Conditions deteriorated further on Saturday. The weather was foul during qualifying: Romain Grosjean crashed and and a two-hour delay followed.

Lance Stroll emerged as one of the surprise stars of qualifying by putting his car on the front row of the grid.

However Lewis Hamilton made history by surpassing Michael Schumacher’s record of 68 pole positions.

Hamilton led the charge to turn while while Esteban Ocon edged Stroll out of second place.

Max Verstappen was one of several drivers to receive a grid penalty, and his race was ruined when contact with Felipe Massa caused a puncture.

Not what most of the crowd came to see. For the third time in four years Mercedes finished first and second at Monza.

Monza produced the usual incredible podium scenes.
