2014 Brazilian Grand Prix lap charts

Nico Hulkenberg came within two-tenths of beating Kimi Raikkonen to seventh place in the Brazilian Grand Prix as both drivers pursued alternative pit stop strategies.

Hulkenberg was one of few drivers to start the race on the medium tyres. He finally switched to the softs at his third and final pit stop, and after passing Kevin Magnussen he quickly gained on the Ferraris in front.

To the surprise of the Force India team, Fernando Alonso spent several laps trying to overtake Raikkonen, which slowed both Ferraris down. By the time Alonso got past Hulkenberg was less than six seconds behind.

Hulkenberg’s contrary strategy gave him the advantage of running in clean air much of the time – even leading for five laps early on. “With a three-stop race you are always pushing, but my race was not too complicated and I was on my own for a large part of the afternoon,” he said.

“The team made the right calls on the strategy and we maximised our performance with the tyres in these very hot conditions. I finished just behind the two Ferraris and maybe with one or two more laps I could have finished sixth instead of eighth, but that’s racing.”

Raikkonen, however, might have been able to finish ahead of Alonso had he not lost around four seconds during his slow second pit stop.

The only thing I don’t fully understand from this race is how Gutierrez suddenly dropped away. He was on course for some good points, but at the end of his first stint on the mediums he destroyed his tyres and fell back a long way. Such a shame for Sauber, just one more chance to score points..

  Well, the Sauber is a dog. That’s what happened to him.
  To be honest, I was surprised that he passed Räikkönen at the start and stayed in front for a while.

It’s such a pity that Hulkenberg did not beat Raikkonen. I do not wish Raikkonen any harm, but that Marco guy at Ferrari should have been taught a lesson.
It is not that team orders are the way to go, but allowing Raikkonen to hold up Alonso (different strategies) was plain stupid. It stopped Alonso’s chance of beating Vettel; who he was reeling in (just for the fun of it check the above race chart comparing Alonso and Vettel). And further it put Raikkonen unnecessarily at risk against Hulkenberg.
Thus Ferrari is not just average at building engines and cars, they also forgot how to manage race strategy.

  Alonso himself said that he was not going to catch Vettel and pass him. Here is what he said to Autosport: “Even if I could have overtaken Kimi a little quicker I had to save a lot of fuel in the last couple of laps so a battle with Sebastian was never a possibility.”
  There was no point in using team orders. Ferrari knew they were going to be P6 and P7, they didn’t care which car finished ahead.

  Neah, it was a good move from Ferrari to let their drivers fight each other on-track. It’s not something we’ve seen many times since Schumacher came to Ferrari. Vettel was like 5-6 seconds ahead of RAI when ALO caught RAI and 5-6 laps ’til the end of the race too. ALO was insignificantly faster than VET when he was behind RAI, then after passing RAI, he did not manage to close the gap to VET and/or distance RAI. So, even w/o a fight with RAI for position, I hardly believe ALO would have even caught VET ’til the end of the race, passing him seemed impossible. Ferrari simply did not have the pace. At the moment, to me, they look worse than at the start of the season. RBR seems to be a faster car, McLaren seems slightly better too, so now they’re like 5-6th fastest car on the grid. At the start of the season Ferrari was 3-4th fastest car.
