Kimi Raikkonen was quickest on the first day of the post-season test at the Yas Marina circuit for Ferrari.

However Williams attracted the most attention as they gave Robert Kubica his first official test in their car. The 32-year-old is vying for a return to F1 with the team next year.

Kubica covered 100 laps of the track before handing over to the team’s regular driver, Lance Stroll, as planned. He will return to the cockpit late tomorrow afternoon while Sergey Sirotkin will do the majority of the day’s driving.

McLaren was the only team to have two cars in action. Fernando Alonso ran one car while Oliver Turvey did tyre testing for Pirelli in the other, making up for the session they lost when their planned test in Brazil was cancelled. Alonso lost almost two hours of running after he hit a barrier at turn 18.

  1. Can we know the tyre compounds used by the drivers for their best laps?

    1. They are testing the 2018’s tyres, even though we might see the colour on those, I don’t think it will mean much

    2. @hanswesterbeek @jureo Autosport said they were on different programs.

      1. @montreal95 Wrong place. Wish there was an option of deleting/editing

    3. All used hyper-soft apart from Kubica who was on softs.

Well over 1.5 sec difference between Kubica and Stroll. I really hope that Stroll was working on his qualifying performance while Kubica was focusing on long-run fitness.

The problem with Kubica is that everybody wants him to be at least as fast as he was before his accident. So badly.

For comfort (?): A 1’41.296 would have been the 3rd fastest lap of the 2017 Abu Dhabi GP. (But that was on different tyres, a presume.)

        (I presume.)

      2. I read on another website, that his fastest lap was set on a set of “soft” tires.

    2. But 1.5 s behind Stroll looks super bad. Probably he did a race simulation? I wish I saw the report Lowe will get in the evening.

I believe Robert was doing heavy fuel runs to acclimatise the car. He will be doing performance runs tomorrow. I would also suspect the reason they sent Lance out for that lap time is so they have a benchmark to compare Robert against tomorrow.

          Thanks, makes sense.

        2. Gee… Stroll as a benchmark..

There is a Dutch saying, which goes something like: “hunger makes raw beans taste sweetly”. Just saying.

          2. Well.. you can’t ask for a better driver on the grid to be setting the benchmark.

      2. @jureo “Robert Kubica rolls with the full fuel tank to get used to the FW40, confirms Paddy Lowe to the journalist Darshan Choklani. It’s about getting confidence in the car.”

    3. Everybody except Pappa Stroll!

      1. And me.. sympathetic man and story but for me no need to be in F1 at all..

  3. @rdotquestionmark

Cheers for that insight. That would make a lot of sense – they’re testing his resilience first and then his pace, it all sounds rational.

    1. Exactly as it is!

      👍

  4. #Kimi7 and @ScuderiaFerrari confirmed as the fastest (1:37.768) with new Pink #Hypersoft. All drivers today except Robert Kubica set their best time with Hypersoft tyres! (2/3)

  5. What engine McLarens were using?

    1. Honda. You can just switch an engine, major changes are required to the chassis, gearbox etc.

      1. you can’t*

        1. They did it in 2014, they used Honda PU but only managed one installation lap or two

          1. To be perfectly fair they put in a Honda engine in 2015 and only managed a lap or two on the 1st couple of days

  6. Kubica to get used to the track and to the car … Tomorrow Sirotkin … Compare …

  7. How come Mc’Laren are still running with the Honda in this test now that they’ve parted ways ?? Thought this would have been them bolt the Renault power unit in the back for first time. (Same applies to Toro Rosso and Renault).

    1. It takes a bit more time than an overnight to do that, fella

  8. My educated guess is that they went on with the same setup of the weekend for Kubica in order to evaluate his own performance, and instead applied the new testing setup to Stroll only to the evaluate the car and/or tires

  9. Mercedes has built a bulletproof engine and power unit.

  10. This Raikkonen guy… soooo fast! Too bad the season ended already…

  11. Green tail light = No superlicense
    Red tail light = Superlicense

…Guess who drove out of the Box with a RED tail light
