Pierre Gasly will joined Daniel Ricciardo at the back of the grid for the German Grand Prix as the Toro Rosso driver has also changed his power unit.

A complete new Honda power unit has been fitted to Gasly’s car, including his fifth engine, turbocharger and MGU-H, his fourth MGU-K and third energy store and control electronics, all of which exceed his minimum allocation for the season.

Gasly originally qualified 16th for today’s race. His penalty will promote team mate Brendon Hartley to 16th ahead of Lance Stroll and Stoffel Vandoorne. Ricciardo and Gasly will share the back row.

  1. A complete new Honda power unit has been fitted

Good. I’d like to know how Honda new PU slice through midfield.

  2. Unsurprising.

Agreed, and there are still fans, who continue to argue that Mclaren decision to end their partnership with Honda was wrong. Put simply, even with a draggy Mclaren, and the 3rd best power unit on the grid in the Renault, Mclaren are still better off. It makes the Red Bull swapping to the Honda power unit even more baffling. Mind you, Honda could still get it right next year, but that is more in hope than expectation.

      1. As others have noted, to some extent Red Bull don’t really have a huge amount to lose if the relative performance gap between themselves and the midfield remains similar, since they’re far enough ahead that 3rd in the WCC is unlikely to be under threat.

They have basically taken the attitude that, if things stand as they are, they’re probably not going to get any closer to the top two with Renault and have to try and do something different to bridge that gap. It might work out or it might not, but relations between Renault and Red Bull have been strained for some time and it does feel as if things were going to break down sooner or later – whether it is a positive development or not remains to be seen.

At least Honda gets to top one of the standings every year
