Ferrari changes Halo wing mirrors for Monaco

2018 Monaco Grand Prix

Ferrari has kept its Halo-mounted wing mirrors for the Monaco Grand Prix but changed the design (above) following the FIA’s rules clarification.

The original design introduced by the team in the Spanish Grand Prix (below) used a pair of mountings on each mirrors. However the FIA told teams this week any mountings on such mirrors must serve a clear structural purpose.

Following the clarification Ferrari has removed the upper aerodynamic element from its design, leaving the mirrors connected to the Halo via a single mounting each.

The FIA told teams any Halo mirror mountings must “provide a meaningful structural contribution to the mounting system” and that “if you use more than one mounting you may be asked to satisfy us, by way of a physical test, to demonstrate this.” The mountings must also connect “to the lower and/or inboard surface(s) of the mirror housing.”

“Whilst the FIA accepts that teams will legitimately design the mirrors, housings and mountings to minimise any negative aerodynamic effects they may cause, we believe that any aerodynamic benefits should be incidental, or at least minimal,” the FIA added.

  1. I’m curious – if they do want to minimize vibrations, can they use a second mount coming down from the mirror onto the body? i.e. such that the mirror is mounted both above and below (like how they are in trucks).

    1. It was said around Baku when FIA allowed the teams to put mirrors on the HALO that they can’t be mounted both on to the HALO and the chassis itself as it would make it harder to remove HALO if driver needs to be extracted quickly from the car.
Teams are also banned of running any cables through the HALO, so if FOM wants to put TV cameras in Ferrari’s mirrors they would need to mount them back to the chassis.

      1. Perfect, thank you, Cuky!

      2. Not quite, halo mirrors were always legal but yes, of course you cant affix the mirror on both the chassis and halo.

  2. Who cares about grid girls when we have halo wing mirrors this beautiful ;)

    1. Yeah! Todt Thongs with ears! What could be more beautiful? Other than pretty much everything.
