Teams favour super-softs for Monza and Spa

2016 Belgian Grand Prix

Most drivers have favoured the super-soft tyre in their selections for the upcoming Belgian and Italian Grand Prix weekends.

However Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have made more conservative choices for Spa, opting for more sets of the soft tyres. Rosberg, unlike Hamilton, has taken four sets of the medium rubber. In contrast the Ferrari drivers will have just one set each of the hardest tyres in Belgium.

The super-soft tyre is being even more strongly favoured at Monza, particularly among the Haas drivers, who have chosen nine sets of the most aggressive rubber.

  1. Odd choices for some in Spa, I expected mostly softs for everyone, as the track is so long, a supersoft will probably only last 1 fast lap in a qualifying window. I doubt a used supersoft will be faster than a used soft at the end of 3 laps.

But hey, I’m not exactly an expert.

wouldn’t be surprised if the supersofts explode after half an lap

  2. Don’t understand most teams choices for Spa, the only one I can understand is Mercedes and kind of Red Bull, but Ferrari is a very strange choice

    1. I do agree, Ferrari and Sauber choises are very strange. If won’t work the soft tyres well, they will have a lot of problems.

  3. From the Spa choices… it’s a long lap so Merc are confident doing Q1, maybe even Q2, on the softs. Everyone else knows they need extra supersofts.

Ferrari are the only team I’m a little surprised about, only taking one set of mediums. Sauber I can understand taking a risk and going very aggressive, and Haas too (all Ferrari teams… probably not a coincidence), but I’d have expected Ferrari to want a few more options open for the race.
