Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap of the Italian Grand Prix – the first time McLaren have set the quickest lap of a race in over three years.

While this was an encouraging sign of the progress the team have made with the Honda engine at a power circuit, it only came about after a late pit stop for fresh tyres by Alonso. And he finished well outside the points in 14th place.

Jenson Button was the second-quickest car through the speed trap during the race, hitting 358.3kph.

Showing how much the race leaders were able to conserve their performance, Nico Rosberg only set the ninth fastest lap of the race.

  1. Fernando getting the fastest lap and Jenson with second fastest in the speed trap.

You’d think, from that information alone, that the McLaren was a pretty good car!

    1. Fastest qualy times were about 5 seconds faster than the race flap

Not unusual these times. But it talks volumes about the present state of F1

      1. And how superior the Mercedes really is. Their qualifying lap was almost 6 (six!) seconds faster than their fastest in the race. So they just relax and turn down their engine mapping for the race. Put the car in cruise control and still drive them home in yet another 1-2 victory!

        1. yeah you would, but they had to do the other 50 laps at half pace to save enough enough fuel for 1 fast lap!

  2. Good job McPair, they had awesome time joyriding and dicing….

  3. alonso fastest lap was on new tyres, lower fuel

button probably had a tow from a few cars when setting that top speed

  4. and circuit record is still from…2004!
barrichello with 1:20 would make hamilton looks like a 2016 Sauber….
