK, yeah?
44Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYeah brakes are under control now plenty safe at the moment so just keep managing them.
45Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK Felipe we need you to push at the minute, we need you to push to match Alonso. OK go engine mode position four and we need to be targetting low 13s on lap time.
46Xevi PujolarJean-Eric VergneOK push now, no lift off. Push now for four fuel laps.
47Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasSo you’re currently in position four. Alonso is needing but he needs to stop again so you’re reality position three. Just get to the end on this set of tyres, everything looking good. Tyre management looks good at the moment, Valtteri. Brakes, everything, all under control.
47Valtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsNo response heard.
What’s the gap to the car behind?
47Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezNow’s the time to push please Checo.
48Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaPerez did need to pit again, as at this point he had not yet used the super-soft tyres.
We think Perez needs to stop again.
48Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezOK come on Checo come on mate, now’s the time.
49Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK Felipe we’ve cleared Alonso. We need engine mode position six.
49Sergio PerezGianpiero LambiaseHow is the pace at the moment?
49Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezIt’s stable. We’re very close to Hulk’s pit window but we also have Ricciardo behind that we need to watch. We need a bit more if we can. We’re matching their lap times. They’re obviously on fresher tyres. But anything more that you can give.
50Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK keep looking after the rear tyres. We’ll need these tyres at the end to protect from Alonso. So Alonso’s four seconds behind at the minute.
50Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo gap at 1.4. Nico a tenth faster sectors two and three.
50Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonDoes he have a brake issue like me or not?
50Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYou are both in the same position so it will need management. So losing a little bit of time in turn six and eight. Just have a think about your diff high speed.
51Dave RobsonJenson ButtonOK Jenson we are in the window.
52Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonThe end of the last stint rear tyres were looking a little better for you so may have an opportunity at the end of this race.
52Brad JoyceNico HulkenbergRight Nico we need to push up to Magnussen now if we can. This is a critical stage in the race. Fast as you can to the end now.
53Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonPace?
53Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo just losing out six and seven. Gap is at 1.6. And brakes are good. So apex speed five and six, just Nico carrying a little more.
54Dave RobsonJenson ButtonOK Jenson we are going for our target lap.
55Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezSame lap times as Magnussen or losing a tenth at the moment, OK. At the moment we’re in Hulk’s pit window, so we will come out ahead of Hulk, so we’ll be pushing to fight Magnussen at the end of the race. Just keep pushing on this set.
55Jenson ButtonDave RobsonWhat sort of times is Kimi doing?
55David LloydKimi RaikkonenWe are racing Button, we need two tenths per lap.
55Kimi RaikkonenDavid LloydYeah give me some more power.
55Dave RobsonJenson ButtonVery similar lap times to you. Kimi last lap 13.7.
56Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezRacing Hulk on the exit. Magnussen will be six seconds ahead.
56Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSo front left brake over limit. Just have a think about that B-bal.
57Mark TempleKevin MagnussenJenson immediately in front is the only car that needs to pit. Grosjean is a backmarker. We are effectively P6, Perez is +5.5 on new [super-softs].
58Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonBrakes now on the limit. Losing a little bit on braking two and three but that may be management.
59Dave RobsonJenson ButtonBox this lap.
60Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanIdentified it as something to do with tyre warm-up [unclear].
61Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonBlue flags, blue flags!
61Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonWe hear you, Lewis.
61Jean-Eric VergneXevi PujolarI lost all my brakes. The brakes are gone.
62Andrew MurdochFelipe MassaOK Alonso is in DRS range. Look after the tyres on exit. We have a higher top speed than him. Should be OK.
63Francesco NenciJules BianchiHe’s on [soft], don’t forget.
64Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanStop using top light into turn three.
64Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonGuys give me some updates on where I can be quicker.
64Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYeah copy that Lewis we’ll just get a couple of clean laps, mostly traffic that’s been hurting you. Mainly turns five and six, we’ll give you more information soon. So braking at turn two and three, where you are managing, and turn five and six.
65Adrian SutilMarco SchupbachFor some reason the balance changed, I can’t get it under control.
66Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezPerez passes Magnussen on the run to turn two.
OK Checo so I’m going to leave this to you. When you think you are close enough and ready for a pass on Magnussen you will have two laps in succession in mode two. But use it wisely, OK? Don’t use it until you really think you’re close enough.
66Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezNice job Checo, nice job mate. So let’s pull clear of the DRS and then we’ll bring this home.
68Tony RossNico RosbergSo remember slower in for faster exits, generally.
69Gianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezAlonso twelve seconds ahead with four laps to go. You are one second faster per lap but it’s not enough. Not enough at this stage Checo, don’t worry. Just bring it home, mate.
69Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis four laps remaining and you are strat six to the end.
69Tony RossNico RosbergSo Nico stay in strat six, both cars will stay in strat six to the end.
70Nico RosbergTony RossCan I use overtake?
70Tony RossNico RosbergNico you can use overtake.
71Jonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasFinal lap. Seven seconds to the car in front and six to the car behind.
71Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonOK Lewis you are free to use overtake but stay in strat six. Strat six, just keep managing these brakes. So you can use overtake to the end of the race, that gap’s at 1.1, nearly within DRS. OK Lewis other car’s using overtake, suggest you do the same.
VLTony RossNico RosbergGreat job Nico, great job. Go strat one and pick up rubber. Good job.
VLNico RosbergTony RossWoohoo! Yeah! Come on!
VLPaddy LoweNico RosbergGreat job Nico, fantastic win.
VLNico RosbergPaddy LoweThank you Paddy, awesome stuff.
VLPaddy LoweNico RosbergThat was a difficult one.
VLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonNo response heard.
Great stuff there Lewis that was an excellent recovery, excellent recovery mate. Really well driven, well managed, know it was a tough one.
VLJonathan EddolllsValtteri BottasYes P3 Valtteri, great job. Mega job. Unbelievable drive.
VLValtteri BottasJonathan EddolllsYes! Thank you guys! This means so much to me. Thank you. Everyone of you are so good guys, working so hard. We went the right way. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
VLAndrew MurdochFelipe MassaGreat job Felipe, great job, P4. Good job from your side managing the tyres to the end.
VLRob SmedleyFelipe MassaWell done Felipe that was a good race. I know you probably will be slightly disappointed with that but they were good points. Well done, thank you for driving very sensibly as well in that last stint, we needed it. Well done mate. Good lad.
VLGianpiero LambiaseSergio PerezReally well done Checo, really pleased for you mate. P6 and the pace to challenge for a podium. Well done.
VLSergio PerezGianpiero LambiaseLet’s keep doing what we’re doing. And let’s avoid the other mistakes that hurt us in quali. Good job.
VLMark TempleKevin MagnussenI think you did a really good job managing the tyres through there. Unfortunately the [super-soft] hurt us at the start which meant we weren’t able to race the Force India in front and missed out on sixth. But I think you did a very good job managing the tyres and had very good pace, and did well yesterday, so well done.
VLKevin MagnussenMark TempleWell done guys, well done.
VLSimon RennieDaniel RicciardoNice job on the last lap there mate. We finished P8 after all that hard work.
VLDaniel RicciardoSimon RennieApologies for turn one. Just got hung out. My mistake.
VLSimon RennieDaniel RicciardoOK mate yeah we saw you went over the sausage [kerb] on exit. Nice job on the last lap. I thought you were never going to use mode seven.
VLDaniel RicciardoSimon RennieBetter late than never!
VLSimon RennieDaniel RicciardoYeah.
VLBrad JoyceNico HulkenbergP9 I’m afraid. It seemed like the rear-left tyre just lost temperature so we struggled on the rear-left it looks like on that sint. Final stint wasn’t as good as our middle stint, I’m afraid.
VLNico HulkenbergBrad JoyceYeah but generally, I mean, where’s our pace gone? I compare to Checo, also visually he’s got a much more calm rear end, much more stable.

