Sebastian Vettel set a new lap record during the Belgian Grand Prix, taking over six-tenths of a second off the benchmark he set eight years ago.
The record initially fell to Lewis Hamilton on lap 35 following the restart, as he tried to break free from Vettel. He succeeded, despite Vettel bettering Hamilton’s time by just 0.026 seconds with three laps to go.
Daniel Ricciardo was the only other driver who lapped within a second of Vettel’s new record.

The obvious retort is that LH was more interested in winning than setting records, but it still begs the question “with a car that fast why couldn’t SV get his nose alongside LH at any time during the race?” In the following MotoGP riders swapped places back and forth, but of course they don’t have the luxury of fitting new tyres mid-race, nor do their bikes suffer catastrophic loss of grip when behind another bike, they just have to make the best of what they start with and try to finish ahead of the bike in front of them.

They do however start with different tyres that will give them edges over different parts of the race.

The second time so far that an official lap record set during the refuelling era has officially been beaten (the other race being the Austrian GP). This means that the official lap record of the Yas Marina Circuit should be under threat as well as it’s from 2009 as well.
