Nico Rosberg, Mercedes, Hungaroring, 2014Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap of the Hungarian Grand Prix as he reeled in the leaders at the end of the race.

Rosberg was over two seconds per lap faster than the cars ahead of him in the final laps as he ran on a fresher set of soft tyres.

Lewis Hamilton ran a conservative final stint on the medium tyres so his best lap time, set just after half-distance, was 1.6 seconds slower than Rosberg’s.

As no driver had to use both types of slick tyre during the race (because they all started on intermediates), it’s interesting to speculate whether Hamilton would have finished higher than third had he done two stints on softs instead of one on mediums at the end of the race. He had better track position than Rosberg when he made his final pit stop and due to his problem in qualifying had plenty of soft tyres.

It’s possible to say in retrospect there might have been a chance for him to take what would have been a remarkable win having started in the pit lane. But under the circumstances he must be pleased merely to have taken a few points off his team mate.

  1. Looking at Hamiltons lap times compared to Alonso before and after he switched to Mediums shows what a poor decision it was to go on that tyre!

    1. Completely agree, Ham came out 3 seconds ahead of Nico and pitted later, they both had slow stops so just shows Ham’s pace to get 3 ahead of Ros. Also Merc should have just stopped once more for Softs, should have done a 27-28 lap stint on softs. On a track that was wet before a soft is always going to be more grippy. Look at Ham’s pace on softs he would have breezed past Alonso.

      1. Do you think that Lewis would have been able to overtake Alonso on merit if both were on mediums?

        1. Yes, but no doubt you disagree @kingshark ! We both support our drivers!

  2. Too add to that LH fastest lap was on old softs on lap 36 just proves how silly primes were if he can not beat that time for the rest of race, he had new sets aswell.

  3. Mercedes are like red bull of the past four years.Incredibly fast in clean air but struggle massively when they are behind someone.

  4. Vettel’s lap times after the second stop.

Almost completely flat. Very impressive. Just like Alonso’s.

  5. * We knew that the two tyres lasted about the same time but one was over a second faster a lap from FP.
    * Hamilton had loads of soft tyres available due to his engine fire in qualifying.
    * Rosberg had already pitted for options, and Hamilton was coming out ahead of him with fresher tyres.

So honestly, why did they put Hamilton on primes? Was it some sort of payback for not obeying the team!!? (half-serious suggestion here).

    1. Ham was on primes when the order came mate

      1. Yep, you’re right. Still, I still can’t work out why he was put on the prime when all logic seemed to suggest option was the way to go.

    2. 7 hours after the decision, I still haven’t managed to comprehend a single reason for the decision!

  6. Any chance this data could be linked to a csv, excel etc? Not to say I don’t love the table above, just be nice to view it in other ways etc.

  7. According to this interview (http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2014/8/16227.html), Hamilton suffered a loss of engine power after his second pit stop on lap 40, losing him around 0.5 seconds per lap for the rest of the race (lap 40 to lap 70, so roughly 15 second loss total, likely costing him the win). This explains why lap 36 was his fastest lap, why he got stuck behind Alonso, and why Ricciardo was able to set up his overtake by getting alongside him on the short straight heading to turn 2.
