Formula 1 world championship rivals Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have made the same tyre selections for next week’s German Grand Prix.
The Mercedes and Ferrari drivers will each take seven sets of the ultra-soft tyres, the softest compound Pirelli has nominated for this weekend, plus four sets of softs and two of the medium compound.Their team mates also have the same tyre selections as each other, with an extra set of softs and one fewer of the medium. The super-soft has not been selected for the race at the Hockenheimring.
The only driver from the leading three teams to have selected more than seven sets of the ultra-soft tyre is Daniel Ricciardo, who will have eight.
Almost all of the midfield teams have been more aggressive with their selections than the ‘big three’. Most have chosen at least eight sets of ultra-softs, Williams have opted for nine and Renault has taken 10.

I am sure this will be like Bahrain again. Mercedes will go for the 1 stop here. Ferrari should do the same as well.

When were these tyre selection made? It seems like a big gamble for the likes of Renault taking so many Ultras when they have acknowledged that they suffer on the softer compounds and bearing in mind the temperatures we have been seeing in Western Europe over the past few weeks.

The yellow tires are commonly used a lot by all teams, it doesn’t look like a good strategy for Sainz to have only one set as he will probably want to run it in the race. They probably know what they are doing much better than I, but I would make sure my drivers have at least 3 yellows.

Renault are already yellow, maybe that does the trick for them.

Until the rules change so they have to use all three tyres in a race, we’ll keep having boring one stoppers interspersed with artificially influenced safety car periods.
