The pre-race drivers introduction, featuring star announcer Michael Buffer, was over-the-top and somewhat over-long. But putting front row occupants and world championship rivals Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton together was a smart touch.

The grand prix didn’t disappoint once it got going. Vettel pulled off a surprise by beating Hamilton to turn one, though he couldn’t contain his rival.
Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo used his trademark ultra-late braking as he tried to pass Valtteri Bottas.

When that didn’t work he made an early pit stop in a bid to undercut the Mercedes driver, but was sidelined by a power unit failure before he had a chance to get stuck in.

On his return to America Fernando Alonso used his helmet design from the Indianapolis 500. Unfortunately his race ended the same way, with a Honda engine failure.
Lewis Hamilton
They may as well rename it the Circuit of the Hamericas: Hamilton’s now won five of the six grands prix held at the Texan track.
Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen took third ‘on the road’ but didn’t get to keep it after a controversial penalty.
Mercedes
Mercedes celebrated their fourth consecutive constructors’ championship victory.
