Daniil Kvyat’s race engineer urged him not to lose his cool on the radio at the end of a frustrating Russian Grand Prix.
The Toro Rosso driver was irritated by the timing of his first pit stop, which cost him time because it dropped him in front of the race leaders, forcing him to lose time being lapped.
“Keep it cool,” Kvyat was urged after he took the chequered flag in the same position he started. He later said – in a statement issued by Toro Rosso – that he was “maybe a bit too hard on the team” following the race.
Another driver who struggled to keep his cool in the literal sense was Lewis Hamilton. Overheating in his Mercedes forced him to drop back out of contention – so much so that his team had to keep an eye on the gap to Max Verstappen behind him.
Tellingly, Hamilton was also told his team mate Valtteri Bottas was having to deal with the same problem, but he had the advantage of being able to run in clear air while Hamilton was trailling the Ferraris.

Just a guess but that Max says “clipping so much” makes me think it’s more of a symptom rather than “these clips” being a part of the car. Clipping is typically referred to when analysing an analog signal and an input goes higher than intended such that any input over that point is discarded (it’s very common with audio processing).
For example with braking it could mean that any input from the driver over 90% on the brake pedal is getting clipped and isn’t having any noticeable effect.
I could be totally wrong too though.

This is interesting – here’s Mercedes’ reply to Hamilton’s question when he asked if both cars are overheating?
Affirm both care are struggling. Valtteri has the advantage of being in free air.
Yet there’s no corresponding communication between Mercedes and Bottas about temperatures – I would have expected Bottas to be talking to Mercedes or Mercedes to let him know just as they told Lewis.
It’s just strange that the leading car would have temperature issues and the driver wouldn’t care nor his team.

@mrboerns I thought they just censor it – are you saying this transcript is just a small part of the entire transcript and it’s up to whoever-is-in-charge to decide what to let the public know?
If that’s the case I honestly didn’t know that but it’s pretty important to know that. Do we know what percentage of the communications the public receives (10% vs 90%)?

@freelittlebirds I mean no offence but I’m surprised you’re just learning this now. I thought I had pointed out on several occasions that just because we heard as often as we did Nico seemingly asking for ‘help’ as to how to match LH, and little from LH in that regard, doesn’t mean that was actually what was happening. F1 manipulates what we get to hear in order to create drama and storyline. Nico was portrayed around here as needing LH’s data, but LH not needing his, as a result. As you recall they actually stopped much of what teams could say to drivers temporarily, only to reverse that again, and it was all F1’s own doing. They got fans riled up into thinking drivers (or mysteriously particularly one driver…Nico) were being too spoon fed. All they had to do was choose differently what we get to hear, but for their desire to create storyline and column space.
More recently, notice they love to let us hear FA rant about his car in the heat of the moment, and that to many translates into him being a whiner and a handful etc etc. Yet we know away from the heat of the moment FA is actually diplomatic. Or SV’s complaints every time a blue flagger doesn’t immediately leap out of his way. Those we usually get to hear.

@freelittlebirds, no, this transcript is still only a fraction of the total radio traffic which goes back and forth between the drivers and the pit wall. There are some broadcasters who have an increased level of access to the pit radios and can broadcast more of what is said, but even so they only provide a fraction of the total traffic.
It seems unlikely that, for example, there was no traffic at all between Sauber’s pit wall and Wehrlein, for example, or that Renault said nothing to Hulkenberg until after the race – at the very least, you would expect them to have called them in for pit stops or when other cars were coming up to lap them. I therefore think it is quite plausible that the team might have said something to Bottas, but it simply was not broadcast to the public.

Two possible reasons for that:
1. FOM just didn’t broadcast the messages to Bottas because they didn’t deem them interesting enough (although unlikely given that he was leading the race.
2. Bottas wasn’t actually struggling with overheating, at least not to the same extent, but Mercedes told Hamilton that he was in order to try and get him to slow down a bit more.
It isn’t the first time that Mercedes have stated that both cars have had the same issues when there has been no evidence for it, so I suspect it was a little white lie. Hamilton’s car did seem to be overheating far more than it should have been and no doubt they wanted to slow him down as much as was reasonably possible without losing 4th place.

FOM may also publish certain broadcasts and leave other things out to create (what they deem as) more entertainment.
[This is speculation from me]. It would be nice to get a full transcript per driver (as I have mentioned before); although it might prove rather boring.
Your 10% stat is probably generous – I would expect race engineers to be chatting to driver almost non-stop.

I’m not suggesting any conspiracy against Mercedes, I just think the message about Bottas suffering with the same issues was more about getting Hamilton to abide by the instructions they were giving and to stop him over analyzing it and have it affect his driving. He’d been ragged all weekend as it was.

But surely if he’s having the same issues as Lewis they’d need to communicate that to him. How else would he have known?
Also, In one of the transmission Lewis can be heard saying the temps are going back up, which was at a point when he started to push to close the 4s gap on Kimi. So the issue can’t have just been due to him being stuck behind Kimi.

It seems the drivers can see it on their dash, if/when they want. The commentator on my TV channel said a little time after Hamilton was told to cool / not overheat his car that he made his dash show the temp(‘s) of the car.

The thing about the transmissions (from what I recall) is that they are now all “in the clear”, so other teams can listen in on what other teams are saying, as well as FOM. I suspect that also applies to all the TV/Radio people as well. Therefore, I reckon FOM could get a full transcipt of the entire race out, if they could be bothered.

FOM would need one person per team radio if they wanted to monitor all broadcasts live. Then relevant transmissions need to be forwarded to a producer to ‘send out’. They don’t have that. Many radio transmissions are simultaneous so talk to Bottas could have happened while the nominated person (radio comms) was listening to other radio traffic so it was missed completely and resides as a recording somewhere. Drivers ‘so called’ talking to Charlie to make a point, can only happen if Charlie is switched to that drivers frequency. If Charlie is scanning he will lock onto the first transmission to ópen’ his radio but he will not hear other transmissions initiated during that time.
