As the last of those championships concluded their 2015 seasons last weekend it is now possible to compile a complete list of who had accrued at least one of the 40 superlicence points they need to be eligible to race in F1.
Analysis by F1 Fanatic indicates 316 different drivers representing 43 countries scored one or more superlience points between 2013 and 2015, the period of eligibility for current racers.
Out of these 34 (10.9%) have already reached the 40 points mark. Among those are F1’s newest driver, Jolyon Palmer, who won the GP2 championship in 2014. A further 42 (13.3%) are at least halfway towards the required total.
Drivers can still obtain a superlicence to race in F1 this year if they have previously held one, leaving a door open for those who have not reached the required 40.
And while there are 43 different countries with drivers accumulating superlicence points more than one-third of those – 15 – have only one. They are Cyprus, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Morocco, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Thailand and the UAE. Azerbaijan, F1’s newest destination for 2016, has none.
See below for a full breakdown of how many points each driver scored, and which countries have the most drivers seeking a path to grand prix glory.

Drivers’ superlicence points by country
Select a country to see how many of their drivers have superlicence points:
2016 F1 season
- Which was F1’s best down-to-the-wire title fight?
- Are tickets too dear? Crowds fell at some tracks in 2016
- F1’s TV audience decline stopped in 2016
- Brawn among key F1 hires announced by Liberty
- Has F1 hit ‘peak penalties’? Fewer sanctions in 2016

Such a mammoth list! I was just wondering when something like this would appear :).
@keithcollantine – did you see that in the rules for Spanish F4, on one of the back pages it casually mentioned that the FIA super-licence points now apply over the last 5 years? Talk about a possible irony..

@fastiesty @zantkiller The most recent version of the rules (December 2015) says three years.

@keithcollantine @zantkiller Classic FIA, doing their best Schroedinger’s cat impression. So, Vandoorne, Ocon, Rosenqvist, Rowland, Lynn, Marciello, Giovinazzi, Sirotkin, de Vries, Kirchhoefer in the junior levels. Gasly, Leclerc and Wehrlein miss out, despite being reserve drivers, but could still stand in this year if need be.

Why isn’t Suzie Wolff having an initiative to get an African driver into F1?

The map is a nice addition as well, interesting to see so many drivers from the UK, but also that Brazil is in second place.

Quite a piece of work, well done. But you will forgive me if I question the ‘good taste’ of Justin Wilson being in the list.
AmbroseRPM (@ambroserpm)

I would think because he does still have points on his super licence which are still valid. One of those 50/50 moral calls.
Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine)
14th January 2016, 13:22
@nickwyatt @ambroserpm Better, I thought, to mention him at the foot of the table rather than pretend he never existed.

That to me is a very professional course of action.

Is a dead person able to have a superlicence at all? let alone points? RIP justin.
Craig Woollard (@craig-o)

I think it was still worth putting him on the list. The likes of Dario Franchitti and Allan McNish are no longer racing (due to injury in the case of the former) either yet they still appear.

What about Nelson Piquet Jr? He was FE Champion and that gives Super Licence points…
Craig Woollard (@craig-o)
14th January 2016, 13:28
Formula E does not give points. However the champion is granted a super licence.
AmbroseRPM (@ambroserpm)
14th January 2016, 13:37
That is just silly to me. The cars are far slower than a GP3 car, and they get a super license. Good promotion and accreditation of the series though.

WEC is a great championship with great drivers.
But is feels somewhat biased that 8 drivers in this list qualify for the Superlicense 40points by becoming 1st in the past 3 seasons!
It is even more so biased/skewed as in WEC (also) it depends very much on team you are racing for, rather than purely how good you are (thinking about the poor guys with Toyota/Nissan contracts)
Not sure if/how I would do it differently.

Rio Haryanto is in the race for a seat at Manor, but how can he qualify for a super license when he does not have enough points and his previous super license was more than three years ago (in 2012)?
Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine)
14th January 2016, 17:22
@sasquatsch The superlicence doesn’t have to have been issued within the past three years, it can be earlier, providing the FIA think he’s good enough. See ‘How drivers can qualify for an F1 superlicence’ here:

So much effort all for nothing. Nobody is going to ever care about superlicense points, ever. It’s another FIA hotfix for a supposed problem and will be ignored whenever convenient. Appreciate the thought, but I fear you wasted your time on this, Keith. :)

The fact Max and Carlos jnr haven’t got enough points make a mockery of the system.
Introduce an age limit by all means and a strict test of ability – but this system is pointless……

You are missing Milos Pavlovic, Serbia. He earned super-license back in 2002 and was first ever driver from Eastern Europe with Formula One license.
Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine)
11th February 2016, 10:36
This isn’t a list of every driver with a superlicence it’s a list of every driver with superlicence points, and to the best of my knowledge Pavlovic doesn’t have any.

Are there any women on the list? I can see most of the names are clearly male, but I can’t tell the gender of most of the “non-european” (Japanese etc.) names. If not then there’s little chance of a woman driver breaking into F1 any time soon and maybe that’s were Suzie Wolf should be focusing her efforts?

It’s great to see Gabriele Tarquini in this list. He should take on Gutierrez drive at Haas.
