A special message for Lewis Hamilton was displayed on his steering wheel after he became the 2014 world champion.

Toto Wolff was ready to start the championship party after the race, while Lotus mechanics shared a joke after one of their cars on fire.

Here’s the Twitter story of the title-deciding season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Build-up

Two British drivers took titles in GP2 and GP3 this year. It was Lewis Hamilton’s turn to take the championship in Formula 1.

Hamilton’s family came to Abu Dhabi on Sunday morning.

An emotional day for Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel as they made their final starts for Ferrari and Red Bull respectively.

Race

Halfway through the race, it looked like Nico Rosberg’s only hope of winning the championship was a reliability issue on one of the Mercedes cars – unfortunately for him, it happened on his one.

Pits, paddock and celebrations

Williams ended 2014 with their first double podium of the year.

An explanation of the laughter in the Lotus garage after Pastor Maldonado’s car caught fire.

  1. Apropos of nothing, who led the most laps in 2014? I know Nico was ahead going into Abu Dhabi but not sure now. Thanks if anyone has the answer.

    1. I can’t tell you the exact figures but I know Lewis leads the tally by 12 or 13 laps.

  2. Wonder if he had a look at Driver Default 6 as well for a laugh…

  3. Regarding the @GirtsF1 Tweet, I was in the 39%! Here’s what I wrote back in 2012 explaining why I voted “yes”:

My gut feeling was “no”, but after thinking about it further, there’s no reason why he couldn’t. I think 2013 is going to be a huge test of his patience as Mercedes still won’t be at the front, but after that, it’s impossible to predict what will happen. We’ve seen before that rule changes can shake up the pecking order. It’s also worth remembering that it took Red Bull six years to win their first championship, and that in the first four of those six, very few people saw their meteoric rise coming. Mercedes have only been in the sport in their current guise for three years, and 2014 will be a perfect opportunity for their impressive technical team to steal a march on their rivals.

Of course, saying that it could happen is not the same as predicting that it will happen, which is what this poll is actually asking, but I’ll take a punt and say that it will.

I feel pretty happy with that prediction :)

  4. Does Marussia actually ‘win’ 9th place though? I thought bernie said something that they forfeit their position if they didn’t make it to the grid this race.

    1. I heard something from the Caterham administrator over the weekend coverage that it’s in the regs that a team can miss 3 races without penalty so marussia should keep their pot.

  5. @keithcollantine

‘Champion’ (noun) 1. A person especially in a sport or game that has defeated or surpassed all rivals in a competition. Therefore, who should be champion? The driver who has already guaranteed he will win more than half of this year’s races. #F1 #AbuDhabiGP

The definition refers to a competition as a whole, not who can defeat others most times within a competition, as set out in the rules before the season begins. Thankfully, a medal system was not introduced in F1. The champion is whoever surpasses all rivals’ points.

    1. Thankfully, any way you cut it, Hamilton wins.

      1. That’s true this year but the initial reasoning is not correct.

  6. Let it burn!!!!! Aaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahaha
