  1. Yes he was helped by the rain but so was BOT, for me without a doubt it’s HAM, the pole laps he squeezed in the final moments of Q3 was just amazing, even VET couldn’t beat it.

    1. That’s true, but a good quali is not enough to get you DotW. On race day Ham didn’t have any chance to shine, he just did his job and let his “wingman” deal with the intense action. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it just doesn’t cut it for a DotW. I didn’t vote, but Bottas was definitely more deserving this weekend.

  2. Hamilton was pretty faultless, but had to go Gasly – brilliant job (out qualifying Red Bull as well)

  3. Vettel. Good job also by Hamilton, Raikkonen, Magnussen and rookie Gasly.
    And Ricciardo in the race.

    1. lol good joke.

    2. For me Vettel can’t get it after falling through yesterday – look at Kimi’s pace in that car, and he was way behind, lucky that Red Bull screwed up/were nowhere either so he got fourth.

I gave it to Gasly – luck and good drive in the wet yesterday, good start, solid race, managing the gap to Magnussen expertly (who’s is close behind for me).

Hamilton in the end did the job yesterday, and got the start done today, wasn’t in sight after that (but, we know he can, and he would likely have been behind Bottas had quali been dry, and he’s already got the most votes anyway). I even think kimi was more solid than Vettel (though wonder about whether he let Vettel through at the start or that was Vettel just being sharper).

      1. @bosyber So your logic for not voting for Hamilton is based on something which didn’t happen ? Where does the idea of being behind Bottas if it was dry come from too ?

It just makes the poll completely useless if people base it on events which didn’t even happen.

I’d vote for Gasley, but if his wheel fell off during the race he wouldn’t have finished 6th.. Better give it to Hamilton then.

      2. What pace are you talking about?! RAI had better tyres than VET all race long, started on Ultras yet lost a place, most of his race was in free air, VET set a better personal lap (barely missing the FL of the race) and also spent most of the race behind BOT. Did you see RIC’s pace in an inferior car, although he started 12th and made 2 pit-stops too by comparison? You’re inflating RAI’s performance, he was absolutely nothing special. If it was the case, be sure Ferrari would have made VET no.2 this race and give RAI the chance to take the win. Not happy to say it, but he’s done. Do not know, maybe it’s the car too, but at least since he came back to Ferrari and hybrids were adopted, so almost 6 years, I fail to remember 1 race where he beat without doubt on pace his team mates.

Hahahaha. Why am I not surprised? I’m sure you voted for Vettel as Driver of the Day at the German GP as well

      1. I’ll really be surprised the day he’ll vote for Alonso (after Hades freezes over).
Very hard to vote for Vettel this weekend, should have won the race but didn’t. Poor quali to begin with. Then he should at least have caught Bottas at the start but didn’t, and lost plenty of time behind him. And near the end he risked needlessly his right rear tyre by closing the door on Bottas when an inch of his (VB’s) left front wing was already alongside. Seb was lucky there, it could have been a DNF for him, when he already had the position.

  4. Driver of the day was Ricciardo, but with the qualification in mind, driver of the weekend has to be Hamilton.

  5. for me, it was bottas up until the end. masterful on those really old tires. if seb hadn’t chopped down on him and removed his front wing, he would have probably finished 4th behind kimi. kimi would have been too fast to hold him back. seb is lucky his car wasn’t damaged. seb would have easily cleared bottas on the next turn since he was ahead and had the inside line. pretty reckless and uneeded risk taking by vettel. he needs to start thinking better if he wants to win the championship. he has the faster car. now he needs to start driving smarter.

but in the end, Hamilton was the best of the weekend. he won the race with the great qualifying performance in the wet.

@sidnizer Agreed, Vettel is lucky he ended up with a single point today. It was a reckless divebomb.

  6. DOTW: Hamilton. DOTD: Gasly with honorable mentions to Ricciardo and Magnussen.

    1. Hamilton for the weekend; especially due to his superb Saturday.

Gasly is a very close second for the weekend, and ooh that Honda PU sounds good.

Ricciardo had a superb Sunday. His overtakes were more impressive (track difficult, power difference, DRS impact) than Hamilton’s in Germany. And if consistent many people who voted for Hamilton in Germany should vote for Ricciardo this time ;-)

  7. P I E R R E G A S L Y
Brilliantly mature drive from him. And qualifying was supreme as well.

Gasly, by far? Magnussen a close second.

