Risk of rain throughout Brazilian Grand Prix weekend

2016 Brazilian Grand Prix weather

Clashing weather fronts will create a high but unpredictable chance of showers throughout the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend.

Cool air from the south will meet warmer tropical conditions to the north, creating the possibility for rain and even thunderstorms in the three days ahead.

Friday will be the warmest of the three days before the weather takes a turn for the worse, with temperatures almost reaching 30C. The next two days will feel very different, with the air temperature unlikely to reach the twenties.

The first practice session should at least begin with a dry track but a few drops of rain may arrive at the end of it. The chance of a wet second session is considerably higher.

The threat of rain showers will remain a threat throughout Saturday and Sunday. However as previous wet races have shown the local weather system can be volatile. Rain showers develop at short notice with little warning.

How quickly the track is able to dry out could be crucial during the competitive sessions. A combination of cooler temperatures and high humidity may prevent the track from drying quickly.

However the teams lack data on how the resurfaced Interlagos circuit copes with water as there were no wet session during last year’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

For more updates on the track conditions during each session keep an eye on F1 Fanatic Live and the F1 Fanatic Twitter account.

  1. Just how I like my Brazilians… wet!

  2. Great news! Unpredictable weather and lottery outcomes are welcome this weekend.

I have a feeling rosberg’s safe strategy for p2 might backfire on him.

  3. Thats great news! I hope it will be a nice battle between nico and Lewis with noone interferring.

  4. Here’s my hunch. Hamilton to win by 1 point this year. So that’s 1st place in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. Which means Rosberg 4th in Brazil and 2nd in Abu Dhabi.

    1. the part I like about a 1-4 finish in Brazil is the ‘winner takes all’ mentality needed for AbDa.

      1. Yeah, that’s why I want Rosberg to finish 4th in Brazil: it will be all-in in the final race.

    2. Of course it could go the other way, but if this is the prediction, I cannot imagine just how utterly gutted Rosberg would be.

    3. I like hunches!

  5. I for the life of me can’t make out who’s that in the picture. Thank God they outruled this helmet madness!

    1. @mrboerns

It’s Lewis, although I only found out by clicking the picture! (Awesome username by the way).

      1. Comment may or may not have been completely sincere :-)

    2. 2013 Mercedes with the yellow camera mount = Hamilton

    3. If you have a keen eye you can also spot that it is an Arai, which Ham ran until this year when he switched to Bell. Rosberg, to the best of my knowledge, always ran the Schuberth.

  6. What a weekend we have shaping up! It’s safe to assume that Lewis would be happier of the two if the weather is indeed as predicted, with much less to lose and already 3x WDC in the bag. Bad starts aside he knows he’s done as much as he can and he appears mentally prepared for the possibility of Rosberg becoming WDC.

Whilst there is a chance we could see another Monaco-type performance from a tentative Rosberg, a win or at least finishing ahead of Lewis would be the best possible way to silence his critics – those saying a title-win would mainly be down to reliability (myself included).

  7. Another reminder of why this should always be the season finale. A tight track where you can pass, unpredictable weather, absolutely bezerk fans. Better this than some sterile track where the crowd is primarily bankers staring into their blackberries.

    1. I think you mean Iphones or combustible samsungs lol.

  8. I hope that it actually does rain, and not a false alarm. Something like the 2007 European Grand Prix would be great, but with lighter rain obviously so that there’s no red flag.

  9. UBIMET, who supply the official weather forecasts for Formula One, have taken the unusual step of issuing an updated weather forecast ahead of Saturday’s running:

The weather conditions for Sunday look rather cool with an enhanced risk for rain during the whole day.

Race day will see overcast and wet conditions. The probability for some rain throughout the day is quite high – light and intermittent in the morning hours, more frequent and possibly moderate in intensity during the afternoon hours due to an approaching weather system. Winds will be light to moderate from the southeast and the temperature will range around 20 C.