  1. Keith one question, is this everything or there is more but is not released to the public?.

    1. @zoomracing This is only what was broadcast, there will be loads more that wasn’t broadcast. Some drivers don’t feature at all above, and if you compare those to the drivers we heard the most messages from (probably Hamilton on Sunday) it’s clear there’s loads more.

      1. But do you get a transcript or do you listen to the pit channel broadcast and write down what you hear?

        1. @sato113 In the case of this article it’s all transcribed by me and the messages are those which were broadcast on the pit lane feed and the main feed.

For many of the previous articles this year the transcription, or the bulk of it, was done by @WillWood.

It’s interesting to note that while the majority of the messages on the pit lane feed aren’t played on the main feed, as you’d expect, there are also typically quite a few messages on the main feed which don’t appear on the pit lane feed. And sometimes messages are played on both feeds but edited slightly differently. In the case of those what you see above is an amalgamation of the two.

I believe the makers of the Official F1 App had said it would have exclusive team radio messages on it at some point but as far as I can tell at the moment they just play the pit lane feed over the top of BBC Radio 5 Live’s commentary (James Allen and Allan McNish).

          1. As always, great job! Thanks!

          2. thanks keith!

  2. Was Hamilton actually racing the car or nursing it??? Mercedes need to sort this rubbish out!!

    1. He overcooked his brakes. If he can’t manage them properly, it isn’t his team’s fault.

      1. This is a lame excuse.

Mmm………..It is not very ‘F1’ though, is it? Do you really think drivers should be punished for being fast? To me there is nothing quite so dull and tedious as the sight or sound of a brilliant racer being forbidden to demonstrate those skills because of ‘management’. If that’s the way we are going, and we seem to be, then let’s have two separate championships, one for ‘management’, which can take place in a classroom, and another for ‘driving fast’. I know which one I’ll be watching.

  3. Lol at Kimi’s bit, never disappoints. I mean speaking.

  4. This is really god’s work. Invaluable.

It’s interesting that Nico is being told, slow in fast out. I think read that tip in my GT5 instruction booklet. It’s good advice.

On the “management” issue, I suspect that, because their pace is so strong, MB is not worrying with modifications to improve the ERS and braking reliability. They can just have the drivers manage it and still be well ahead. But if I’m Hamilton I would be lobbying for the team to put on more mechanical braking ability and cooling into the car. Hamilton has the edge in raw pace, however slightly, and so a “management” situation neutralizes his advantage.

      You’re welcome :-)

Yes I was surprised they gave him an instruction as basic as that!

        @keithcollantine: You’re welcome :-)

        This is funny! ;)

      2. I think it is a reminder for how to defend from Hamilton at that stage. Giving up a bit of entry speed where he will back up the following car up as well to ensure a good exit.

    2. If they are both managing then it is still equal, may the best man win. You have to be fast in all situations

thanks for providing these – always great to get them. cheers

  6. “I mean, where’s our pace gone? I compare to Checo, also visually he’s got a much more calm rear end, much more stable. ”

It seems Pérez is much better at delivering the power smoothly than Hulkenberg, that would explain why Nico has been completely outclassed at circuits like Bahrain, Canada and now Austria, where traction is everything.
But I expect him to be ahead again in Silverstone where the layout is more conventional.

    1. @mantresx It’s interesting to me that Perez has been at his most competitive at circuits with similar characteristics – Bahrain, Canada and Austria – whereas Hulkenberg been fairly consistent.

      1. By that context, any idea which other circuits in the calender have similiar characteristics like Bahrain?

      2. @keithcollantine @mantresx Also, his four podiums have been at Bahrain, Monza, Montreal and a wet Sepang. Good spot!

  7. Rosberg doing the Kimi “Leave me alone! “.

  8. So tell me again how good the tyres are and how they aren’t stopping the drivers from racing ! Ok, now go back and read the radio transcripts again.

  9. Where can I listen to all the radio messages of the teams? Is there any site or any app I can download?

  10. Thank you for this section Keith.
It is always a must read!
Gives an nice input on the teams characters and relationships.
