In the round-up: Daniel Ricciardo thinks Christian Horner will have stern words for both Red Bull drivers tomorrow.
What they say
Daniel Ricciardo is expecting a little pre-race talking to by Red Bull team principal Christian Horner…
I expect Christian to definitely have a word with us tomorrow, before the race. And I think for the next few races until things probably calm down and he sees proof that things have calmed, he’ll definitely talk to us.

That hurt a little.. A big crash in FP3 meant I had to watch quali from the pit wall..
Other than a little bruising I’m all ok and fit to race. The boys and girls have worked hard and the car is also fit for the race. Full focus on moving forward and sights set on the top 10 👍 pic.twitter.com/mtb7qxVD3K— Brendon Hartley (@BrendonHartley) May 12, 2018

After some early teething troubles on F1’s new live streaming platform, @spoutnik offers an interesting perspective on rolling out an online service such as this.
It can take time to tune such kind of service. The complexity of such hardware and software behind, either frontend or backend makes it fragile in the beginning. It is possible to stress-test it to a certain extent but it will never be the same as a massive user connection wave. It will happen again until all weak nodes will have been reinforced.
Also, often on the frontend part it lacks retro-compatibility with older and less powerful devices. It also can be simply too resource-intensive and the livestream can stutter or shift progressively. Better have a decent device.
On a side note, sending crash reports or feedback usually is of much help for the developers.

It’s not what Horner says before the race that worries me, or interests me, it will be what he says after the race if there’s more wheel banging etc from either one of them.
I’m expecting at least 1 casualty from the top 6 in the first lap, given that they’re all in very similar paced cars and there’s at least one that will be divebombing the first few corners.

They should apologise for not allowing PayPal payment for F1 TV, but I digress.
nase
13th May 2018, 5:24
@klon
They should apologise for offering credit cards as the sole payment method. It makes sense from a US perspective, where everyone has and uses one (or so I’m told). But here, in the Old World? Not so much.
I only use a debit card, as do most of my countrymen. Well, good luck with that. I had to ask around and use someone else’s. Guess they’ll cash in my refund as well …
And I wouldn’t be surprised to hear from disappointed French fans who wanted to pay for the subscription with a chèque …
And of course the netizens, who prefer entirely digital transactions …
I can get behind the reasons for the technical issues. But offering a single payment method, in 2018, and a payment option that betrays the cultural background of the provider? That’s just careless.

+1 both of you! I do not have a credit card at all (it is really not so common here in Czechia), only debit. Or paypal. But no, they want only credit… So be it. Still using pirate streams.

Quite strange FOM did not contact one of the several PSPs that offer tailor made payment methods in large parts of the world. Apparently fan engagement is only important as a marketing tool and not in offering practical solutions.

Been barely watching F1 for over a decade, but those cars look cool! I was in time to see the driver of the red car keep it out of the barriers twice (the race that Paddins Downling won). It might have been Sinopoli in a Maserati, not sure.
Any idea why FOM haven’t been able to negotiate with Goodwood/GRRC to get this aligned with the Monaco GP? I’d see that as a mutually beneficial arrangement for both of them.

If I was the best over-taker in F1 & my boss came up with “Furious with both of them” when the teenage culprit needs to be dunked in a huge can of whoop-ass. Personal Management would be instructed to make enquiries.
Mad-Max, Do it to the opposition: Ferrari, Mercs, Force India, McLaren, Renault, HAAS, basically anything painted a different colour to your car. If you are not faster than a car painted in the same colour, follow & learn. Take the next opportunity. Look back on history, It was the stubborn crash rather than be passed shiite that stopped jos verstappen from becoming a great driver. He taught you speed, now learn nowse for yourself.

As someone qouted earlier: “So Max was a little naughty with his feign, but DR was impatient and should never have assumed a lane was just going to open up for him.”.. If Max was being impatient in China, then you could state that wrt RIC in Baku
krxx
13th May 2018, 14:13
This is how MVER-FBoys operate. Just make stuff up. RIC was doing the ‘feigning’, not VER. And making totally flawed analogies. VER defended in a way that’s been deemed illegal; nothing to do with CHI.
Philip (@philipgb)
13th May 2018, 11:13
I think you mean in a rear end collision, the majority of the time the car behind is to blame. There are exceptions though.
Ricciardo dummied Verstappen into moving right to defend, then pointed his car to a part of the track that should have been empty given the rules about weaving in the braking zone. When Verstappen made his second move though this removed all the downforce Ricciardo should have had for his braking, there was nothing he could do to slow his car down enough once committed to the move.
It was a huge gamble by Ricciardo and it was a dangerous move by Verstappen, hence the stewards and team dividing the blame between them.
JohnH (@johnrkh)
13th May 2018, 11:48
Exactly….a lack of respect on Verstappens part towards not only a faster driver but his team mate.
I watched as it happened and then multiple times from all available angles.Verstappen sacrificed not just his WDC points but Ricciardos and RBs due to stubbornness.
Martijn (@)

Can someone please show me the article stating that it is illegal to do that.
Will Jones
13th May 2018, 13:39
20.3 More than one change of direction to defend a position is not permitted. Any driver moving back towards the racing line, having earlier defended his position off-line, should leave at least one car width between his own car and the edge of the track on the approach to the corner.
Will Jones
13th May 2018, 13:48
Also:
A driver trying to fend off an overtaking move from an opponent must rely on his ability to pick the correct braking points and cornering lines. A skilful driver can also hold off an opponent by adopting a defensive yet legal driving style. Typically this means reducing the angle available for the car behind to use going into corners where there is a substantial risk of being passed. Providing that the driver ahead only changes his line once going into a corner (not deliberately attempting to block the car behind) this is a perfectly justifiable form of racing, and with it a driver in an inferior car can successfully hold off a faster rival.

RIC should have known better indeed. And there still was a cars widht room on the left side. But by his lost downforce he was unable to choose that direction.
JohnH (@johnrkh)
13th May 2018, 13:05
I suppose you may be correct in the fact that Ricciardo should have shown more caution. Verstappens record so far has shown he is a bit of a loose cannon on the track and can’t be trusted to conduct close racing without taking out the other driver.
I do look forward to the day when he does achieve the ability to race wheel to wheel with the best and not just try to barge his away around.
krxx
13th May 2018, 14:20
Maybe that’s true. RIC should have known better that MVER wouldn’t be able to cope with a loss and would defend using foul play.
JohnH (@johnrkh)

So far as I have seen this year the other (top) drivers have had a pretty clean record, Verstappen is 4 for 4 in race incidents.
Robbie (@robbie)
13th May 2018, 13:34
Bottom line for me is that the FIA didn’t deem anything Max did as penalty worthy, and he himself has accepted his need to pick and choose his battles, or the timing of them, better. I also think there is a natural ‘danger’ in lumping all of Max’s incidents together, and it is easy to forget the split second decisions he has had to make…easy to use hindsight. I envision a hard charging Max who constantly reminds us how they still suffer from lack of hp vs Merc and Ferrari, and how he must have felt in those milliseconds during those incidents, that if he didn’t take a chance then the chance would be gone up the road. Much of his time in F1 has been spent watching the Mercs run off into the sunset.
