Max Verstappen broke the Interlagos lap record during today’s Brazilian Grand Prix, but the Red Bull driver couldn’t run consistently at that pace.

Verstappen’s time of 1’11.044 beat Juan Pablo Montoya’s 2004 lap record by four-tenths of a second. He set the lap after making a second pit stop for another set of super-soft tyres.

However Verstappen couldn’t sustain that pace on his used set of super-softs. On the next lap his time rose by 1.4 seconds, making him slower than Lewis Hamilton who was on much older rubber. He set the race’s second-fastest lap.

The third-fastest lap of the race went to Lance Stroll, who had to make a late pit stop due to a front-left tyre failure.

  1. The 2nd time this year that the fastest 2004 race lap has been beaten in race conditions, ie., an official lap record from that season has officially been beaten.

  2. The fact that the Renault drivers’ best laps rank so low in this list shows how much off the pace the French team was in the race, especially in comparison to their closest competitors in the championship. The plan to improve reliability affected the car’s performance quite a lot…but at least they scored a point.

    1. Renault confirmed they were running with less power than usual trying to avoid another retirement. I hope they will fix this problems for the next year