    1. Sorry for being so picky, @rocketpanda, but you have to choose: Either it was by far or it was close. It can’t be both things at the same time ;)

        @alonshow Schrodinger’s distance? :D *shrug*

        1. @rocketpanda @alonshow If Gasly won by schrodinger’s distance then the fact that I watched the race will have changed the result so there’s no way to know who was the best.. Also, all drivers will have achieved every possible race result at the same time, so they’re all DOW in at least one scenario ;)

          1. @twentyseven: Comment of the year! XDD

  9. Gasly, with a mention for Alonso (pretty good defence from Dan although it couldn’t last for long, a few points, he couldn’t do much more). Surprised by the awful racecraft by Bottas who is never inspired but usually manages to be decent.

    1. There is actually someone voting for Bottas, confusing this poll with Tool of the Day.

  10. Voted Gasly DOTW

Honorable mention to Hamilton for Qualy and to Ricciardo for the race.

  11. Gastly and Magnussen. That Torro Rosso is very competible accelerating from low speeds. Magnussen delivers superp driving almost every race this year. With a little more luck and coolness (Melbourne pit crew fault, Hochenheim rain 15 laps before cheqered flag, his kamikaze teammate etc.) he would now have been 20-30 points ahead of Hulkenberg and Alonso in the B-team competetion.

Everybody here will probably go for HAM or GAS or even RIC. So I will throw caution to the wind and say Vandoorne, just for the surprise factor of finally being competent the season. On that front, honourable mention to Hartley too even though he got thrashed by Gasly

  13. Gasly for me. Perfect 10/10 weekend

Also great were Hamilton, Magnussen and Alonso

Good but could’ve been better: Vettel, Ricciardo, Sainz

Lackluster weekend on the other hand for Force India, Leclerc and the Ferrari pitwall+mechanics. Maybe the Ferrari were too busy mourning Marchionne and failed to honor his legacy in the process…

    1. What was more to be asking from RIC? He started 12th and finished 4th with the 3rd best car, setting the FL of the race. He got DoD award in the end.

His qualy perhaps? It is a poll for DotW(eekend), not DotD(day) or DotR(race).

  14. Gasly for me. Both in qualifying and in the race he punched well above the weight of his car.

      +1

  15. I went Ricciardo simply because he had it stacked against him through no fault of his own. Poor tyre choice by his team on Saturday lead to to his being 12th in the grid on Sunday So he had to fight for every position, physically with Bottas as it turned out. considering all of that 4th was a very good outcome.

Poor tyre choice by his team on Saturday lead to to his being 12th in the grid on Sunday

The poor tyre choice put him “just” in a difficult position for going through to Q2. His 12th position on the grid was due to the yellow flags for the spin and “crash” of STR just in front of him during his first fast lap.

  16. Ugggghhh hard to choose.

Hamilton put in a masterful display in qualifying, showing just how good he is in the wet (People will say the Merc is just good in the wet, but it still takes a great driver to push it) and then just controlled the race perfectly.

Gasly though, qualifying result out of nowhere and kept it up in the race to bring home an excellant result, in what has this year been something of an inconsistant car.

+1. I went Hamilton on the vote – but I think that Gasly was just about there too. Impressive stuff.

  17. Good to see Pierre Gasly getting some love.

  18. Went with ricciardo cause I knew hamilton would win this vote, but both were excellent, ricciardo was out through no fault of his own in q2 (stroll spinning in front of him and then too heavy rain to improve lap times) and struggled through no fault of his own in q1 (soft vs ultrasoft tyres), and then recovered greatly in the race and despite the issues bottas had I didn’t really think he could catch him again after their crash but he did and overtook him!

Hamilton was also excellent, though was likely helped by mercedes’ competitiveness in the wet, cause ok hamilton is great in those conditions, but bottas was faster than both ferraris in both wet sessions in recent races, and red bulls were also not strong, when verstappen should be as good as hamilton, to me the car has something to do with wet performance nowadays, remember also monza 2017, how slow ferraris were.

Gasly and alonso ofc also had good races, and for gasly it’s indeed a win, it’s not like you have the slightest bit of chance vs A teams, and he was the only B driver who didn’t get lapped.

    1. Uhh, surprise, looks like gasly was more voted than hamilton!

  19. My vote for driver of the weekend went to Gasly, he was impressive in the wet qualifying putting the Toro Rosso in sixth and beating both Red Bulls, in the race he also finished sixth, although this time it was a case of being best of the rest after Ricciardo had managed to get past him during his recovery drive through the field.

Hamilton had another good weekend, although from the dry practice it looked like unless he could pull something out of the hat in qualifying he might be starting on the third row of the grid, but once the rain fell in qualifying and when it came time to deliver a quick time in Q3 he produced the goods for another pole.

A good start with Bottas in second meant Hamilton could control the race and ended up taking a comfortable victory.
