What they say

Perez was asked whether the extra zone, which runs between turns seven and eight, will make it easier for drivers to pass.

I think so. I think it will help. It has become a bit more difficult to follow the cars with these wider tyres, wider cars. I hope the third DRS zone gives a bit more possibility.

Real-time ghost racing? Tristan was at it 25 years ago…

The first time I ever tried to do this was at Monaco circa ’93 with the Microprose Grand Prix game. It was such a thrill to watch the race while playing a race in the game – driving through the tunnel while watching them do it on TV. It really made me feel like I was there.

I was very young and not very good, I think I only completed 10 laps before crashing and giving up even with braking assist on (I used to put a weight on the A key and just do the steering with two fingers, so cute!) But it was always a really cool concept for me to pretend to race in a game against the real life drivers.

As an adult now practically I think it’s all a bit of a silly idea, I’d much rather race in a proper online league against opponents you can actually race against rather than a ghost. But still, if it captures the imagination and attention of even just a few young kids like it did for me – well, that’s mission accomplished in my opinion. It really doesn’t have to be a simulator game at all and I think it’s a wonderful initiative.

  1. Above, in silver gray a reasonbly well designed racing car; in pink, something else.

    1. Yeah but the silver one is a spec racing car and the pink one is the most extreme design possible for a certain budget and a set of very restrictive rules. Sure, it ain’t pretty, but it’s faster.

      1. Completele agree with you Fer.

        There’s no comparison.

      2. @fer-no65, not to mention that the Indycar was deliberately designed to look more like a 1990’s car in order to cash in on the nostalgic memories of the average middle aged to pension age men who makes up a large chunk of Indycar’s ageing fan base (previous surveys have indicated that nearly 40% of their fans are at least 45 years old, probably grew up watching Indycar in the 1990’s and therefore thinks that the sport should revert back to what it was like in the 1990’s).

      3. pink and a second slower than the faster car on the grid.
my point is why spend so much resources to create a force india, a sauber, a toro rosso?
sometimes i fail to grasp what benefit comes from it in terms of competition or road relevancy.
they try to make a faster car and just get something one can find on the top of a cell phone antenna, brids nest included.

    2. I personally think the pink is gorgeous. Racing cars should have bright, stand-out colours, and Force India is exactly that!

      1. i am not talking about the color.

  2. Alonso and his modesty! He’s not completely wrong though. Despite his diva attitude (but so are a few others) he still has it.

    1. The ever arrogant Alonso. I agree with him though…

        1. These are not road relevant the slightest. Force india, Sauber and Toro rosso are racing each other not the top cars.

    2. I guess he’s giving up on trying to boost his stats in f1.

  3. The biggest mistake Fred made in his career was Briatore

  4. Rosberg should buy and run on his own Formula E team. I’ll start following FE if he done that.

    1. Well he could widen his fathers DTM team back to Formulas, where they withdraw after 2005 season. Not to mention Nico won Formula BMW ADAC championship on his dad’s team in year 2002.

  5. I highly doubt it. I don’t think the addition of a third DRS-activation zone is going to make any difference in aiding overtaking into turn eight both due to how short that straight is and what type of corner precedes it. BTW, The 2013 edition of the Canadian GP won by Seb also took place on this day, and it’s the 5th anniversary of that race, so I’m a little surprised that it wasn’t included to the ‘on this day in F1’ section despite your tendency to bring up races and qualifying sessions, etc., from five years back (2013 stuff this year, 2012 last year, 2011 in 2016, and so on).

  6. I can settle for 9.5 in all areas as long as you dont count fairplay into the scoring. Properly thrashing Vandoorne has restored his shine a bit the last year.

  7. If I have to summarize Alonso’s career in 10 words it would be these.

Right guy at the right place at the wrong time.

Mclaren had a big turn around and was set to compete for yearly titles. But all bridges were burned since Ron Dennis made it clear they favored Hamilton.

And who could predict that since 2010 a drinks company would beat two of the biggest teams in history for 4 years straight.

It was clear after 2014 nobody could catch Mercedes with the token system unless you would try something completly new. Enter McHonda and the less said the better.

When I think of Alonso after his retirement is that it should have been so much more. Only 32 wins in a nearly 20 year career? Maybe in the 80’s and 90’s those numbers were respectable but today they wouldn’t consider you the greatest.

When it came to politics he was his own worst enemy. Burned all bridges with top teams and it will be a miracle if he can land a top 6 drive this late in his career.
Which sadly he’s still capable off.

  8. Any man who must say “I’m the King” is no true King

    1. @johnmilk This is such a stupid statement.

      1. Tell that to RR Martin @mashiat

        1. @johnmilk How do I get in contact with him?

          1. @mashiat attend the nearest wedding, but be careful

@keithcollantine Any chance you can make use of “spoiler” tags and drop downs when listing results from racing series? It makes me sad that I have to completely ignore this site if I haven’t watched all the races/qualifying for a particular week (specifically Indycar). Sometimes I have to go a full week before I can visit this site, which sucks because I like to come every day!
