Max Verstappen officially made up 12 positions during the United States Grand Prix, though the lap chart tells a slightly different story.

The Red Bull driver took the chequered flag 13 places higher than he started following his last-lap pass on Kimi Raikkonen. But a controversial penalty dropped him back off the podium.

The split between one and two-stop strategies meant we saw more late-race exchanges of position than usual. Sebastian Vettel recovered second by passing Valtteri Bottas, after which team mate Kimi Raikkonen let him through.

Further back Lance Stroll took Stoffel Vandoorne on the last lap and even newcomer Brendon Hartley made up a place, overtaking Marcus Ericsson’s Sauber.

  1. Interestingly Raikkonen was already more than 4sec behind Verstappen at the finish line.

What would Connelly/Salo have done if it was over 5secs?

    1. Haha, we will never find out I guess :)

I don’t understand why Kimi and Bottas’ pace drops so much compared to Lewis after kimi’s overtake is complete. Any particular reason?

      1. In the Finnish interview Kimi said that he had to do lots of fuel saving during the last laps. His tires were ok.

  2. Too bad Max didn’t start in row 2 or 3, it seems like he had quite the pace to challenge Hamilton there.

  3. The chart makes it crystal -clear what everybody knows already. There is a huge gap between the three top teams and the rest
