Fernando Alonso admits that he was ‘probably overdriving’ when he spun in the closing stages of qualifying, but was otherwise ‘very happy’ with his performance.
The McLaren driver lost control in turn nine and spun, bringing out the double waved yellow flags that compromised a number of drivers’ laps and briefly brought Nico Rosberg’s pole position into question.
“On my final lap I braked very late into Turn Six, cut the chicane and lost some time there,” explains Alonso. “So I wanted to recover the lost time. I probably overdrove and at Turn Nine I spun.
“It’s a bit frustrating because I think we could have gained a couple of tenths which I lost instead because of my mistake, but anyway P7 for tomorrow is okay, and I’ll be starting on the clean side of the track.”
Having also set the seventh-fastest time in each of the three practice sessions, and with team mate Jenson Button starting alongside in eighth – Alonso is feeling positive about the performance of the team this weekend.
“I am very happy,” says Alonso. “Obviously both McLarens in Q3 – I think for the first time since Brazil in 2014. So definitely a step forward again this weekend. I think it’s looking good so far.”

Good Job by Mclaren today, especially Alonso. Alonso was on fire in the wet, going top at quite a few points as the track changed. Good for them, hope they throw the kitchen sink at the 2017 car so they can compete.

A predator smells blood and attacks hard. P7 is fine but Nando probably saw himself a bit further up the grid. Great performance by him anyway, on the changing weather.
McLaren look properly fast here by their standards. Well done to them!

To be honest it did look a little strange how he didn’t even try correcting the spin when the rear got loose…

Man you really despise Alonso….he might be arrogant at times, but he’s good, very good as a driver.
Or maybe you’ve mistaken him for Pastor? ;-D
