Fernando Alonso’s late pit stop allowed him to lap within three tenths of a second of the three quickest teams.
Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap of the Spanish Grand Prix in his Mercedes. Both Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari and Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull get within a tenth of a second of his time.
But Alonso, who had been delayed by first-lap contact with Felipe Massa, used his fresh tyres at the end of the race to set the fourth-quickest lap. Having qualified seventh for the race, it served as an indication the McLaren is potentially quick but is lacking development and reliability.

That’s a huge boost in the teams morale. We’re waiting for Honda again, but what if they hit that sweetspot and start eking more out of that engine without much problem? the season could turn upside down for them.

He pit very late for softs (13 laps from the end) and came out to do this lap. A boost alright but considering the position he qualified and where he finished, it is not looking so good. But hey, they finished.
Honda have the potential to run an entire race, if they sort the vibrations issue. That will itself help them run higher power which surely should help.

Pole win and fastest lap. What do you call that? He didn’t lead every lap so not grand chelem.

One thing to bear in mind is that the track had rubbered in considerably near the end of the race, which helped with Alonso’s fast lap time. Still, it’s a liver of a liver lining for McLaren Honda…

Hamilton set his fastest lap on the same lap as Alonso. It was the new tyres more than the track being rubbered in
