Two-thirds of the 18 finishers in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix took the chequered flag in the same position they started or one place higher.

That’s how hard it was to make up places in this race at this track. Lewis Hamilton, who started and finished second, made that point clear after he got out of his car.

It was processional from the word go. Incredibly, the top 12 drivers on the grid finished lap one in the same order they started, though this was partly because Nico Hulkenberg cut a corner to re-pass Sergio Perez. He later received a penalty for that, though it wasn’t sufficient to restore Perez to the position he had lost.

The only driver who finished the race in a lower position than he started was Lance Stroll. The Williams driver had a bizarre race, pitting twice more than any other driver.

Over his final stint he was catching a six-strong train of cars headed by Stoffel Vandoorne. The McLaren driver had a problem with his car, yet despite his lack of pace no one was able to overtake him.

  1. Well… that says it all about this race and this track really

  2. Wow.
    – No positions changed in the top 12 for the first 14 laps.
    – No positions changed in the entire field for the last 20 laps.

I don’t necessarily ask for overtakes for a good race, but this was a borefest for the most part. Got to hand it to Grosjean and Stroll for enlivening the proceedings briefly.

I wondered why we didn’t get much of Seb on TV, now I know why – he drove an uncontested third from lights to flag – even his pitstop didn’t drop him. I’m amazed he didn’t fall asleep at the wheel.

    1. He joked to the C4 reporter that he wanted some music to listen to as he was getting bored.
