  1. Hamilton was 1 second ahead of Riccardo before his stop for Ultra Softs, however even with Riccardo’s 13 second stationary pitstop, Riccardo came out only a second or two behind hamilton. Doesn’t this mean Hamilton had a dreadful outlap? like 13 seconds off the pace!!! why wasn’t this mentioned anywhere. I know he missed the corner coming out of swimming pool corner, but still…

      Yeah, I did wonder. I thought he’d probably stopped a lap or two earlier than ideal, then struggled to get the tyres working – meanwhile, Ricciardo was doing a good lap on the inters and got his slicks working straight away. Looked it up on the FIA site:

      Hamilton’s in-lap, including the stop, was a 1:49.843, followed by a 1:41.829 out-lap when he couldn’t get the tyres working – went into the 1:30s after that.

      Ricciardo’s in-lap was 1:56.435… so the delay only cost him around seven seconds to Hamilton… but he got his tyres working straight away and his out-lap was a 1:33.994 (by far the quickest of anyone who switched to slicks around that time – only Perez, Vettel and Alonso did out-laps within 2.5 seconds of that).

    2. Yes Hamilton commented his out lap was like driving on ICE, it took some time for the Merc to get heat into the tyres. The Red Bull was far superior to the Merc in getting heat into the supersofts.

      1. @ju88sy Yeah, both Mercedes cars struggled all race to get its tires up to temperature. Hamilton was slow on every VSC restart but would suddenly pick up the pace a few laps later.

      Isn’t that because the pit lane exit skips a corner. Yes, when he came out, they were side by side, but look at where they were when Riccardo actually joined the track, that was way more than a second, probably more than 3. It was still a bad lap for Ham, but a bad lap entirely consistant with a cold set of tyres that he is struggling to warm in wet conditions.

    4. Sector 3 was still wet when Hamilton pitted for slicks, and the intermediates would have been quicker overall for another couple laps.

      I was at the race and saw Ham come past (just after missing the corner exiting the swimming pool section) with plenty of time to spare in terms of coming out in front of Ricciardo but it took him forever to get round the final 2 corners and onto the pit straight.

      I actually thought he’d crashed at Rascasse because the live footage at the track was just showing an start finish straight for about 8 seconds where they were expecting him to be coming through… Once he did eventually show up on cameras Ricciardo was well out of site near the pit exit and I thought he’d still somehow come out in front despite the long pit stop.

      I think Mercedes had to act because Ham’s X-Wets were really getting old, but I don’t think the track was fully ready for slicks until lap 33. Red Bull also had to react because sectors 1 and 2 were ok for slicks and Hamilton hadn’t reached sector 3 by the time they called Ricciardo in. In hindsight an extra lap on the inters would have guaranteed him a win, even with a slow pit stop.

  2. looking at the graph, it appears Hamilton’s outlap was 11 seconds slower than his following lap.

    1. Yeah, Hamilton must have thought he lost the race there.

  3. You can kind of see on the graph that many drivers set fastest lap at some point in the race. As this sometimes happened more than once on the same race lap, it’s hard to compile a complete list, but I thought it was remarkable how many of the leaders and midfield went purple at some point.

  4. How did Hulk get ahead (with a few meters to go) of Nico? Then both set their fastest times on the last lap (Nico was faster but some margin). Scratching my head on this one. Someone please explain. I would love to know the sector times of lap 74 for both drivers.

    1. On the last lap (lap 78), Hulk – 1:34.875, Rosberg – 1:35.997.
      Hulk was 1.122 secs faster.
      S1 S2 S3
      HUL 23.230 43.013 28.632
      ROS 23.591 43.226 29.180
      So Nico was slower in all 3 sectors and by a massive 0.548 seconds in the last sector
      At the end of lap 77, Hulkenberg was 0.831 secs behind Rosberg. So after 2 sectors, Hulk was still about 0.3 s behind Nico and then made it up in the last sector

    2. Remember that it was raining when Hamilton finished, but Rosberg was almost one lap down. So he had to do another lap on the damp circuit. Exiting the last corner he had no temperature in the tyres and therefore no traction.
